SOLENT E-SAFE — Legal E-Bikes. Safer Streets.
We are asking all cycle repair businesses across Fareham and Gosport to sign up to Solent E-Safe and collectively refuse to service illegal e-bikes.
It’s one practical thing our local cycling industry can do to help keep our roads, paths and public spaces safer for children, pedestrians and cyclists.
Is your e-bike or your child’s e-bike — legal?
To be classed as an Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle (EAPC):
250W maximum continuous rated motor power
Electrical assistance must stop at 15.5mph
It must have pedals capable of propelling the bike
Riders must be 14 or over
Throttle up to 3.7mph (6km/h): permitted for walk/start assistance
Throttle above 3.7mph without pedalling: type-approval rules apply
Throttle above 15.5mph: Not permitted
If your bike doesn’t meet these requirements, it may legally be treated as a motor vehicle. This means you may need:
The appropriate driving licence
CBT
DVLA registration
Motor insurance
Vehicle tax
An approved motorcycle helmet
Vehicle/type approval
An MOT
We’re asking all cycle repair businesses to stand together: support legal e-bikes, refuse illegal ones and do our bit to make our community safer.
We also do not support the illegal public use of privately owned e-scooters and these are also covered by this initiative.
Please LIKE & SHARE and help us spread the message across Fareham and Gosport.
