The evening Gi workshop explored different knee cut options before moving on to wristlocks from everywhere!

Saturday morning kids striking.

Back to the fundamentals with the jab and cross, focusing on keeping the punches straight and using the jab to set up the cross.

The more experienced kids then added feints and level changes to give their combinations a few more options.

Thursday’s MMA and sparring.

We revisited everything we’ve been working on over the past few weeks, this time turning the drills into competitive challenges to see how well everyone could make them work against resistance.

There’s no losing in the gym.

Getting tapped during training really doesn’t matter. In fact, if you’re never getting caught, it might be worth asking yourself why. Progress doesn’t come from comfort zones.

Training is where you get to experiment, make mistakes and figure things out. Try techniques you’re not particularly good at, put yourself in difficult positions and let things go wrong occasionally. You might get swept, passed or submitted. Who cares? Tap, reset, work out what happened and have another go.

And while we’re on the subject, if you’re keeping count of how many people you tap during normal training, you’re being a bit of a jerk. Nobody cares. You haven’t won anything. Your teammates aren’t opponents you need to keep score against.

That doesn’t mean submissions are meaningless. Getting caught helps you recognise mistakes, while catching someone can show that your understanding of positions, control and submissions is improving. And sometimes progress is simply escaping a position you normally struggle with or getting something new to work against resistance.

There’s absolutely a time to play your strongest game and try to win every exchange, especially when preparing for competition. But if that’s all you ever do, you’re limiting how much the rest of your game can develop.

So take some risks, work on your weaknesses and give your teammates the opportunity to do the same. The people you train with are there to help you improve, just as you’re there to help them.

Don’t let your ego limit your potential. If you’re never willing to fail, you’re limiting how much you can learn.

Save the winning and losing for competition.
