Following our announcement regarding the increase in annual player registration from £25 to £30, we’ve received a few questions about what the registration fee covers, why it is the same for everyone, and how that money is used.
We wanted to provide some further clarity.
What does a BHUK registration actually cover?
A BHUK registration is a federation registration, rather than a fee to participate in a particular league, tournament or number of games.
Your registration contributes towards the infrastructure required to operate and develop Ball Hockey UK, including insurance, governance, administration, safeguarding, competition infrastructure, website and registration systems, officiating development and other costs associated with running a national federation.
This is why the registration cost is the same whether somebody plays one game during the year or 100 games. It is an annual registration with the federation, not a pay-per-game charge.
Why is the fee the same for seniors and juniors?
The £30 annual registration applies equally across our membership, including senior and junior players.
Many of the costs BHUK incurs in registering and supporting a player do not reduce because that player is a junior. We don't receive discounted rates on areas such as our insurance and many of the systems and infrastructure we need to operate the sport.
Unfortunately, if BHUK isn't receiving those discounts, we aren't in a position to pass a discount on.
We also believe the fairest and simplest system is to spread the cost of operating the federation across the membership through one affordable annual registration fee.
At £30 for an entire year – £2.50 per month – we are continuing to work hard to keep registration as affordable as possible.
Where does the money go?
Every pound generated through registrations is reinvested into UK ball hockey.
Nobody is taking a profit from player registration fees.
The purpose of the registration fee is simply to spread the cost of funding and developing the sport fairly amongst the people who participate in it.
Historically, individuals have personally invested significant amounts of their own money to help move the sport forward. That isn't a sustainable model for a national federation. The long-term aim has to be for the sport to become increasingly self-sustaining, alongside securing external commercial partners and additional funding.
Junior and Tier 3 events
We completely understand the frustration regarding the delays to some of our Junior and Tier 3 events, and we share that frustration.
Those delays are unfortunate, but they do not change our commitment to either area of the sport.
In fact, the opposite is true.
We are working towards creating more opportunities at these levels than we have ever previously been able to offer. As soon as we are in a position to deliver those events properly, our intention is to provide a stronger and more sustainable programme for both junior players and developing senior players.
The growth of ball hockey over the last 12 months has been extremely encouraging, but growth also creates additional costs and requires further infrastructure.
The additional £5 per player, per year will help us continue building that infrastructure and investing in the future of the game.
We appreciate people asking questions and challenging us where they want greater clarity. We want BHUK to be transparent about why decisions are made and, most importantly, where members' money is going.
The objective is simple: every pound we can generate for BHUK goes towards making ball hockey bigger, better and more sustainable for everyone involved.
