Youโll find this useful๐
To know where to go, you need to know where you've been. So, before you change your training programme, audit yourself properly.
๐๐๐ค๐ ๐๐ข๐ฏ๐ ๐ฆ๐ข๐ง๐ฎ๐ญ๐๐ฌ.
No Garmin, TrainingPeaks or FTP Calculator.
๐ Just answer these five questions honestly:
๐. ๐๐ซ๐๐ข๐ง๐ข๐ง๐
Am I actually doing the sessions that will move me forward?
Or am I just doing the sessions I have time for?
๐. ๐๐ญ๐ซ๐๐ง๐ ๐ญ๐ก
Am I building the strength I need to perform and stay capable?
Or has cycling gradually pushed everything else out?
๐. ๐
๐ฎ๐๐ฅ
Am I eating to support the performance I want?
Or am I trying to train hard while simultaneously trying to eat as little as possible?
๐. ๐๐๐๐จ๐ฏ๐๐ซ๐ฒ
Am I genuinely recovering?
Or am I finishing work, collapsing on the sofa and calling Netflix โrecoveryโ?
๐. ๐๐จ๐ง๐ญ๐ซ๐จ๐ฅ
When life gets busy, do I have a plan?
Or does work, stress, family and social commitments dictate what happens to my training?
Now score each one from 1-5.
1 = I'm miles away from where I want to be.
5 = I've genuinely got this dialled in.
Add your scores up.
20-25: You're probably not far away. You need refinement, not reinvention.
15-19: There are some obvious leaks in the system.
Under 15: Your problem probably isn't motivation.
Your system isn't supporting the person you're trying to become.
And that's the important bit.
Because you can keep adding more rides.
More intervals. More miles. More discipline.
But if the foundations aren't working together, more just creates more fatigue.
The goal isn't to do more.
It's to make what you're already doing work better.
So before you build your next training plan, audit the person doing the training.
