The power of a positive mindset should not be overlooked when it comes to the world of lifting and general fitness. It might sound like the last thing on your fitness checklist, but you'd be surprised with just how effective a tool it can be.

A year ago, I stopped deadlifting, I simply wasn't enjoying it anymore. I got to the point where I only trained them because I felt I had to, never looking forward to it and often struggling with the exercise. Resulting in my mood dipping hard and negatively affecting the rest of my session. I soon found myself trapped in this negative cycle and all because I had placed this unnecessary pressure upon myself.

Cut to a year later, I've continued my training in other areas and the deadlifts called to me once more. I came back with a much more positive mindset and smashed out a PB on my first attempt. Now yes, as previously mentioned I have still continued my other training, yes I am stronger than I once was and of course they're all contributing factors. However you can see what happens when that mindset changes in the very same day, a mere 10minutes apart from each other in the second video.

Although ecstatic with my PB achievement, I had started to overthink in my rest period, began to procrastinate and even think of failure and talking myself out of it. At this point, I had already failed before I even touched the bar again.

Overall you should not underestimate the power of a positive mindset. Yes training, nutrition, gear, it's all important. But a positive mindset is the foundation of what we build all of this on. It's the driving force behind our will to overcome these obstacles and is a key tool to utilise during your sessions.

First attempt at 170kg back squat, attempt because as you can see pretty clearly it did not go exactly to plan.
However what you can also see is that I didn't get mad, there's a big smile on my face.

It can be so easy to beat ourselves up over failure, after all we can all be our own worst enemy. But this doesn't help us at all, it can get in your head and next thing you know the rest of the session is a wash. Instead take what it from you can, where did I go wrong, what do I need to improve and what steps do I need to take to achieve these goals.

Stop beating yourself up over failure, learn from it, use it, grow.

It goes without saying that hydration is important. Water is essential for the optimisation of your body and it's functions.

However, water also plays a significant part in your performance and has been proven that individuals who do not drink during exercise perform less well than if they had.

Muscles are 75% water, a loss of only 3% of this water causes a 10% drop in strength and an 8% loss of speed. During an hour's exercise an average person loses about one litre of fluid. Although this will increase the harder you work and the hotter the environment.

Don't make the simple mistake of not staying hydrated being the reason your performance suffers. Drink plenty before, during and after exercise to avoid dehydration.

Testing myself this week, seeing if my strength is still progressing and how close I am to my previous 1RM. Whether you're training for a comp or not, it's always useful to find what your 1RM (1 rep max) is.

This serves as a baseline from where you can track your own progress and can help with setting yourself challenging, yet realistic goals. Especially if you're planning on using a RPE scale within your own training.

RPE - rate of perceived exertion

40KGx4 DB overhead press - certainly my proudest milestone of 2023. I've put on some Christmas timber, but at least I'm putting it to good use! 💪🏻🎄
