We all like to play fair – right? Bala Sport is a Community interest Company (CIC).

High-quality footballs and rugby balls for schools, clubs and players 🏆 Made in a Fairtrade-certified factory in Sialkot, with a 15% worker premium paid 🤝 Bala is a UK Community Interest Company. Well sometimes big brands don’t let us – to bring us the cheapest balls they might skimp on how much they pay the factory - and it’s more often than not that workers and hand stitchers are the ones that lose out. Bala Sport was formed to level the playing field between sports consumers and the makers of the balls through a fair price and fair working conditions – and still offer the best quality equipment for enhanced performance. This is a relaunch of a co-operative organisation that originally was set up to expand the availability and use of ethically produced Fairtrade sports balls focusing initially on footballs in the UK and beyond. Soon we plan to introduce rugby balls and netballs into the range. We currently had a range of Fairtrade Rugby and Netballs and Fairly traded footballs available. A key role of this CIC is to raise awareness of the issues around fair trade sports balls and how they help make a difference in the lives of some of the estimated 40,000 workers in Sialkot, Pakistan (where around 70% of the world’s hand-stitched balls are made). When a high quality Fairtrade certified or fairly traded ball is sold in the UK the buyer is guaranteed that the men and women who made these hand stitched products are paid a fair wage and benefit from fair working conditions and also the additional Fairtrade Premium. This is a cash sum used for social, economic and environmental development projects decided upon through a democratic process and typically include free healthcare and educational projects for workers and their families and the wider community. Bala Sport is also committed however to supporting sports teams closer to home and help bring people of all backgrounds together through sport and ball games.

What does fair play look like before a ball reaches the pitch? ⚽🏉

We were pleased to see Bala Sport included in a Belgian Fair Trade Week feature about fairly traded sports balls. It asks a question we care about deeply: who made the ball, and under what conditions?

Our balls are made by Bola Gema in Sialkot, Pakistan. Bala pays an additional 15% premium, and the workers decide together how to use it. Their choice has been a subsidised grocery shop for their colleagues (illustrated)

That’s why we say fair play starts with the ball.

For Fairtrade Fortnight, we’re sharing a free 'A Fair Bounce?' lesson plan to help young people explore what makes a game, a purchase and a trade fair.

The weather has taken a turn 🌧, but for one man this won't matter.

Colum, one of the trustees at the fabulous Rainbow Turtle will be getting wet anyway, taking part in the Go Swim Aquathlon in Loch Lomond tomorrow. A 750 metre swim followed by a 5k run 💪

Colum's really sticking his neck out to turtle-y smash his fundraising target - so please shell out and fuel his flippers!

Rainbow Turtle aren't just a shop, they do great community work through podcasts, education and workshops - creating fair trade for the new generation.
