Roger Lomas has asked us to share the following with you regarding the sad passing of his wife, Hazel.

‘For those who know us I am sorry to let you know my wife Hazel passed away Wednesday tea time.

She had been deteriorating with her Parkinson’s issues but this was not expected.

I thought she was asleep on a sun bed but she had passed away in her sleep.

We will organize a celebration of and thanksgiving for her life sometime in the future when the current coronavirus problems are behind us.’

The thoughts of Sheffield HC are with Roger and his family at this time

Sheffield Hallam Retain Yorkshire Champions Trophy.

Despite the driving rain, Sheffield Hallam retained their YHA Champions Trophy title last Saturday at Wakefield Hockey Club. A perfect record, with three wins out of three secured a second title in two years, the fifth time they have won the title in the last seven.
Things didn’t get off to the best of starts when the Abbeydale outfit found themselves a goal down to hosts Wakefield. The ball cannoned back off the bar from a penalty corner, only to be turned in as it bounced around the feet of the helpless Hallam defenders. It wasn’t until the second half that Sheffield were able to firstly draw level, before securing all three points with a timely winner. Andrew Jackson, eventually voted player of the tournament, was on hand to score both. Firstly, his thunderous strike through a crowded circle evaded the outstretched leg of the home keeper before neatly slotting home a penalty corner, high into the Wakefield net.
Sheffield University Bankers were next up. After squandering a 3-0 lead the side found themselves leading by a solitary goal. Captain, Martin Sutherland had got the scoring underway before Nick Mobbs added a second from a penalty corner. Ethan Chapman made it 3-0 with a neat lob over the advancing keeper before Bankers pulled one back before the break. Hallam were made to scrap for everything and were wobbling as Bankers added a second. Hallam regrouped and Joe Horne was on hand to finish from close range to make it 4-2.
Sheffield Hallam knew that a draw would be good enough to secure the title as they went in to their final match with Doncaster. Sheffield found Doncaster to be the most difficult opponents on the day whilst also struggling with a new formation they had decided to try out. However, at half time new tactics were deployed and Sheffield took a firm grip on the game with Liam Brown scoring with a reverse stick shot. Hallam could have scored another three as they carved open the Doncaster defence, but opportunities went begging. It wasn’t until the final minute that an Etan Chapman solo goal wrapped things up and secured the title for Sheffield Hallam once more.
Coach Mark Beavis commented, “We set ourselves the target of trying out a few new things today, of keeping things simple and winning the trophy once more. It’s pleasing that we have met all three of those targets.”
The squad complete their preseason preparations this weekend with games v Chapeltown and Nottingham University before lining up against Preston at Abbeydale at 6pm on Saturday 17th September in their first England Hockey North Conference match.
