The official page for Southampton University Hillwalking Club (SUHC): the student club exploring the best peaks, countryside, and coastline the UK (and beyond!) has to offer! SUHC hosts regular events during term time, run by our fantastic committee (http://walking.susu.org/committee.php)

Every Saturday - Day Walk in the local area - Info in weekly email and Facebook posts. Just turn up, no need to pay membership, only cost is a train ticket. We meet on the platform at (normally) Southampton Central. The details of the walk and meeting place are circulated the week before here on the page and through email. Away Trips: 6 per year / 2 per term, weekend trips to the most beautiful parts of Britain (including Snowdonia, Lake District, Cornwall, Brecon Beacons, Peak District..) Cost is around £50 each and includes ALL transport, accommodation and food, so great value! (Some of the longer trips may be more expensive)
Note that club membership is required for all Away Trips (£20 for year/ £10 per semester). Sign up is about 2 weeks before the trip, the details are circulated via facebook and email. Socials: Regular and varied (film nights, pubs, wine and cheeses, pudding parties..!). Just turn up! Cost depends on nature of activity. Membership costs £20 and allows attendance of Away Trips as well as members-only socials (or members discounts). Having membership is not necessary if you just want to go on Day Walks, but it is great value if attending lots of walks and socials! Dear Hillwalkers,

On Thursday 8th October we will be heading to Hollywood Bowl! This is below the Showcase and close to WestQuay in the city centre and can be accessed via the Unilink or Bluestar bus services.

For current Students, this social will cost around £13. For Alumni, the cost is around £14. Exact pricing will be confirmed when the payment link is sent out.

We will aim to book for around 6:30-7pm. Depending on numbers, this may be adjusted. We will let everyone know once sign up has closed.
We will be playing 2 games, and will be booking together as a group. Please register your interest using the google form (link found below) by Monday 5th @ 9pm so we know numbers.

On Monday, a payment link will be sent to you to pay so your place can be confirmed. Payment must be made by Wednesday 7th @ 9pm, or else we unfortunately cannot accommodate you. Please also make sure to bring a form of student ID.

Drinks and snacks are available at the bar at the venue.

Dear Hillwalkers,

Join us this Thursday for a night of drinking at Barbara's Bier Haus Southampton ! We have a booking starting at 7:30pm. Barbara’s also has a good range of non-alcoholic drinks for those who don’t drink!

Thursday night is Student Night at Barbara’s, so expect it to be busy! There will be a DJ playing all night. We’ll let everyone know where our tables are on the night.

You can get to Barbara’s by taking a U1A, U2C, or Bluestar 2 to Giddy Bridge. It’s only a 5 minute walk from there! For those who have been in Southampton a while, it’s where Revolution used to be!

Dear Hillwalkers,

We are beyond delighted to invite you to our first spoons breakfast of the year! This is a chance for all to recuperate after Saturday’s walk and for freshers to get to know the club in a more relaxed environment.

We will be heading to The Giddy Bridge spoons on London Road, a short walk from the city centre, accessible via the U1C and U2C, at 10:30am.

Hey Hillwalkers!

Following this weekend's walk, our final day walk of the 2025/26 academic year will be upon us, the 12th iteration of the Jurassic Coast walk! Starting and ending at Lulworth, there will be ample opportunity to go swimming (depending on the weather) at Lulworth cove after the walk has finished.

There will be 564 metres of hills (woah!) over a 14.5km route, exploring the mind-boggling coastal terrain around Lulworth Cove. You’ll see the enchanting Durdle Door, Stair Hole, and much, much more! Once we finish the walk, there’ll be plenty of time left to enjoy the beach, have some lovely food & - depending on the weather - go swimming at the cove.

If that sounds like your idea of fun and you are free on the 6th June, then the sign-up form opens on Wednesday 27th of May at 20:00 on our website, closing on Monday the 1st of June. This walk will use first-come first-served, so you better be quick to secure your spot!

Due to having 2 Minibuses & 2 Car drivers for this trip, we can only offer a limited number of spaces, so make sure you sign up fast.

