🐎 Thoracic Spine – The Missing Piece in Rider Mobility?

We talk a lot about tight muscles, but thoracic spine mobility can be just as important for riders.

Your thoracic spine is the mid-to-upper section of your back, and reduced movement through this area is incredibly common β€” particularly when we spend so much of everyday life sitting, driving or working at a desk.

For riders, limited thoracic mobility can contribute to:

❌ Rounded shoulders
❌ Poor upper-body posture
❌ Difficulty following and absorbing your horse’s movement
❌ Compensating through the lower back
❌ Difficulty keeping soft, independent hands
❌ Feeling stiff or braced in the saddle

Improving mobility through the upper back can help you stay taller and more supple, while allowing your shoulders, arms and hands to work more independently.

✨ A mobile rider can move with the horse, rather than against them.

🐎 Upper Body – Are You Carrying Tension Into the Saddle?

Do you ever finish a ride with tight shoulders, a stiff neck or feel like your arms just won’t soften? Your upper body can have a bigger influence on your riding than you realise.

Common areas of tightness in riders include:

✨ Latissimus dorsi – tight lats can restrict shoulder mobility and make it harder to maintain soft, independent rein contact.

✨ Pectorals – shortened chest muscles can encourage rounded shoulders, restrict upper-body mobility and create tension through the arms and reins.

✨ Upper trapezius & levator scapulae – common places to hold tension, particularly when we’re concentrating, stressed or lacking shoulder stability.

✨ Neck muscles – looking down, bracing or carrying tension while riding can contribute to stiffness through the neck and shoulders.

Your horse feels what happens at the other end of the reins. 🐴

Improving upper-body mobility and strength can help create:

βœ”οΈ Softer rein contact
βœ”οΈ Better posture
βœ”οΈ Greater shoulder mobility
βœ”οΈ More independent hands and arms
βœ”οΈ Less tension in the saddle

A more supple you = a softer, more effective rider. ✨

Horse riders tend to develop predictable patterns of tightness because of the time spent in the saddle, asymmetrical loading, and repetitive movement. Here are some of the most common muscles and areas:

Part 2- 🐎 Core & Pelvis

Quadratus Lumborum (QL)
One of the most common areas of tightness in riders.
Often contributes to one hip sitting higher than the other and uneven weight distribution.

Lumbar Erector Spinae
Can become overworked if the core isn't providing enough support.
Often associated with lower back stiffness.

Thoracolumbar Fascia
Frequently becomes stiff in riders with limited spinal mobility.

Mobility and strength go hand in hand.

Horse riders tend to develop predictable patterns of tightness because of the time spent in the saddle, asymmetrical loading, and repetitive movement.

In this post series, we will look at some of the most common muscles and areas that experience tightness.

Part 1: Lower Body

Hip flexors (Iliopsoas & Re**us Femoris)
Often tight from prolonged hip flexion in the saddle.
Can contribute to an anterior pelvic tilt and difficulty maintaining a deep, balanced seat.

Adductors (Inner Thighs)
Frequently overactive from gripping with the legs.
Tightness can reduce hip mobility and make the leg less independent.

Hamstrings
Can become shortened, particularly in riders who spend long periods sitting.
May limit pelvic movement and affect the ability to follow the horse's motion.

Gluteal Muscles (particularly Piriformis and Glute Medius)
Glute medius is often weak or inhibited rather than tight.
Piriformis can become tight as it compensates for poor hip stability.

Calves (Gastrocnemius & Soleus)
Tight calves can limit ankle flexibility, making it harder to maintain a supple heel.

It's so important that, as horse-riders, we work on both our mobility and strength to be as balanced as possible on our horses!
