We are pleased to announce that we are holding an LTA "She Rallies" event at the club on Sunday 1st May from 1-3pm. Libby Duncan from R2R is organising the event, which aims to attract more women and girls into playing tennis.

Club members of all standards are invited to join this free event, aswell as non-members from the wider community. We have advertised the event in the Stamford & Rutland Mercury, and the Endowed School will include a feature in the School Post.

Please do come along and support the event, and encourage your friends and neighbours to come along and try out tennis - there are no age limits, and rackets will be available for those who don't have their own equipment.

If you want to come along, please book a place with Libby on [email protected]

Opportunity for new committee members

Stamford Tennis Club is run by volunteer members, and we currently have opportunities for three enthusiastic members to join the committee.

We have a large committee of 14 members, which helps us to spread the activities around, without any one role becoming a burden. With such a large committee, we see a rotation of volunteers each year, and currently have the following three roles available:

Club Secretary
Member Communications Officer
Club Captain and Men's representative
If you are interested in finding out about any of the roles above, please feel free to contact any of the committee members.

We meet as a committee only 5-6 times a year - our approach is to take the least time possible in meetings, leaving the most time possible for playing tennis!

Covid 19 Guidance Update

Dear Members,

Following the government announcement this week around the implementation of "Plan B" measures, we have reviewed our situation as a club, and thought that you would appreciate a quick update.

As we are all aware, tennis is a naturally socially distanced sport, and all forms of tennis remain open - including group coaching, group social tennis and competitive play.

The clubhouse remains open for general use, although we encourage you to minimise the time you spend in the clubhouse. We will maintain the twice weekly cleaning regime, but that still does not make it a COVID secure location, so we ask that a maximum of 5 people are in the clubhouse at any one time.

We are conscious that people will have different views on the ongoing level of risk, and we ask that you respect the views and preferences of your fellow members, some of whom will still be concerned about potential infection.

It remains mandatory to book all courts, this is now a permanent rule of the club.

If you plan on going to indoor courts at other regional clubs, remember that they will expect you to wear masks in communal areas.

If you have any questions, please do get in touch.

Mark Anderson
Chair

New Club Captain appointed

Kevin Tassell and Neil Chedd have stepped down from their roles as Club Captain and Match Secretary. We would like to thank them both for their contribution to the club over many years.

We have now replaced these roles with two Club Captain roles - one responsible for our teams in the Peterborough and District League (PADL) and to represent the men across both leagues; the other responsible for our teams in the Hunts and Peterborough League (HPL) and to represent the ladies at the club.

We are delighted to announce that Karen Tattersall has volunteered to take on the HPL role and represent the ladies at STC. Karen has previous committee experience and is a member of the Ladies Team, and will be a great asset to the club.

This leaves open a position on the committee for a Club Captain to represent us in the PADL league, and the men in the leagues. We cannot enter teams into the leagues without volunteers to take on these roles so please contact any member of the committee if you are willing to help.

STC Juniors success at Racketlon tournament

Stamford School hosted a Racketlon tournament last Sunday, with around 50 racket sports enthusiasts arriving from all over the country to compete in table tennis, badminton, squash and tennis. A number of students from the school entered the tournament, and came out with some successes- with Stamford School students winning both the Men’s C Division and the U16 Juniors. Two of our junior club members from Stamford Tennis Club took part, with Chase Burgess securing the U16 title, and Jamie Anderson taking second place.

No doubt the Stamford event will become a favourite on the Racketlon calendar, given our central location - and we look forward to hosting more entries from our 400 members at STC next year!

During his visit, John presented two county awards - the club of the year award to chairman Mark Anderson, plus the coach of the year award to CJ Selvidge, our Head Coach.

League success for Stamford Tennis Club in 2021

Stamford tennis club have wrapped up another great season in the two local hard court leagues - Huntingdon & Peterborough (H&P) and Peterborough & District (P&D).

In the H&P league, the men’s A team topped division 1, winning all of their matches, the B team came fourth in division 2, with the C team finishing seventh in division 3. The ladies A team finished third in division 1, with the B and C teams finishing mid table in divisions 2 and 3.

In the P&D league, the A team finished a close second in division 1, with the B team coming fourth in the same division. The C team won division 2, securing promotion to the top tier. Next year promises to be a competitive season with the A, B & C teams all in division one! The E team finished mid table in division 3.

These strong performances reflect the hard work put in by our team captains to make this all happen, and our thanks go to Martin Trawford, Neil Chedd, Mark Needham, Lottie Butler, Felicity Chedd and Maggie Knight in the H&P league, and to Alex Smith, Mark Freeman, Kevin Tassell and Viv Willson in the P&D league.

The following photos are the Men’s A Team (H&P division 1 winners) - Ralph Clarke, Alex Smith, Martin Trawford and Felix Beech, and the Men’s C Team (P&D division 2 winners) - Gareth Lewis, Neil Chedd, Josh Good, Anthony Sheehan, Ivan Reading, Kevin Tassell, Richard Hernaman and Simon Burnell.
