🀿 Southport BSAC – Doing Our Bit at the NW Dive Fest! 🀿
If you wondered why it was a bit quiet around Southport BSAC last Friday, it’s because half the club seemed to be working at the NW BSAC Dive Fest at Capernwray! πŸ˜‚
Southport members were right in the thick of things and helped make sure the day ran smoothly.
🎟️ Martyn, Diana, Trefor and Jennifer spent the day selling raffle tickets, answering questions and generally pointing people in the right direction.
πŸ΄β€β˜ οΈ Sophie Fielding was given the possibly unenviable task of running the Junior Explorer Treasure Hunt – organising, encouraging and occasionally cajoling youngsters around the various challenges!
🀿 Mark Lamb hardly surfaced all day, running the very popular Sidemount Try Dives. Keith Shotton never stopped taking divers for Try rebreather dives.
β›Ί Steve Bellion and Phil discovered that diving clubs don't just need divers – they also need people who can put gazebos up... and, more importantly, get them back down again at the end of a long day!
And as NW Regional Coach, I spent the day doing what regional coaches apparently do best – running around Capernwray, changing jobs every five minutes and trying to look like I knew exactly what was going on! πŸ˜‚
It was a long and very busy day, but having so many Southport members mucking in made a huge difference.
πŸ‘ A massive thank you to everyone from the club who helped out.
Events like the Dive Fest don't happen without volunteers willing to roll their sleeves up, get involved and occasionally wonder why they volunteered in the first place!
Great teamwork from Southport BSAC – and a cracking day at Capernwray. πŸ€ΏπŸ‘

Yesterday, two Southport BSAC instructors were helping out on BSAC North West Regional courses at Capernwray Dive Site.
Mark Lamb was running a Sidemount course, teaching divers how to use an alternative cylinder configuration that offers greater flexibility and comfort in the water.
Stephen Dorricott was delivering a PIE Prep course, taking students through the various open water lessons and helping them prepare for their Practical Instructor Examination (PIE).
It's always great to see Southport BSAC instructors supporting regional training and helping develop the next generation of divers and instructors. πŸ‘πŸŒŠπŸ€Ώ

🚀 RIB DAY OUT – NO DIVING, JUST GREAT FUN! 🌊
One of the huge benefits of being a member of Southport Sub Aqua Club is having access to our fantastic 6m Tornado RIB, powered by a 150hp Evinrude engine and capable of a cruising speed of around 25 knots.
Today, we took Southport Diver out for a run to give her a test. Launching from Knott End, we headed down the River Wyre and out to Lune Deep, an incredible underwater channel where the seabed dramatically drops from around 10 metres to 45 metres.
From there, we cruised across to Piel Island, near Barrow, stopping for lunch at The Ship Inn. A fun fact for those who don't know – landlord Aaron is also the King of Piel Island! πŸ‘‘πŸΊ
The round trip covered approximately 30 miles. No diving today – just fresh sea air, good friends, plenty of laughs, and a reminder that diving clubs offer so much more than just diving.
Days like these are what club life is all about! 😊

Also huge congratulations to Steve B who was elected as our new President, let’s hope he does a better job than DT in the US 🀣
Thanks as always to Martyn and Diana for hosting us in their lovely home.

How many divers does it take to erect a banner? A team of three, under close supervision, were spotted erecting the new club banner outside of Dunes Leisure Centre at our club night on Wednesday. Some have been referred for a health and safety update following the near miss with the sliders 😁

Our recent AGM was well attended with a packed agenda. Following the business section we gave awards to our Diver of the Year to Tom, the Pete Markham award for perseverance in the face of adversity to Steve Y and the Member of the Year to Steve B, a long-standing hard working member, which was well deserved! A somewhat dubious honour for the longest dive went to Adrian 😁🀿.

We also had a photo competition which was won by Steve I (the club is full of Steves by the way), a great shot recently taken in the Maldives.

Lastly, in the midst of a chip butty eating frenzy, we held a raffle that raised over Β£100 for the Southport Lifeboat which is a local cause close to our hearts as divers.
Overall a good night was had by all with the added benefit of electing some new Committee members who are ready to continue the good work started by the outgoing members.
