Why is HorseFirst Biomechanics different??
04/08/2026
Well... I wrote a book... just a little one!
After far too many cups of coffee ☕, several notebooks, countless rewrites, and one or two moments of wondering whether I should just become a llama farmer instead...
I've finally finished writing something that's been living in my head for a very long time.
"Welcome to the Conversation"
It's not a training manual, It isn't another "10 exercises to fix your horse." And I promise there isn't a single instruction telling you to squeeze harder with your inside leg. 😉
It's simply an invitation to pause, become curious and perhaps see your horse, and yourself - a little differently.
I've decided to make it completely free because I genuinely believe every HorseFirst journey should begin with understanding, not with a sales page.
So, if you've ever found yourself wondering...
🐴 Why does my horse only do it on the left rein?
🐴 Why does riding suddenly hurt?
🐴 Why does my horse feel completely different with another rider?
🐴 Or... surely it can't just be me?
..then I hope you'll enjoy it.
If nothing else, I hope it encourages you to walk out to your horse tomorrow and ask one better question.
I'd love to know what you think.
You can find it on my website homepage - just scroll down to the bottom .... www.equimotion.co.uk

Could your riding story help another rider?
Over the next few months, I'm beginning one of the most exciting projects I've ever worked on...
The HorseFirst Academy.
To help bring it to life, I'm looking for my first 20 Founding Riders to take part in a series of filmed Rider Reset sessions.
Whether you're working through confidence, asymmetry, stiffness, balance, old injuries, or simply want to understand your riding better, your journey could help another rider realise they're not alone.
And don't worry if you don't like being on camera!
If the thought of being filmed makes you feel a little nervous, please don't let that put you off. There'll be no speaking to camera, no interviews and no pressure. Just come along, enjoy your session and let me quietly capture parts of it as we work together. Most of the time, you'll probably forget the camera is even there.
As a Founding Rider you'll receive:
🐴 A 45-minute HorseFirst Rider Reset session on Jack
🎥 Your session filmed for the future HorseFirst Academy
💬 Personal coaching throughout
✨ The opportunity to help shape something that could support hundreds of riders in the years ahead
📍 Staffordshire
💰 £40 per 45 mins
I'm not looking for perfect riders.
I'm looking for honest stories.
Every horse and every rider have a different conversation, and it's those conversations that will help bring the HorseFirst Academy to life.
Places are intentionally limited because I'm looking for a wide variety of riders and experiences, rather than large numbers.
If you'd love to be involved, send me a message telling me a little about yourself, your horse, and what you'd most like to improve.
I'd love to hear your story.

Absolutely this 👇
🐴 Is your horse really being stubborn... or are they trying to tell you something?
Too often, horses are labeled as lazy, naughty, or difficult when they're actually experiencing pain or discomfort.
A horse that suddenly refuses jumps, won't stand for mounting, pins their ears during grooming, or seems "off" may not have developed a training problem—they may be asking for help.
In my latest blog, I share what I believe is the single best piece of advice I can give every horse owner: learn to listen before your horse has to scream.
You'll learn:
🐎 Why behavior changes are often early signs of pain
🐎 How to recognize subtle clues before they become major problems
🐎 The importance of knowing what's "normal" for your horse
🐎 Why prevention is always better than rehabilitation
🐎 How building the right healthcare team can help your horse thrive
The more we understand our horses, the better we can advocate for their health, comfort, and happiness.
❤️ Your horse is always communicating. The question is... are we listening?

If you'd like to learn even more, enroll in our FREE course, "How to Determine if Your Horse is Experiencing Pain or Lameness." It's designed to help horse owners recognize the subtle signs of discomfort before they become serious problems. Just comment with a picture of your horse and I'll give you the link!
Because every horse deserves someone who knows how to listen. 💙

Have you ever considered that the body you live in, is the same body you ride in.?!
We often separate our riding from the rest of our lives, we spend hours sitting at desks, we carry feed bags, we lift haynets, we muck out, we drive for miles, we protect old injuries, and we adapt to aches and stiffness without even realising it.
Then we climb into the saddle and expect our body to move completely differently.
But it can't.
Because...
The body you live in is the same body you ride in.
Every movement you make throughout the day becomes part of the conversation your horse experiences when you ride. That's why EquiMotion isn't about chasing perfect positions.
It's about helping your body move with greater freedom, confidence and comfort—both in everyday life and in the saddle.
Because when your body begins to feel different...Your horse feels it too.
🧡

Well... getting caught on the leg by a horse wasn't quite the "planned business strategy" for June... 🤦♀️🐴
The good news is I'm finally back on two feet (mostly!), and after a few quieter weeks, EquiMotion is very much alive and kicking... thankfully with a little less enthusiasm than the horse! 😂
In fact, the time away has turned out to be one of those unexpected gifts. It gave me the space to stop, think, and ask myself one question...
**What am I really trying to teach through EquiMotion?**
For years I thought it was "rider biomechanics", then movement, then it became rehabilitation, and more recently, neuroscience. But the more I learn, the more I realise they all lead back to the same place....
The conversation between horse and rider, because really every ride is a conversation. Every movement we make says something to the horse, every response from the horse tells us something. Essentially our bodies are communicating with our horses every second, even when we are quietly hacking along on the buckle end, but this is often in ways we don't even realise.
And perhaps the biggest lesson of all, which is something I am learning more and more from my own horses, particularly the more "troubled" ones...
"The horse never stopped talking, we just forgot how to listen."
That one idea has changed the direction of EquiMotion recently a little, it's shaping the new website, the courses, the sessions, and certainly the way I think about horses.
I can't wait to start sharing it all with you. But before I do...
I'd love to know...
**What's the most valuable thing your horse has ever taught you?** 🧡 ....comment below, I will get us started ...

Who can relate to this??! 😂😂
We may joke about horse riders being a "tough breed" and keeping going through injury etc ....but have you ever wondered how much this impacts your horse, do you even think it does??
Comment below with your experiences ....👇👇👇

I've had a few people ask recently what HorseFirst Biomechanics™ actually is.
It's not something I woke up one morning and decided to create, but looking back, I think I've accidentally been building it for most of my riding life.
I learned to ride on horses that hated being held together - the sort that could feel you move a millimetre, the sort that taught you very quickly that pulling harder wasn't the answer 😅
Then came endurance horses.
Arab racehorses.
Rehab horses.
Therapy work.
More rehab horses.
A few horses that probably needed a therapist more than a trainer!
And somewhere in amongst all that... my own collection of injuries.
The funny thing is that whether I was treating horses, training horses, rehabbing horses or trying to rebuild myself, I kept coming back to the same question:
Why is this horse responding like that? Not what's wrong with it, or how do I stop it. But why?
The answer was very rarely just the horse ....
Sometimes it was pain, sometimes confidence and sometimes understanding. But very often there was a rider in the middle of it all influencing the conversation without even realising. Be it through balance, breathing, timing, tension, fear, compensation etc.
That's really where HorseFirst Biomechanics™ came from.
So what is it?
At its simplest, it's understanding how the rider's body influences the horse, and how the horse responds in return .... and the conversations happening between horse and rider that neither may realise they're having.
Over the coming months I'll be sharing more of the ideas, observations and practical tools that sit behind HorseFirst Biomechanics™ as it continues to evolve. 😊
