2nd XI Match Report
Easington CW CC 1st XI vs SSCC 2nd XI

It was the final day of the 2nd teams season, with promotion on the cards their opponents were none other than promotion rivals Easington CWCC.
BWP won the toss off, with Shields electing to bat first in what looked to be a good day for it.
Opening up was BWP and K Sathishkumar, the opening partnership did not last long due to BWP getting yorked for a very unconvincing 4. Sam Marshall entered the pitch. What followed was a vintage Sam Marshall innings, playing a couple run downs to third man before playing one too many as he ran one down 1st slips throat for a cultured 5 of just the 27 deliveries, excellent work taking the shine of the new ball Samuel. Connor Bryden came next, his stay was one to forget, he heaved one to the boundary for 4 then ran himself out soon after (which he continues to blame his partner for). We found ourselves 52-3 with Satishkumar on 29. He was joined in the middle by Super Jack Saveraux, the pair of them put on an excellent display of batting rotating the strike well and dispatching the bad ones. In the 27th over Sathishkumar brought up his 50 but unfortunately he did not last much longer as he top edged a long hop a couple overs later being dismissed for an excellent 53 of 84 deliveries. The 2s found themselves at 119-4 as Lugsy Malone’s protege Sam Bradbury met up with Saveraux in the middle. The pair of them built another important partnership as Jack Saveraux brought up his 50 and Bradbury continued to knock it about nicely. Then when the score was 152 Super Jack Saveraux was dismissed swinging for the short boundary bringing his all important knock of 67 👀 from 79 to an end. Then the middle and lower order followed with young O Hall being ran out for 1, Sam Bradbury being bowled for 16 and Oliver Blevins-Clarke got bowled for 9. James “Rodders”Hutchinson hit some nice shots before being caught for 26, and R Vohra fell first ball leaving Rashed Mehmood on 2 not out as the Shields innings came to a close at 206 all out, a good effort from the Lads.
The defence came next with typical openers R Vohra and Rash leading the attack. Vohra struck in the 2nd over of the innings after getting the Easington opener to chase one he shouldn’t have forcing Jack Sav into a smart catch behind the sticks. Rash then joined the fun snicking off the other opener to 2nd slip. Vohra proceeded to take his 2nd of the game in the following over, Shields started exactly as they would’ve hoped too having Easington under the cosh early as they found themselves 6-3. After a small partnership Easington’s number 5 Wilson (10) fell to who else but Vohra after a good piece of bowling getting him through the gate. Our opponents found themselves at 33-4 with Easington skipper Akers being joined by A Price. With Shields in the driving seat, Easington mounted a counter attack led by Akers who began targeting boundaries and finding them at will. The pressure was now back on the 2s as Akers brought up his half century off 39 balls with a straight 6 into the football pitch. Meanwhile his partner Price was batting sensibly at the other end. Shields desperate for a breakthrough lent on Vohra, bringing him back on for his second spell and thankfully he got it cleaning up Price (33). Easington were 129-5 with the dangerous Akers still in on 74. In Vohra’s final over he completed his fifer bringing his total wickets against Easington this season across two games to 13, not too shabby. With Vohra and OBC bowling their 9 overs, the 2s looked to K Sathishkumar, and James “Rodders” Hutchinson who would be hoping to bounce back from his first spell that Akers took a liking too. Thankfully Rodders shook off any earlier doubts by taking a wicket in the first over of his second spell. The score was 160-7 with only Akers standing in the way of what would be a monumental victory for Shields. The next couple of overs the runs began to slow down for Akers and Easington. However they were still in reach, but in Sathishkumar’s third over Akers slapped one back to the bowler who held on to a good catch bringing an end to an excellent knock by the Easington skipper falling just 2 short of his century. 172-8 quickly became 174-9 after Rodders snicked off Richardson for 2.
Shields needing just one wicket, Easington needed 33 runs, a big ask for a 10 wicket partnership and despite Rickaby hitting a couple of boundaries off Sathishkumar, he eventually holed out as he chipped one into BWP’s buckets at long on.

This secured 25 points and an absolutely massive win for Shields putting them into 2nd in the table and ensuring they can’t finish lower than 3rd pretty much guaranteeing there promotion to DNECL 2 next season top work lads.

But this weeks Temporary Match Report Secretary Man Of The Match (TMRSMOTM) goes to K Satishkumar who batted really well getting his maiden 2nd team 50 showing great resilience throughout, and despite being expensive he never fails to make things happen with the ball getting the all important wicket, well done on winning the TMRSMOTM.
