In the latest in the ‘Get to Know the Lass’ series, meet Lisa Miller!
In the summer of 1993, I attended a neighborhood barbecue in Scotia NY (this village named in the1600s by early settler Alexander Lindsey Glen after his beloved homeland, Scotland). A neighbor started talking about the Schenectady Curling Club, the Scottish heritage of the area and about curling. I was intrigued to try it out in the Fall. I did, and I was hooked from that day forward. Early on, I leveraged my training and coaching skills and earned my instructor certifications teaching new curlers, actively chairing events, volunteering, participating in numerous Bonspiels, and serving on the club board. In 2001, my team earned a spot in the National Women’s Qualifier ‘Road to Ogden’ Olympic Playdowns in Utica, NY. This wonderful experience exposed me to the growing competitive awareness of the game. Career moves afforded me the opportunity to be a member of the Utica Curling Club for nearly 10 years in the early 2000’s, until I was relocated back and returned to SCC. Much joy comes from coaching and developing new women curlers and our new skip league is my favorite league,
where I can help teach, coach and build the women’s skill of the game.
Beyond curling on the ice, my interests were sparked for all things ICE, and I earned my Level I Ice certification and an active role on the Ice Committee (traditionally a male-dominated committee) I developed personal friendships with Jet Ice, and coordinated, designed logos and houses, and play a key role in annual ice installation. In 2020 I was honored to be selected as the sole “American” woman on the ice crew from in-ice installation to the event games of the Continental Cup in Ontario, Canada. I was selected again for the Halifax Brier ’25 ice crew.
One consistent unifying theme throughout my many years of curling has been the USWCA. I had the joy of being introduced to the USWCA by
Dorothy Szymaszek and Charlene Fitzgerald (two wonderful women and really good curlers) who invited me to attend my first USWCA National Bonspiel. My love of the organization blossomed under their mentorships. I have served as SCC USWCA club representative for several years, and serve on various USWCA committees that allow me to leverage my leadership and organizational skills. As I retired this year, I know my involvement will continue to grow as I am the Chair for the USWCA Senior Women’s National Bonspiel, “Curling Along the Mohawk” to be held November of 2027 at the Schenectady Curling Club.
I am honored to have been selected for the 2026 Scot Tour. As a tour designated photographer, I am excited to capture ice and tour memories to share and inspire others. I look forward to curling with this amazing group of women, who I know will become friends of a lifetime.
Ice is in. Scotland is calling…. It’s time to play!