TRAVEL DETAILS:
We are NOT using the train to get to Lulworth - instead, we’ll be travelling to Lulworth Cove in two SUSU minibuses and two cars (driven by SUHC car and minibus drivers), hence the need for a sign-up form.

The trip will cost £8 per person (drivers are exempt). Once you receive an email confirming your place, keep an eye out for the payment link (as with the BBQ), and make sure you pay by the deadline to secure your place!

We’ll be leaving Highfield Campus at 8:30am LATEST on the Saturday morning. To ensure we can leave on time, please meet us at the Minibus parking behind Building 44 (end of campus, near B46), Highfield Campus at 08:00 to allow for organising people into cars & minibuses.

KIT LIST:
Packed lunch - do not rely on buying lunch on the walk!
Walking boots or sturdy footwear
At least 1.5 litres of water - that’s TWO good-sized water bottles!
Weather permitting: Sunhat and sun cream, and/or waterproofs
Swimming gear and towel if you want to go in the sea
Spare pair of socks

Dear Hillwalkers,

With the sun finally making an appearance, it’s time for our annual Summer BBQ! Join us on Sunday the 31st of May for a great afternoon in Southampton Common.

To be served food, you will need to complete the sign-up form and pay a £3.50 contribution. Payment details will be emailed to you upon completing the form. As ever, anyone is welcome to come, so if you’d rather not have the food, still pop along!

Dear Hillwalkers,

Welcome back from Easter break! We’re pleased to invite you to a pub crawl to kick start the Summer Term. We will be meeting in Stags at 20:00, stopping off at a selection of pubs in Portswood and Bevois Valley, including Mitre, Hobbit and Shooting Star. Finally, we’ll be heading to Indie Night at Jesters!

If at any point during the night you become separated from the group, pop a message on the club's WhatsApp or Discord (links in bio). Remember to bring both your regular and student ID’s!

Tickets to Indie Night can be bought on Fatsoma for £5.

As ever, don’t worry if drinking is not your thing - still pop along to have some fun!

Hello to all Hillwalkers!

After the challenging walk through New Forest, where we crossed rivers, streams and puddles of every size, let’s hope for a sunnier Saturday this time! This weekend we strike back with a Valentine’s edition walk in the fields of the Hart of Hampshire!

This walk will take us further north to the opposite corner of Hampshire! We are going to visit the forest of Eversley, the beautiful Whitewater River and the old Castle of Odiham, a fortress built in 1204 by King John. The route is circular and is going to be a little over 21km. Take all your beloved ones and come join this scenic Saturday hike!

TRAVEL DETAILS
You’ll need an Off-Peak Day Return from Southampton Central to Hook, costing £14.50 with a 16-25 railcard and £21.80 without.
We’re getting the 9:15 CrossCountry train from Central, taking only three quarters of an hour to arrive at Hook (short change in Basingstoke at 9:54)!

Greetings Hillwalkers!

Funny how Rowlands Castle has become the walk I (Sacha) always seem to miss…

Anyway, assuming that I’m not going to catch another cold, this week we’re off to Salisbury, walking a 20km route that starts at Dean. This route has forest galore, pretty villages and the remains of an old stately home, with Salisbury’s iconic cathedral standing proud above the soft, rolling hills.

TRAVEL DETAILS
You’ll need an Off-Peak Day Return from Southampton Central to Salisbury, costing £9.30 with a 16-25 railcard and £14.00 without.

We’re getting the 9:37 SWR train from Central, with arrival at Dean at 10:02.

Greetings Hillwalkers!

This week, we’re going deeper into the South Downs - to a club classic I’ve yet to experience! Starting at Rowland’s Castle, we’ll pitter-patter along an 18km route to Petersfield. It’s another hilly one, but the extraordinary views from Queen Elizabeth Country Park might just make up for this! I could rather do with walking off some more exam stresses…

TRAVEL DETAILS
You’ll need an Anytime Day Return from Southampton Central to Petersfield, costing £16.25 with a 16-25 railcard and £24.40 without.

We’re getting the 8:50 Southern train from Central, changing at Havant to arrive at Rowland’s Castle at 9:58.
