After a run its vital to cool down properly as it helps avoid future injuries. Yoga is perfect for supplementing your running, by adding it into your routine, you will gain flexibility and strength, reduce the risk of injury and improve your overall running performance. With regular yoga practice you will benefit from:

- Stretching to overcome muscle tightness, seasoned runners often experience tight hamstrings and Achilles tendons, and yoga can help lengthen these areas of the body reducing the risk of injuries.
- Lengthening the posterior chain during the postures which increases your stride length.
- Tuning into new muscles and muscle groups that will support your primary mover muscles while running.
- Yoga breathing which can increase lung capacity, which will help with your endurance during longer runs.

The great thing about yoga is that it’s easy to do at home but if you'd like an introduction to yoga or some guidance to perfect your practice, why not join Anna in a small class where she can help.

Classes to help you cool down after parkrun are Saturdays 10:00 am, a 10 minute walk from the Cowherds on the Common. Email [email protected] to book your space or ask any questions.

We are looking forward to welcoming Simona at the studio, she's teaching a new beginners class starting on March 1st, if you'd like to book a spot go to our website https://buff.ly/3Hoz3Co.

She discovered Pilates when looking for motivation and creative ways to manager her returning back and shoulder pain. Having practiced various forms of exercise over her adult years (including cycling, weight lifting, martial arts and dance) and suffered with numerous injuries she found Pilates had completely changed the way she moves and is passionate about teaching others to find ease of movement in their own bodies.

Simon has qualified as a Personal Trainer with Fitness Business Academy in 2014, and obtained her Level 3 Diploma in Teaching Mat pilates from Active IQ via JPilates in 2022. She teaches traditional Pilates inspired mat classes focusing on building strength and mobility.

Hello beautiful people,

I just wanted to say hi and introduce myself to those of you I haven't yet had the chance to meet.

My name is Anna and I teach yoga classes in Southampton.

I found yoga nearly 9 years ago. At the time I was looking for something which would help me to be a little kinder to myself and help me grow from the place I was in.

What happended when I started to practice regularly was magical and over time I realised that I wanted to share this beautiful practice with others.

My classes are a space for you to grow and learn how wonderful your body is. We breathe and move in an intutitive way with zero judgement but lots of smiles and sometimes laughter.

If you would like to meet like minded people and connect to your inner self, come and join me on the mat.

Thursdays 6-7pm and Saturdays 10-11am at Pilates on the Avenue, Southampton.

Get in touch ([email protected]), I would love to hear from you.

Peace and love ❤️
Anna 🙏 # # #

Have you ever wondered what happens to PVC exercise mats when you throw them out? Not good! Here are some other ideas...

A summary of the PVC yoga mat problem, and how to be eco-friendly... Donations, of old but useful mats, are possible to Mayfield Nurseries or https://www.bluecross.org.uk/hampshire-southampton-rehoming-centre

What are you looking for in a yoga mat? Read on for my guidance...

A new student recently asked me how they should chose which yoga mat to buy, and, after dispensing my wisdom, I thought I would write it all down for anyone else that is interested.

You might be surprised to know that I am in no way encouraging you to go out and buy a new mat immediately. In fact, after starting to investigate the environmental credentials of yoga mats, I have made a resolution not to buy another one if I can help it. There is no getting away from the fact that the vast majority of yoga mats are made from new plastic. I don't want, or need, any more of that in my life.

For those of you who are in the market for a new mat you should consider your needs for cushioning, grip, and weight. So, if that is you, or you are just interested, read on...

I spent this weekend brushing up on my Reformer knowledge with JPilates. We focused on all the progressive exercises, I can't wait to share them with my Reformer people. My back is definitely feeling all the hard work and what a mess behind the camera!

This is one of my favourite thread the needle exercises. Using a ball means I get a nice smooth rotation in the upper body allowing me to stretch out the top of my shoulders. You have to work hard to keep your hips still, but this is also the benefit of doing this version because you get the disassociation between your hips and your ribs. My other favourite version you can just focus on the stretch, I'll share that one another time!

26/09/2020

24

Using a small ball to support your back means you've not got as far to go over in your roll over, and that extra 7 inches really makes it easier when you're starting to add in roll overs to your exercises. If your instructor has added these in to your class why not practice them with a small ball, and you can also do this with a foam roller. Roll overs always starts by pulling your belly button towards your spine and up into your rib cage

25/09/2020

23

Double knee fold is another great stability exercise, the small ball really challenges your balance and it means your deep abdominals have to work extra hard to keep you still. If you can't keep still you can do this with one leg at a time. If it's easy, you can try to rely on your arms and hands less by just resting your elbows on the ground. Another great exercise to try at home!

24/09/2020

22

Leg slides with a small ball are amazing, they let your foot slide effortlessly along the floor so you can really focus on making sure your hips are stable and not worry about losing your sock with the friction of the floor. It's great for hip stability and finding those deep abdominal muscles. If you have a small ball at home why don't you give it a go!

Timeline photos 21/09/2020

The small ball is a great way to enhance your Pilates workout. It tones your abs and inner thighs as well as increasing your strength, endurance and concentration. You can use it partially inflated, where it's great underneath your hips for stability exercises and for relaxing your head on for some lovely mobility work.

I'm going to share with you my favourite exercises with a small ball this week!

What is your favourite exercise? Let us know in the comments!

We're still running our ballet classes online. If you've always wanted to try ballet and are worried about starting later, or you've been looking for an open ballet class for adults we've got a class for you. Ballet has so many wonderful benefits, but my favourite is how it can make you forget a stressful day, There's something about the concentration needed to perform movements, the music and the people.

If you have any questions or would like to join, please email our teacher [email protected].

Please share with anyone who might be interested!

Timeline photos 16/09/2020

We're still teaching our barre classes online. We get a lot of work done in our 45 minute classes. I've recently been loving incorporating arms exercises after each section on the barre! This helps build all of those postural muscles that help counter act the hours sitting at our desks and on the sofa. Not to mention all of the standing leg work, perfect for strengthening knees, feet and glutes!

We've got spaces on our Monday 6:30 pm and Thursday 6:00 pm classes.

Please share with anyone who might be interested!

Flexibility is so important to maintain, here's a quote from Joe you may have heard before. A lot of the time in class we're articulating through our spine or adding rotation. When we're on the mat, my first mission is to warm up your spine. I love starting class with a spine curl/bridge or roll up.

Functionally we need our flexibility, we use our spine's flexibility daily whether we're picking things up from the floor, reaching for something on a shelf, sitting down, or putting on our socks.

Are you interested in starting a Pilates class? We've got spaces online and very limited spaces at our studio. If this is of interest to anyone you know please share this with them.

Timeline photos 14/09/2020

When most people think about flexibility they think of a gymnasts and circus performers performing seemingly impossible positions like the splits or an extreme backbend. However, we use our flexibility daily whether you are doing laundry, getting into a car, putting on our seat belt on, tying our shoelaces or reaching for something on a shelf.

We can take it for granted, and as the body ages we can loses some of its flexibility. Injury and non-use of the body can bring premature inflexibility. Movement and stretching will help keep you flexible and mobile. One of the easiest ways to stay flexible, or get some flexibility back is to do Pilates!

Are you interested in starting a Pilates class? We've got spaces online and very limited spaces at our studio. If this is suitable for anyone you know please share this with them.
