It’s every parent’s worst nightmare, to get a call, and find out your child is in danger. Imagine how you will feel, knowing that your child will be able to handle themselves, should something go wrong. They will always know how to find the safest way out of a bad situation, and will only use their Martial Arts skills as a last resort.
Many think that Martial Arts is about violence, and they dread to think they may receive a call from school that their child has been in a fight. This thought is very much based on fear, which is not going to give the benefits of Martial Arts for kids. We are teaching them to overcome their fears. But, it’s quite often the opposite (in most cases). The reason for this is the mental teachings that come with training in Martial Arts.
The aim in Martial Arts is to teach students that the best way to end a fight is to never begin. This can be done through non-violent conflict resolution skills such as using:
👊 Confident body language
👊 Strong tone of voice
👊 Keeping eye contact
👊 Staying in control of our emotions
👊 Avoiding dangerous situations
👊 Assertive language
👊 Being aware of your surroundings and exit points
👊 Using breathing techniques to manage stress and anxiety
If this doesn’t work, they should have the physical abilities to be able to end the fight before they become a victim. In training, they will be put in scenarios which may replicate dangerous situations whilst being in a safe and controlled environment. So they are better prepared if anything were to happen. This comes from training more and training harder, there are no shortcuts.
Comment below with how your child is prepared for conflict.

Small habits are underestimated. Adding in one small habit at a time adds interest towards your goals! Never underestimate the ability of small seemingly insignificant changes.

The shortest distance between two points is a straight line. However the natural way a person is instinctively inclined to hit someone with full force is usually circular. Ask any untrained person to hit a bag and see if it isn't true.
A straight punch goes directly to your target via 'the shortest distance' and with a little training it can be the most powerful punch, especially as your opponent steps into you, compounding the power delivered in a way you can never truly get from another angle.
"The leading straight punch is the backbone of all punching in Jeet Kune Do. It is used as an offensive and defensive weapon..." Bruce Lee.

How to find the right Martial Arts school for you?
Do your research before joining.
Some questions you can ask before joining are:
• What’s involved in your Grading Syllabus?
• How does the Instructor Team develop their Martial Arts?
• Which affiliation, if any, are you part of?
• What style and/or variations do you teach?
At FitRoots, we realised that we would be doing our students a disservice, if we did not teach the mental components of Martial Arts as part of their Grading.
These are arguably just as important as the physical aspect.
Our students learn Philosophy, Psychology, Biology, as well as all the Physical techniques in Martial Arts. We want to ensure every student develops on their Martial Arts journey in the whole sense.
All of that, plus when you train with like-minded people who are interested in leveling up in mind, body, and spirit you are part of a valuable community you can learn from and share with.

Has modern society really extinguished the creative spark among our youth?
“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then is not an act, but a habit.” Aristotle
The current focus on testing in schools ingrains the philosophy of a strict ‘right or wrong’ which is not decided by the individual.
How does the school syllabus regulate creativity, and formularise how ‘good’ someone’s expression of self is through their art, music, dance, critical thinking etc.
The idea that there is only one right answer to a question, can be damaging to the development of creativity among children. There’s not much room for unexpected, divergent thought.
Everything is preset, everyone, therefore, is on the same journey, rather than their own.
It’s always been important to us to teach our students Martial Arts in a wholesome way.
Our students don’t just earn their Black Belt in their physical training, but they carry it through all areas of their lives. To us, we wouldn’t be doing right by our students to only elevate them inside the Dojo.
But how can we help develop their creativity through Martial Arts?
Contrary to popular belief, creativity can flourish within limits.
You don’t NEED to let your child roam free and express themselves unguided. After all, as their teachers, we have some wisdom/lessons to pass down to them.
I’m not fully sold on the whole radical unschooling thing, but the rigid school curriculum mentality doesn’t make sense to me either.
So, letting our students explore within boundaries helps them explore their creativity all while feeling secure in the fact that they are doing the right thing and are on the right journey.
Many Martial Arts are taught in a quite rigid manner, this makes it easier to grade students so they can get their Black Belt.
We let students find their own style, one that suits their strengths, body and mind type.

For the first 21 years of my life, I thought my path was to become the Kickboxing World Champion, and I was completely absorbed in making this my life goal.
This same passion and commitment has now be tranferred into the FitRoots vision, for my students, my family and the wider community.
Remember your path can change, and just like Bruce Lee said "Be Like Water."
Sometimes the path you are on comes to an end, other times your course is redirected for a greater purpose. Don't fight it learn to adapt and flow with what comes your way.
