“You don’t learn to swim by reading about water.”
Same goes for self-defence and personal safety.
Reading, watching, even talking about it. None of it means much until you’ve actually done it under pressure.
Real self-defence is messy, unpredictable, and fast.
It’s about reactions, not rehearsals.
And it starts long before anything physical, with awareness, positioning, and reading the situation early.
When I teach self-defence, I always say: “It doesn’t have to look good, it just has to work.”
Because when the s**t hits the fan, clean, elaborate techniques go out the window.
What matters is whether you’re switched on, able to move, and willing to act.
Situational awareness gives you the head start.
Pressure tested training focused on gross motor skills gives you the tools.
But experience is what teaches you how to pull it all together when it counts.

The unknown always brings a degree of uncertainty.
That’s just life, we can’t predict everything. But when it comes to personal safety, being proactive makes a huge difference. A little awareness, a bit of planning, and trusting your gut can help you avoid trouble before it starts.
It’s not about living in fear, it’s about moving through the world with confidence.

Situational Awareness – Stay ahead of the threat.
Situational awareness isn’t just a skill, it’s a mindset. It means understanding what’s happening around you, knowing your environment, anticipating movement, and spotting danger before it becomes a problem.
This is the foundation of personal safety and self-defence.
Everything starts here. Train it. Live it. Make it second nature.

TRUST YOUR GUT.
You are not being paranoid - you’re being primed. Your body has a built-in alarm system, honed through millions of years of survival. It can sense danger before your conscious mind has time to process it.
That tightness in your stomach… the hairs standing up on the back of your neck… the sudden shift in your breathing or heart rate, these are not random. They are early warning signals. Your subconscious picks up on subtle cues: body language, tone, energy, even changes in the environment, long before your rational brain catches up.
Don’t dismiss it.
If something feels off, it usually is.
Your survival instinct is ancient, accurate, and it exists to protect you.
Listen to your body. Trust the signal. Act decisively.

Real personal safety isn’t about being the toughest person in the room.
It’s about trusting your gut, spotting trouble early, understanding your natural instincts, and knowing what to do if things go sideways.
We don’t need to live in fear, but we do need to be ready.
Confidence comes from preparation, not paranoia.
Awareness, not distraction.
Action, not hesitation.

Back in my happy place – four days on the range testing out a line-up of quality 9mm pistols.
As someone who owns both a G***k 17 and a Smith & Wesson M&P (the M&P usually being my go-to), I’d been hearing a lot of buzz about the Canik – so I thought it was time to give it a run.
After the first 100 rounds, one clear favourite stood out: the Canik TTI Combat, paired with a Holosun green dot sight. Smooth, accurate, and seriously impressive – it definitely lives up to the hype.
Huge respect to , , and – solid kit across the board.

So apparently it is a tradition in the Charente region of France to plant a lime tree (or linden tree, known as tilleul in French) in your garden.
In France the lime tree has long been associated with peace, justice, and community.
Thank you to Jason & Tim for the moving in gift of lime 🙏🏻

GUTHRIE’S LAW:
When it comes to self-defence, less really can be more. Guthrie’s Law, developed by psychologist Edwin Ray Guthrie back in the 1940s, is based on his research into learning and behaviour. Guthrie found that the most effective actions are the ones that are simple, direct, and instinctive, perfect for self-defence.
His three core principles - Maximum Certainty, Minimum Effort, and Minimum Time - are all about keeping things straightforward when you need them most.
🔸Maximum certainty means focusing on techniques you can rely on, even under pressure.
🔸Minimum effort? That’s about saving your energy and making each move count.
🔸Minimum time is key, because in real situations, every second matters.
By understanding and implementing these basics into your training, you’re able to act quickly and confidently without getting lost in complicated steps.
We’ve all seen those social media posts of flashy, over-elaborate “look at me” techniques, but REAL FUNCTIONAL SELF-DEFENCE isn’t about fancy, technical moves; it’s about awareness, staying safe, and using direct, gross motor skill-based techniques to get out of harm’s way and escape.
It doesn’t have to look pretty - It just has to work!
I dig deeper into Guthrie’s work and how it applies to self-defence in my book, Navigating the Modern Jungle, now available on Amazon. If you’re serious about your and your family’s personal safety , it’s well worth a read!

🛡️ Beyond the Knife: Why Are Blunt Force Weapons Overlooked By So Many Self-Defence Instructors?🛡️
We hear so much about knife crime in the UK, but what about everyday objects that can be just as dangerous? Hammers, bats, even a wheel brace. I was once attacked by a man with a wheel brace outside a bar in East London. Luckily, I reacted quickly and was unharmed, but it reinforced how crucial it is to be situationally aware and ready to react to any threat.
🔸 Blunt force trauma accounts for 20% of domestic homicides in the UK, yet most self-defence training overlooks it.
🔸 Why? - Knife attacks make the headlines, but assaults with blunt weapons, often in domestic violence or random attacks, don’t get the same attention. Many training programmes don’t prepare you for these kinds of threats.
🔸 Key defence tip: - Always check the attacker’s hands, can you see their palms?, Make space, get away if possible, protect vulnerable parts of your body like the head, joints etc, try to manage the weight and momentum of the weapon, if you have to defend yourself then be 100% committed in your defence.
Self-defence is more than just knives, it’s about being ready for anything. Stay aware and keep your training realistic.
stay safe.
