After the hot, dry summer we’ve experienced, the return of rain can trigger a sudden flush of new grass. While it may look like a welcome change, this new growth can present challenges for horses and ponies prone to laminitis.

Autumn is recognised as the second-highest risk period for laminitis after spring, making now the perfect time to review grazing management and feeding routines.

Five things to consider:

🌱Monitor grass growth

Following a dry summer, rainfall can lead to a sudden flush of autumn grass.

⏰Consider the timing of grazing

Research indicates that pasture non-structural carbohydrates (NSC) levels can vary throughout the day, with higher levels observed later in the day during summer.

🐴Think about NSC per meal

The amount of NSC provided at each meal may be important for insulin-dysregulated horses and ponies.

🪣Split bucket feeds where appropriate

Dividing the same daily amount into smaller meals can reduce the NSC provided per meal.

🐎Consider targeted nutritional support

Digestive, metabolic and hoof nutritional support may form part of a wider management plan for horses and ponies at risk of laminitis.
