With the dust now settled on the 2026 season, we caught up with Club Captain Ash Roberts to get his thoughts on what has been a very good campaign for Ridgeway in our first season in the Derbyshire County Cricket League.

From the challenges of the season to the performances, the progress made and his thoughts on where the club goes from here, Ash reflects on Ridgeway’s 2026 campaign and looks ahead to what the future could hold.

"Well… what a season!

Our first in the DCCL and what a refreshing change it has been for the boys. Gorgeous grounds, wonderful people and some amazing players that we’ve had the pleasure of coming up against.

Congratulations and commiserations to those who have been promoted and relegated.

There are so many positives to take away from this year. Being the only one-team setup in the league can make selection difficult and without a vast pool of players to choose from week in, week out, it’s been amazing that we haven’t been scratching around or playing with 10. In fact, we’ve had to let people down some weeks, which is always a tough conversation to have.

The biggest positives, though, have come from our performances. We have the best outfield catcher in the league, the best bowling performance, the highest score and players in the top 10 of the league for both batting and bowling. That shows just how much quality we have within this group.

I’m unbelievably proud and thankful to everyone who has played for Ridgeway this year, as well as everyone off the field who helps make the club tick. We made a huge call by not following the crowd and heading off to Derbyshire instead of going to South Yorkshire and we’ve managed it amazingly. Every single person has contributed something to this club and I’m over the moon with how the club has been run this year.

Going into next year, there are some massive lessons to be learned. Having played ‘win or lose’ cricket for the last 15 years, it’s been a difficult adjustment at times. We’ve had teams shutting up shop against us because they knew we had too much and equally, there have been times when we probably should have shut up shop ourselves and didn’t.

I think we’re all proud of where we ended up but also disappointed that we didn’t quite get it over the line. With the lessons learned and players returning from injury, we can have a real crack at it next year.

Finally, a huge thank you to everyone who has supported us this year, whether that’s been coming to watch, sharing, liking and commenting on the socials, playing in the LMS or planning to attend our upcoming Race Night. Your support, investment and belief in the club genuinely helps us continue to grow.

And finally, thank you to everyone who has helped me throughout the season. My first year as captain has been fantastic and after 15 years at this club, I couldn’t be prouder to be captain of the boys."

A long, hard season, but plenty to be proud of from our first year in the Derbyshire County Cricket League.

PLAYER OF THE MATCH

He’s had a brilliant season and for our final game of the campaign he was given the opportunity to open the batting and he certainly delivered.

His 54 at the weekend against Matlock & Cromford Meadows was crucial in helping us set a competitive target, showing once again just how much he’s developed with the bat this season.

Then, yet again with the ball, he picked up two big wickets and was desperately unlucky not to take more. He looked threatening throughout, as he has done all season and gave absolutely everything for the team.

Our final Player of the Match of the 2026 season is the outstanding Keelan McNally.

MATCH RESULT

The curtain came down on a long season for Ridgeway as we secured a tight winning draw over Matlock & Cromford Meadows at the Ridgeway Sports and Social Club.

Losing the toss and being asked to bat, a changed batting line-up looked to flex its muscles and finish the season on a high. A new opening pair meant our ninth different opening partnership of the season, as we looked to shuffle the cards a little.

Keelan McNally opened the batting and was given the opportunity to show he’s not just a demon fast bowler who can bat a bit down the order, he can seriously bat. Keelan struck his second half-century of the season, scoring 54 from 79 balls and yet again showing that, on his day, he is a class above. His season average with the bat stands as:

Martyn Foulds continued his late-season form with a swashbuckling 44 from 59 balls. The opposition may have been telling him he only had one shot. Maybe so? But what a shot it is!

We were bowled out for 172, only the third time this season we had been dismissed without using our allocated overs. We knew we’d have to bowl well and keep things tight, especially after giving Matlock & Cromford Meadows an extra four overs to chase our total.

A very miserly Raja Ali, not for the first time this season, led the attack and was at his accurate best. Yet again, he deserved a wicket for his efforts but unfortunately didn’t get one.

The impeccable Keelan McNally took 2/26, James Bushell chipped in key wickets with 2/21, Gavin Stevens took 1/26 and club captain Ash Roberts finished with 1/50.

With Matlock & Cromford Meadows needing 14 from the final over and three different results still possible, the ball was handed to death-overs specialist Will Cooper.

He held his nerve, successfully defended our target and took a wicket in the over to secure another winning draw in the season finale.

We kept the runs down, stuck at the task and handled the pressure as it piled onto the visitors. Some brilliant ground fielding played its part too in what was a seriously close game, particularly towards the end.

That’s a wrap for the season.

Our first season in the Derbyshire County Cricket League has been incredibly enjoyable to be a part of. After a very poor season in 2025, a fourth-place finish is a fantastic achievement for a tiny club playing on the outskirts of South Sheffield, often coming up against much bigger clubs with a colossal pool of players to choose from.

We can be incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved this season and, most importantly, we’ve shown that Ridgeway are heading in the right direction both on and off the field.

Once the cricket is done, the lads will be sticking around, so expect a few beers to be consumed as we bring the 2026 season to a close.
