Almondsbury FC 2 1

Portishead suffer defeat for the first time this season in an even encounter at The Field.

Posset began the game a little sluggishly, perhaps due to a weekend off, and it was Almondsbury who had the better of the early exchanges. Indeed the Almonds thought they had an early lead when the ball ended up in the back of the net, only for the assistant referees raised flag to curtail the celebrations.

Shanks-boon in the posset goal was tested from a free kick from distance, but it was a comfortable stop. Town were restricted to half chances but good work from Charlie Williams and Calum Townsend on the left won a corner, from which Matt Lloyd teased the defender before delivering a dangerous ball into the box which was well dealt with by the keeper.

James Wakefield sent a Header from a corner wide, when he will feel he should have done better.
As half time approached Almondsbury had the best chance of the half, a dangerous cross was whipped in and the strikerโ€™s header flew just over the bar.
Right before the interval Charlie Williams took on his defender cut inside and curled an effort just over the bar. Goalless then at half time.

Portishead started the second half well, Matt Lloyd and Robbie Cox combining well to force a corner, from which Hamish Hurst headed wide when it looked like a certain goal.

But for all of Townโ€™s possession Almondsbury always looked dangerous on the counter and so it proved as they broke quickly and played it into their striker who shrugged off the defender before finishing well into the far corner.

Portishead responded well to falling behind and from a corner there was an almighty scramble which ended with the ball dropping to Gabriel Nichols but he put his shot wide. Next to go close was Townsend, who was sent clear following some tenacious tackling in the middle of the park by Robbie Cox, Calumโ€™s fierce drive tested the keeper, who did well to hold it.

Town were applying some real pressure but in a sucker punch the Almonds extended their lead; a quick break sent their number 9 free and he finished with a rocket into the top corner.

Town responded immediately Calum Townsend bursting into the Almondsbury area and being caught, down he went and the referee pointed to the spot. It was Townsend himself who took on the responsibility and he coolly rolled it down the middle, as the keeper dived away.

Game on then, and Town were pushing for an equaliser - from a corner Hurst couldnโ€™t make a clean connection with a chance, and a ball in from Josh Honey was inches away from a diving Townsend at the back post.

As Town pushed for a leveller Almondsbury nearly caught them out again, a good move ending in a shot cannoning back off the post and Shanks-Boon making a good save.

As the minutes ticked by there was still time for substitute Rob Latham to spin in the box but fire over and for Matt Lloyd to go close; his shot screwed narrowly wide.

So we taste defeat for the first time this season tonight, but on another day we would have left with at least a point.

Operating as usual

Could we just remind some of our visitors on matchdays that when our footballs are kicked over the fence into the rec, they do not become the property of anyone who finds them. On two occasions yesterday we had to challenge such visitors. Firstly a young lady who hid the ball under her coat before walking off with young children towards the new estate and then a teenage boy who hid a matchball under his shirt as he walked off towards the Manor Lane exit. Both seemed shocked and slightly aggrieved that they had been challenged about this but insisted they were just about to return them.
Our footballs cost money and have to be replaced so feel free to donate ยฃ40 if you really want one and we would be happy to order you one.
We know who you are but have resisted taking this further on this occasion. We welcome all the support of the community in this

All at Shrivenham FC wish to send thoughts and prayers to Christine and family after the sad loss of our former Chairman Ian Richardson this week. He did so much for the club and was instrumental in putting us on the map. He had the very rare quality of being able to stay calm and level headed whatever was going on around him. Testament to this being that he was able to chair meetings back in the day when we had a particularly โ€˜thirstyโ€™ committeeโ€ฆ. The phrase โ€œtrying to herd catsโ€ springs to mind. The club and all those that knew him will miss him greatly. ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿค๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿค๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿค

Our home Devs game v Faringdon on Thursday gives us the opportunity for supporters of both teams to mix and support each other to pay our respects to Queen Elizabeth. I would encourage as many people as possible to come along and support each other. Entry will be via donation and all profits will be shared with Fatboys Childrens cancer charity.

Disappointing result today but thatโ€™s football. Need to pick ourselves up and go again Monday against in the league.

Blunsdon and Wroughton progressed to compete in the final of Fatboys Trophy next week. Old rivals Shrivenham and Faringdon will contest the โ€œspoonโ€ game at 1.00pm. We are delighted to welcome Maizie as our extra special VIP guest to the club next week ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿค๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

Thanks to teams officials and supporters today.
To add some context, this is the e mail I got from our first ref who donated his services for free:-

Hi we met at faringdon i reffed the first game.
Kevin said to send over a little about why I reffed today and then my daughter could present the trophy after the final game next week.
Maizie was 27 month old when diagnosed with stage 3 aggressive Neuroblastoma a rare childhood cancer with only 35% chance of beating it. Weโ€™ve been very lucky that Maizies a real fighter and this September will start secondary school.
Although sheโ€™s cancer free it hasnโ€™t come with its problems, since treatment she had operations to remove teeth and her gallbladder due to the amount of chemo she had. She now has problems with her spleen and more will follow but weโ€™re just so grateful sheโ€™s still with us. Maizie loves her football she player for st edmunds lionesses u12 and supports Oxford united.
Iโ€™ve just got home and she would love to come over next Saturday we canโ€™t make first game but definitely the second one.
I do all I can to help childrens cancer charities so please ask if you need anyone again

Good first runout for a very youthful Devs side v Stratton this evening. Match finished 2-2 after Luke went down in instalments to win a clear penalty late on. Thanks to our hosts for arranging at the last minute.

A very good workout for the lads last night saw us lose 2-1 to our step 3 opposition. A pleasure to host North Leigh and their supporters. Good look this season.

Come along to Barrington Park to rehydrate whilst watching our 1st team take on newly promoted North Leigh. Always guarantee a cheery welcome on the gate from โ€œBig Rogโ€โ€ฆโ€ฆ.as long as you pay to get in of course !! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

Cannot pretend we are happy with two away draws in the FA Cup and Vase but looking forward to the challenge of taking on Didcot Town FC and Portishead Town FC . The income from these competitions is critical to non-league teams and itโ€™s a a real shame that the FA feel that the money available to eventual winners makes any difference. Needs a rethink so that those that compete in the earlier rounds benefit from the huge ssums won by the professional teams that win the competition.

A fabulous first training session for our under 17โ€™s last night. The league will now be a mixed under 17/18 one so we are looking to add to the group with some lads in the higher age group too. If you are interested e-mail [email protected]

UNDER 17โ€™s TRAINING 7pm 28 June at Watchfield Recreation Ground. Just a reminder that we are holding an open meet/greet and training session for the upcoming season. Top scorer at the weekend was Andrew D who got all six correct on Saturday and nervously waited for a Rangers equaliser on Sunday that didn't come!

Behind Andrew we had 5's from Sam, Alan B, Tim, Dave L and Lyn but with five away's in the selection it was a tough week!

How tough was show by the number of zeroes - no less than eight!

This is the last week of the current round of the Leagues so the usual promotion, relegation and prize money to be decided!
