In only their second ever outing, our County Senior 1XI produced an exciting performance that offered real promise for the season ahead.
Despite creating chances of their own, Rovers were unlucky to go in 2-0 down at half-time. In the second half, fitness began to tell against strong opposition, though centre-half pairing Jacob Watson and skipper Jack Squires worked tirelessly to keep the side organised. Behind them, goalkeeper Ben Asquith pulled off a string of saves, three of his best coming late on to ensure the scoreline stayed respectable as Middlewood continued to push forward looking for goals.
In midfield, Jordan Howarth stood out with a composed display that belied his age, ably supported by older brother Reagan in the centre of the park.
Pen*stone Church Reserves added four more after the break, their sharpness showing as the game wore on, but the effort, commitment and skill of Middlewood’s young side never faltered.
Manager Christian Fisher, fresh from 60 minutes at right-back, can be proud of his team’s performance and encouraged by what was a highly creditable showing against one of the toughest tests the County Senior League has to offer.
Final score:
Pen*stone Church 6 - Middlewood Rovers 2
(Half-time: 2-0)
