In 2024 it will be the 100th. anniversary of the formation of the club. I would like to celebrate this by compiling a history of the club over those years. My 48 years at Bassett gives me a head start on everybody currently members but there are many gaps, many stories anecdotes that make our club what it is. I am setting myself 4 years to dig and delve for such memories as well as documents, photographs and personal accounts. I do hope you can contribute or offer help and/or advice regarding my task.

Update from Scott Lloyd on the latest coronavirus restrictions in England

We are sure that you will all be aware of the lockdown that comes into force on Thursday. The LTA CEO Scott Lloyd has issued a statement (see link below) to the effect that the LTA believes singles tennis presents a low risk. They are lobbying the government to this effect with aim of getting a decision ahead of the Government vote scheduled for Wednesday.

On this basis the committee has decided it is best to wait to see what the LTA is able to achieve ahead of making any decisions. We plan to meet on Wednesday evening and hope to be able to bring good news at that time.

Cross your fingers everyone and let's hope we can all still play some tennis over the next few weeks.

Many thanks,

Bassett Committee

lta.org.uk LTA CEO Scott Lloyd provides an update on the latest coronavirus restrictions in England, and how you can help

[08/30/20]   A quick update on the state of play with regards the opening of the courts.

We are a little behind at this stage with contractors needing to work all day Monday and possibly some of Tuesday as well. They have said they will be able to hand over the courts to us on Tuesday ahead of the mix in that evening. There is still limited space available to join in the mix in. Please refer to the last club email for details of how to register your place.

Sorry for the delay. The wet weather in the last week has put the program back more than anticipated.

[07/19/20]   Updated Reminder: courts will be closed as follows for resurfacing and work on the floodlights. We will let you know if there is any change to this schedule.

27th July - 31st July - CLOSED
1st & 2nd August - open
3rd - 30th August - CLOSED

Courts will now be close for four weeks in August as more work is required than first thought.

[07/06/20]   Anyone tried the Wimbledon wheelie bin challenge yet? From 25ft, how many tennis balls can you hit into an open wheelie bin in 30s? Feel free to post your videos below!

[06/18/20]   Please remember that If you are the last booking of the day, please make sure the court 1 gate is properly locked to avoid non-members using the courts out of hours.

The courts opening hours remain as usual, 9am to 10pm on Sundays, and 8am to 10pm Monday to Saturday. Please do not use the courts outside these times.

Thank you for your cooperation.

[06/07/20]   Thank you all for adhering to the new ways of playing. One request: if you are unable to use a court booking you have made, please cancel it. This will then allow another member to book and play, especially as we have reduced court capacity. Thank you.

[05/15/20]   If you are a member, you should have received a couple of emails with details of the return to play and membership fees. Please let us know if you are a member, have paid your fees and haven't received these emails. Thanks.

Strict new curbs on life in UK announced by PM

As you are most likely aware there has been an announcement from the UK government that the country is in a state of lockdown (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-52012432). The recommendations are that outdoor sports facilities are to close to prevent social gatherings and non essential contact.

Bassett Lawn Tennis Club is therefore complying with these conditions and will be closed to all members until the government relaxes these rules. We apologise for the situation but we hope that you are able to support the club in our decision to close.

Bassett Lawn Tennis Club

bbc.com Gatherings of more than two people are banned, shops ordered to close and social events stopped as part of rules to keep Britons at home and stop the spread of the coronavirus.

[03/22/20]   Further to the most recent advice from the Lawn Tennis Association we have regretfully had to take further measures to limit the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic.

All group sessions both coached and mix-in have been cancelled until further notice.

The clubhouse including toilets and changing rooms will be closed.

The courts will remain open for members and we would recommend that singles play is preferred to limit accidental contact.

Members should bring their own balls, hand sanitisers etc. to minimise any cross contamination.

David and Jack will be available for individual coaching sessions.

Please ensure that you comply with all the necessary Government Guidelines on social distancing, hygiene and isolation etc. whilst playing at the club.

Bassett was formed by a group of friends in 1924 and still continues on a non profit basis as a members club to facilitate and promote not just tennis but social interaction and friendship and I would ask all members for their continued support at this difficult time.

We are monitoring the LTA and Government advice and will review and update you as soon as the situation changes.

Guidance on social distancing for everyone in the UK and protecting older people and vulnerable adults

Following the further social distancing guidance announced by the government this week, the committee would like to make some recommendations with regards to use of the courts and clubhouse during this time.

It is extremely important that you take the risk to your fellow members seriously and consider that they or their family members may be at higher risk for severe illness than yourself.

Please note that we are aware several members of the club are already in self-isolation with suspected co-vid19. If you have any suspicion that you are experiencing symptoms please DO NOT come to the club.

The club remains open for members however if you wish to continue to use the facilities we highly recommend the following to ensure safety of all members:

• Enter the courts directly and avoid the clubhouse unless absolutely necessary.
• If you wish to enter the clubhouse to ensure hygiene DO NOT do this in groups, remember to stay at least 2 metres away from others at all times
• Take extreme care with hand washing and hygiene before and after being at the club, bring your own hand sanitizer (if you have some!) and use it regularly whilst playing.
• Consider bringing your own balls to play with to avoid cross contamination
• Limit gatherings, the advice is to stay at least 2 metres away from others so consider that if you wish to play tennis that singles may be the best option.
