We are deeply saddened by the passing of Sir Richard Alston, one of the most influential figures in British contemporary dance.
Alston’s extraordinary career spanned more than five decades. He choreographed his first work in 1968, founded Strider, the UK’s first independent dance group, in 1972, and went on to become Resident Choreographer and Artistic Director of Rambert.
He was also Artistic Director of The Place, founded the Richard Alston Dance Company in 1994, and created more than 50 works for his company. His choreography was renowned for its exceptional musicality, physicality and elegance.
Sir Richard was knighted in 2019 for services to dance, recognising an extraordinary contribution to British dance and to generations of dancers and choreographers.
His influence on contemporary dance in the UK is immense, and his work continues to inspire dancers, choreographers and students today.
Our thoughts are with his family, friends, collaborators and the many artists whose lives he touched.
