Newtongrange Star 3-0 St Andrews United

It was another disappointing afternoon for St Andrews United as the Whites fell to a 3–0 defeat away at Newtongrange Star in East of Scotland Premier Division. Travelling to New Victoria Park, Saints were hoping to put a difficult run of recent results behind them and produce a much-needed positive performance. Unfortunately, despite creating opportunities of their own, Saints were once again left frustrated as the home side proved to be more clinical in front of goal. The opening stages saw the United players look to establish themselves in the contest, and there were certainly chances to make an impact on the scoresheet. Home goalkeeper Liam McCathie was called into action on several occasions throughout the first half, producing three excellent saves to deny the visitors and keep his side in control. However, it was Newtongrange Star who made the breakthrough in the 26th minute. Aidan Barrowman cut inside before firing an effort inside the near post to give the hosts a 1–0 advantage. Things went from bad to worse for Saints just ten minutes later. In the 36th minute, a cross from Mikey Jones found Barrowman, who managed to turn the ball home from an awkward height to grab his second of the afternoon and double Star’s advantage.
It was a particularly frustrating scoreline for United, who had created enough opportunities to feel they deserved something from the opening 45 minutes. However, missed chances at one end and clinical finishing at the other meant that Saints headed into the interval with a mountain to climb. With a two-goal deficit to overturn, the St Andrews United players returned for the second half knowing that the next goal would be crucial if they were to find a way back into the contest. United continued to battle and look for an opening, but the afternoon was proving to be another difficult one. Despite the effort to get back into the game, Saints were unable to find the cutting edge required to turn their opportunities into goals. As the match entered its closing stages, any lingering hopes of a comeback were extinguished in the 81st minute. Mitchell Bentley added a third for Newtongrange Star, finding the bottom corner with a composed finish to put the result beyond doubt and complete a thoroughly disappointing afternoon for the visitors.
