St Andrews United progressed to the next round of the South Challenge Cup with a deserved 2–0 victory over Castlemilk at The Clayton Holiday Park Recreation Ground. After an evenly contested first half, Saints took complete control after the interval, producing some excellent attacking football and creating a number of chances. Two well-taken goals from Ross Kavanagh ultimately secured a convincing win and a place in the next round. The hosts started brightly and created an early opportunity in the 26th minute. Good play down the right opened up space for Kavanagh inside the penalty area, but his effort was well blocked by the Castlemilk defence. From the resulting corner, Jordan Wright rose highest but headed narrowly wide. Castlemilk thought they had taken the lead four minutes later when the ball found the net, but the celebrations were cut short by the offside flag.

Saints continued to search for the breakthrough and came close shortly after the restart. Kavanagh beat his defender and fired towards goal, with his shot partially blocked. The ball almost trickled over the line before a Castlemilk defender recovered in time to clear the danger. The breakthrough finally arrived in the 54th minute. Paul Simpson produced excellent work down the right before delivering a dangerous cross into the box, where 'Kav' was on hand to apply a composed finish and give St Andrews United a deserved 1–0 lead. Saints were now playing with increasing confidence and produced some excellent one-touch football through midfield. On the hour mark, a slick passing move released Kavanagh through on goal, but the Castlemilk goalkeeper produced an excellent save. From the resulting corner, Jason Thomson’s header was also kept out. Castlemilk remained a threat and came close to creating an equaliser in the 65th minute when a ball down the left was followed by a dangerous cross that just failed to find its intended target.

St Andrews continued to dominate possession and create opportunities. Another impressive flowing move in the 70th minute saw Alex McCreadie released before squaring the ball across goal, only for some last-ditch defending to deny Rian Dempsey what looked like a certain tap-in at the back post. The introduction of Ross Cunningham at half-time had added another dimension to Saints’ attacking play, and he was heavily involved again four minutes later. Excellent play created an opening for Cunningham, who cut the ball back to Kavanagh. The striker narrowly missed from close range before seeing his follow-up effort rebound off a defender and brush the post.

Saints eventually got the second goal their performance deserved in the 85th minute. Once again, Simpson was the provider, delivering another quality cross from the right for Kavanagh, who finished confidently to claim his second goal of the afternoon and seal the victory. Overall, it was an excellent result for St Andrews United. The first half was evenly balanced, but the Saints took total control after the break. Ross Kavanagh will rightly take the headlines with two well-taken goals, but there were encouraging performances throughout the side, particularly during periods of excellent one-touch football in the second half. Simpson’s threat from wide areas was also a constant source of danger, with both goals coming from his delivery. A professional performance, two excellent goals, a clean sheet and, most importantly, St Andrews United are into the next round of the South Challenge Cup.

Here are Graham Hutchison's photos from today's 2-1 defeat at home to Preston Athletic. Saints scored in the 18th minute through Ross Kavanagh - his tenth goal in nine matches. However, the visitors hit back with goals from Neilson Combe in the 63rd minute and Ryan Baptie in the 77th minute. At least Hutch was on his A game with the action shots, even if the players weren't!!!!!!!

We're back at home tomorrow in the league with a chance to make amends for Tuesday's result . . . . . . . usual match-day arrangements will be in place!

Sauchie Juniors 2-1 St Andrews United

St Andrews United faced a tricky looking away fixture at Sauchie on a cold autumnal evening without the services of influential captain Jason Thomson. Manager Fraser Duncan also made a change in goal with Sean Robertson replacing Keir Burt between the posts but the opening stages of the contest were fairly dull to watch. The two teams were fairly evenly matched and the bumpy pitch resulted in several long balls bypassing midfield. The first chance of the match came in the seventh minute when Evan Collumbine made a good save from a Jordan Wright header before Scott McNabney tested Robertson with a long-range effort at the other end of the pitch. Alas, the rest of the first half was played in a very cagey fashion and the visitors struggled to create many clear-cut scoring-chances. Lewis Sawers did manage to test Collumbine again in the 24th minute yet the skilful winger looked frustrated at his lack of involvement when he collected a yellow card a few moments later. Regan Lumsden also shot wide from a Paul Simpson cross during a rare attack on the half-hour mark but the hosts took charge of proceedings thereafter. Alas, the away players were out fought and second to every ball as half time approached. Conor Kelly thus took advantage of United's slack play to attempt an audacious over-head kick before Euan Griffiths failed to bother Robertson with a weak shot from twenty yards. The St Andrews United goalkeeper subsequently produced a contender for 'save of the season' with a wonderful reflex stop from a powerful Kelly header yet he was beaten shortly afterwards. The hosts earned three corners in quick succession and the pressure paid dividends when Kyle Cringean stabbed the ball past Robertson from close-range in the 37th minute. That goal certainly gave the Sauchie players a much-needed confidence boost and they moved further ahead following the next attack. David Cross was lucky to escape with a yellow card after handling the ball in the box and Kelly sent the ensuing spot kick low to Robertson's right as the goalie dived the other way.

Aaron Stubberfield then missed an open goal in the first minute of injury time and it would be fair to say that Duncan wasn't a happy man as the players and coaches headed for the changing rooms. Indeed, Duncan sent his boys back to the pitch less than seven minutes later and that ploy seemed to have the desired effect. Sawers was unlucky not to pull a goal back when Collumbine made a good block with his legs and Rian Dempsey almost scored from a tight angle on the hour-mark. However, Dempsey and Penman were replaced by a trialist plus Alex McCreadie as Duncan switched formations in an attempt to gain control of the midfield battle. McCreadie's introduction was key because the little midfielder started passing the ball forward and Saints finally began to play some decent football. Lumsden was inches away from converting a great cross from Sawers then McCreadie pulled a goal back with a shot that entered the net via Collumbine's far post in the 72nd minute. That goal came on the back of United's best move of the game and the tide turned as the hosts began to tire. Tony Gillan also came off the bench with a view to providing energy in the middle of the park and he was involved in the next move that ended with Ross Kavanagh missing a good chance from the edge of Sauchie's box. McCreadie then missed an open goal when it seemed easier to score in the 83rd minute, whilst Collumbine tipped a clever effort from Kavanagh narrowly over his crossbar. The big striker was involved in the heat of the action at that point and he somehow placed a header wide of the target with five minutes remaining. The home players were desperately hanging on to their lead as the clock wound down and it seemed like a matter of time until Saints equalised. As such, Kavanagh found himself in great positions to score on two further occasions during injury time but the ball slipped agonisingly wide of Collumbine's posts both times. The final score thus ended 2-1 in Sauchie's favour, which was a fair result based upon superior work-rate, shape, communication and togetherness displayed by the boys in red. The visitors did show those qualities during the last twenty minutes yet it was a case of too little; too late as Saints slipped to 13th place in the Premier Division table.

Tasty tie coming up in the Scottish!!!!!!! Game to be played on the 12th of September. The Glasgow boy presenting the draw says we have to 'cross the bridge' to get there but I'm not sure if he means the Swilcan Bridge, Guardbridge or the Motray Bridge!!!
