Some great J70 sailing this weekend by some of our committee members! Here’s what our yachting captain Ellie had to say about the day:

This was our first time back on the water as a university team since the lockdown ended, and it couldn’t have been better, the sun was shining and there was about 15 knots of wind. We sailed out towards the racecourse and started race 1. We had a few troubles with twisted kites for both downwind legs but eventually managed to untwist it. We had a really good start for race 2 which meant we were racing in the fleet properly and the downwind leg was pretty fun (after the small twist) and fast!
The last 3 races we were getting better as there were no hiccups. We improved our roles on the boat as each race went by and manoeuvers were getting quicker towards the final races. We came away overall with 13, 12, 13, 11 and 12. This event is good way to get into keelboating and experience it with other universities and youth teams alongside you. Our team was extremely new to J70 sailing, our helm Chris and Amelia hadn’t sailed a J70 before and myself, and Niamh was our second time and we were all very pleased with how the event was run! This type of event suited our university sailing club because it is well priced for the charter and affordable for a days racing with a good number of races back to back, which allow room to improve on each time. It is a good steppingstone for those who want to progress from dinghies into keelboating, and those who want to gain experience and have fun. The staff were also helpful which we appreciated as a new team! We will definitely be entering future events as this was very much enjoyed by our team!

Please give this post a watch and a thumbs up if you’re gonna join us for Summer Sail Week next summer!⛵️🏖

Team Captains:

White - Elodie Grenen

At the beginning of the month, Solent sailors adventures to fleet nationals down in Plymouth. After around 7 hours of travel the sailors and boats made it in one piece.
The winds were strong and unkind making the Saturday impossible to sail; but with luck they dropped for the following day.
James Loosemore was first to launch in the Hansa, he led an excellent sail right before injuring himself causing him to have to come off the water. But a victory was still won as he thanked everyone for his help and experience which has given him a massive confidence boost to be back on the water again soon.
With the winds still on the strong side, Ollie Goodhead and Thomas Payne flew in the fireball having a blast of a time. In between all the races you could see a smile on their faces from the joy of sending that boat. In the firefly fleet we had Matyas Macat sailing with Juliette Letort and Peter Dill sailing with Megan Smith (first time in a firefly). Matyas and Juliette went every which way the boat could go including a full inversion, turtling the boat. But this still left them smiling. Peter and Megan decided the only way they wanted to go was forwards, and forwards they went receiving an overall 10th place in the firefly fleet!
In the fast fleet Chay Taylor took a brave step into his Rs200 to sail with Ellie Gillespie; who to his surprise sailed fantastically and has even said he will always invite her back into his boat for another sail after such a fab sail together where they even cane 1st in a race!
Into the slow fleet there was Robert Kerley sailing with Jess Harman in the 2000, they received 4th place overall earning BUCS points for the uni, proving Solent are always in the running. Jess Harman (Vice dinghy Captain) worked super hard as the strong winds made it a challenge to get the boat flat. With their boat missing the first start line and a spinnaker disaster, Jess was so pleased at how she could claw her way back to success and for her hard work and dedication to get fleets together has paid off.
Also in the slow fleet was Lauren Bowdler and Emily Michell sailing in the enterprise. With roles reserved with Lauren helm when normally crewing and Emily Crewing while normally helming, the both had a blast. It was Emily’s first time in and enterprise; I mean “what even is a job pole?”, but this didn’t stop the pairing from working as a team (with a few elbows in the face later) to come 5th place and 2nd female pairing.
All of Solent can been seen representing in their fleet national jumpers and many pictures of their great sail below!

First event win of the season, the Solent yachting team won the Royal Southern Academy Trophy over the weekend
