🏆 Summer Tournament No. 2: Eckington Boys and Belles FC 💙

Some football tournaments are remembered for the goals, the performances and the trophies. Others are remembered for an enormous dog, two airborne gazebos and the unexpected appearance of an angle grinder. This one had the lot! 😂

We somehow managed to become one of the main talking points of the tournament before most people had even noticed what we were doing on the pitch.

Our mascot for the day was a very large Great Dane who attracted almost as much attention as the football. A vigorous gust of wind then sent both of our gazebos on an unscheduled trip across the pitches, bending both frames in the process. At that point, one of our parents calmly produced an angle grinder from nowhere and began cutting through the mangled wreckage! 😂🛠️

We also had the pleasure of meeting Sheffield Wednesday FC manager Henrik Pedersen, who was brilliant with the girls. He gave them loads of his time, asked them plenty of questions and had a really good chat with them before posing for some photos. 📸

There was plenty to celebrate on the pitch too. The girls went unbeaten throughout the group stage, winning three and drawing four of their seven matches.

They finished second in the group, scoring 11 goals and conceding just four, which earned them a well-deserved place in the Group A final. ⚽💙

The final didn’t quite go our way, but the girls were brave, worked incredibly hard for each other and kept going right until the end of a very long day.

They should have been really proud of themselves. We certainly were, and considering how long they’ve been playing football, they were already showing that they could compete with some of the very best teams around. 👏

⚽ Friendly Match #1 💙

Next up in our slightly overdue pre-season catch-up is a friendly against Nether Green from a good few weeks ago now… we did say we’d been busy! 😅

It was one of the first opportunities for the girls to put into practice some of the work we’d been doing on our shape in training, and there were already some really encouraging signs.

They worked hard for each other, recovered well when we lost possession and produced plenty of moments where they looked really connected as a team. 🛜

There was still lots to work on, particularly using more of the pitch when we had the ball and maintaining our spacing rather than being drawn towards it, however, seeing the girls beginning to recognise where they needed to be on the pitch and how their positioning could help their teammates was a big positive.

A big well done to Gracie, who was our Girl of the Game 🏅 She was positionally excellent in defence before moving into a forward role and linking the play brilliantly with some clever passing and movement.

What a season. What a team. What a way to celebrate it all! 🎉⚽

We’ve been a bit quiet on here recently… not because nothing’s been happening, but because we’ve been soooo BUSY! Over the next couple of weeks we’ll be catching you up on everything, starting with our Awards Day.

We kicked things off with a Players and Parents rounders match. 🏏 Fair play to the parents, they did alright considering most of us haven’t picked up a bat since primary school. 😂👏

Then it was off to the pub for awards, 🏆 food, drinks, and plenty of laughs with our amazing families. 🍕 🍻

Beyond the stats, the group has grown into something really special. They’ve grown as players, as teammates, and as friends. We couldn’t be prouder of every single one of them. 👏

Tournament Runners-Up 🥈

A brilliant effort from the girls this weekend as they finished runners-up at the Dinnington Town FC Summer Tournament.

We qualified for the final with a group game to spare, starting quickly, playing some lovely football, and scoring 11 goals across our group games. More importantly, the girls worked hard, played for each other, and showed real bravery throughout the day.

The final was a close one and we came away on the wrong side of a 1-0 result, but the girls should be incredibly proud of what they achieved.

Coach’s note to self: no ice creams until AFTER our matches next time! 🍦 ⚽🙈
