Southport 2–2 Maghull Yellow

Southport pinned back at the death – again.

Southport matched up against Maghull Yellow this morning, hungry for a bit of revenge after a loss and a draw in the last two meetings. Both of those games saw late goals conceded. Surely it couldn’t happen again… could it?

A flying start

The girls came out brilliantly, playing confident, connected football and deservedly taking an early lead.
On just 3 minutes, Grace threaded a superb through ball to Sophie. Her first effort was saved, but she reacted quickest to the rebound and tucked it into the empty net.
1–0

The rest of the half ebbed and flowed, with both sides creating chances. Southport carved out the better openings, but the Maghull keeper was in inspired form as always.

1–0 at halftime

A tight second half battle

The second half was a proper contest between two strong teams. Paige and Phoebe both went close, and Rosa was unlucky not to score from a well‑struck free kick.

Maghull hit back when a cross found an unmarked player at the back post for a simple finish.
1–1

Southport pushed again, showing real belief and bravery on the ball. With eight minutes left, Phoebe unleashed a powerful effort that the Maghull keeper couldn’t hold, and Sophie reacted brilliantly to fire home her second of the game.
2–1

It looked like the girls had done enough to take all three points… but football can be cruel. With literally the last action of the match, a Maghull striker got the wrong side of a Southport defender and won a penalty, which was converted past Dakota with the final kick.
2–2

A tough one to swallow – but so much to admire

The result stings, no doubt. But the girls showed huge effort, courage in possession, and some genuinely excellent football throughout. They’re growing, competing, and pushing strong teams right to the edge.

Parents’ Player of the Match – Paige

Another outstanding performance from Paige. She worked tirelessly, read the game superbly, and combined her effort with some really intelligent play. A fully deserved award.

Coach’s Player – Londyn

A top‑class performance from Londyn at left‑back. She’s improving every single week, and today was another big step forward. Her tackling has always been a standout strength, but now she’s adding real confidence on the ball, driving forward with purpose and composure. A brilliant all‑round display from a player growing fast in this team.

Match Report

Southport 2 – 5 Rainford Inter

A tough morning for the girls and one that will feel frustrating given the number of chances created. Football has days like this, and today was simply one of them.

Bright Start, Early Reward

Southport opened the game with confidence, moving the ball well and pinning Rainford into their own half. The pressure paid off on ten minutes when Phoebe slipped a clever pass through to Sophie, who finished calmly to give Southport a deserved lead.
1–0

The goal sparked Rainford into life. Their winger—who was a threat throughout—broke away and levelled the game with a composed finish.

Back in Front

Southport responded brilliantly. Dakota’s long kick beat the Rainford back line and Sophie raced through to score her second of the morning.
2–1

But again Rainford found an answer, with their winger showing quick feet to round Dakota and equalise before the break.
2–2 – Half-time

Second Half Struggles

The second half didn’t reach the standards the girls have set recently. A drop in intensity and a few individual errors allowed Rainford to take control. A mistake in midfield gifted them the chance to go ahead.
2–3

Southport continued to create opportunities, but it was one of those days where the ball just wouldn’t go in—the post, near misses, and last-ditch blocks all keeping Rainford in front.

With five minutes remaining, the girls switched to a very attacking shape in search of an equaliser. The gamble didn’t come off, and Rainford scored twice late on to seal the game.
2–5 – Full-time

Reflection

The girls were understandably disappointed at the final whistle, which says everything about their character and standards. There’s a chance to put things right next week before the Easter break, and this group has shown time and again that they bounce back quickly. Effort was never in question—today was simply one of those days in football.

🌼 Match Report: Southport 3 – 0 Rainford Barca

Spring League Opener – Mother’s Day Special at Meols Park

The girls kicked off the spring league in style, delivering a perfect Mother’s Day treat on a wet, windy, sideways‑rain kind of morning at Meols Park.

Before a ball was kicked, the Southport girls showed real class—forming a guard of honour for Rainford Barca, who had narrowly pipped them to the winter league title by a single point. A brilliant moment of respect and sportsmanship.

🌬️ First Half – Battling the Elements, Controlling the Game

With the wind howling and the rain swirling, the girls knew they’d need to be sharp from the first whistle. And they were.

Southport were strong in their duels, confident on the ball, and quick to combine in tight areas. The pressure paid off when Pheobe was brought down in the box after a driving run. Rosa stepped up and, with ice‑cold composure, slotted the penalty into the bottom corner.

1–0 Southport ⚽️

Both teams created chances as the half went on. Southport struck the post, and both goalkeepers produced excellent saves. The girls’ passing was a joy to watch—slick, brave, and full of intent.

Halftime: 1–0

Second Half – Digging Deep, Pulling Away

Rainford came out strong after the break and had a spell of pressure, but Dakota—currently in outstanding form—kept them at bay with several top‑class saves.

Midway through the half, Southport doubled their lead. Darcy, lively all game, drew a foul with her quick feet. Sophie stepped up from distance and fired a powerful effort goalward. The ball bounced awkwardly in the box and skidded through the keeper’s legs.

2–0 Southport ⚽️

Now buoyant and full of confidence, the girls began to string together some beautiful passing sequences. With ten minutes to go, Darcy got the goal her work rate deserved. She chased down a defender, forced a throw‑in, received the ball back, created a yard of space, and unleashed a stunning strike into the top corner.

A sensational finish.

3–0 Southport ⚽️

The final whistle blew with the mums smiling and the girls celebrating a statement win against the newly crowned winter champions.

⭐ Coaches’ Player of the Week

Phoebe – A tough decision today, but Phoebe delivered her best performance to date. Her work rate was immense, and her intelligent play throughout the match earned her the award.

👏 Parents’ Player of the Week

A unanimous decision: the whole team.
Fully deserved after a brilliant performance and a fantastic start to the new league campaign.

What kids hear from the sidelines can shape their entire experience of football.

Sometimes without meaning to, adults can fill the touchline with:

“Pass it!”
“Shoot!”
“Come on!”
“What are you doing?”

But most young players don’t need constant instructions.

They need encouragement.

They need patience.

And they need to feel supported — especially when things don’t go right.

Because the goal of grassroots football isn’t just development.

It’s helping kids love the game.

⚽ What do you think players need to hear more of from the sidelines?
