Longevity in Jiu Jitsu Part 2
Jiu Jitsu isn’t just a peak athletic sport it’s also a martial art and hobby that can be a healthy part of your lifestyle or it can be something that breaks you mentally and physically. The approach is important. If you’re 40+ and looking to do Jiu Jitsu for the long term here’s some tips.
2. Don’t roll, at least not at first and not as much as the younger practitioners. If you are just starting in BJJ have no grappling experience and you’re middle aged you shouldn’t be rolling, you will get hurt unnecessarily At the very minimum you should be aware of how to keep yourself safe in all the major positions in grappling before taking part in rolling, depending on how often you train and your clubs curriculum this could take anywhere from 2 to 6 months and there is nothing wrong with this. Don’t let a 20 yr old rolling 5 times a week almost straight away influence you. You have to lay a technical foundation for safe future training, Fundamentals classes for beginners work, they will teach you the skills necessary to be able to train safely and you should feel comfortable before advancing to classes with rolling. We use Isolation rounds at SBG, this is live drilling against progressively resisting opponents to bridge the gap to full training and it allows you to build a solid technical foundation against resisting opponents while removing some of the chaos and pressure that can lead to injury. As you get older this form of training should replace more and more of your rolling to allow you to continue to develop while minimising wear and tear on the body. When I am getting ready to compete I don’t add more rolling I add more isolation rounds so I can maximise mat time while minimising injury chance and pinpoint the areas that I need to work on most. Rolling is the most fun part of training and an ultimately essential one but ,as we age we have to be mature enough to adapt our training get the most out of it so we can continue to do it for years to come.
