Some great J70 sailing this weekend by some of our committee members! Here’s what our yachting captain Ellie had to say about the day:
This was our first time back on the water as a university team since the lockdown ended, and it couldn’t have been better, the sun was shining and there was about 15 knots of wind. We sailed out towards the racecourse and started race 1. We had a few troubles with twisted kites for both downwind legs but eventually managed to untwist it. We had a really good start for race 2 which meant we were racing in the fleet properly and the downwind leg was pretty fun (after the small twist) and fast!
The last 3 races we were getting better as there were no hiccups. We improved our roles on the boat as each race went by and manoeuvers were getting quicker towards the final races. We came away overall with 13, 12, 13, 11 and 12. This event is good way to get into keelboating and experience it with other universities and youth teams alongside you. Our team was extremely new to J70 sailing, our helm Chris and Amelia hadn’t sailed a J70 before and myself, and Niamh was our second time and we were all very pleased with how the event was run! This type of event suited our university sailing club because it is well priced for the charter and affordable for a days racing with a good number of races back to back, which allow room to improve on each time. It is a good steppingstone for those who want to progress from dinghies into keelboating, and those who want to gain experience and have fun. The staff were also helpful which we appreciated as a new team! We will definitely be entering future events as this was very much enjoyed by our team!
