⚽ FULL TIME | HEPWORTH UNITED RESERVES 2–1 SHEFFIELD CITY FC 🟢⚫
A frustrating afternoon yesterday as we came away from Hepworth empty-handed despite a performance that deserved more.
The hosts put us under pressure during the opening 20 minutes, but some excellent defensive work meant they created very little in terms of clear-cut chances. At the other end, we looked dangerous on the break and had several opportunities of our own.
The breakthrough came on 25 minutes in controversial circumstances when Hepworth were awarded an extremely soft penalty. Their captain went to ground very easily with a dive Tom Daley might have been proud of and the resulting spot kick was converted to make it 1-0.
Not long afterwards, Matty Evans raced clean through on goal before being wiped out by a Hepworth defender who got nowhere near the ball. Despite our appeals, no penalty was given, with the referee around 35 yards behind the play.
From there, the remainder of the first half belonged to City as we pushed hard for the equaliser.
We didn't have to wait long after the restart.
A ball played back to our young goalkeeper Len Tuttle was perfectly sent forward into the path of Luke Challand, who absolutely blitzed the defence for pace before producing a brilliant finish from a tight angle into the bottom corner.

For the next half an hour, City were in control and looked the side most likely to find the winner.
However, against the run of play, a rare Hepworth attack resulted in a corner and, after a scramble inside the six-yard box, the hosts managed to force the ball home.

From that point onwards, it was virtually one-way traffic.
Hepworth defended deep inside their own half as we threw everything at them. Their goalkeeper was called into action numerous times, we struck the crossbar and saw another effort cleared off the line as we desperately searched for the equaliser.
Unfortunately, it just wouldn't go in.

Plenty of positives to take despite the result, but ultimately football is about putting the ball in the net and yesterday we just couldn't find that second goal.
