Breakfast is my FAVOURITE meal of the day, but it never used to be 🫢

I was told skipping breakfast was great, especially for “saving calories.” E.g. intermittent fasting. It’s also maybe one of the biggest reasons you’re raiding the cupboard after dinner.

Here’s what’s happening in your body:

1. Blood sugar is dipping and spiking. When you don’t have brekkie, your blood sugar dips and spikes aggressively for the rest of the day. Your body sends constant signals for snacks while it chases stability.

2. Ghrelin (your hunger hormone) builds up. Ghrelin rises the longer you don’t eat. By the time you have your lunch you’re ravenous. And ghrelin doesn’t necessarily settle down straight away, it can take a couple of hours.

3. Your body’s chasing calories. If you have 200 calories for lunch after skipping breakfast, your body doesn’t just forget about the calories it’s missed. It still very much needs them. So by dinner time, your appetite is actually asking for a full day’s worth of food in half a day.

4. You’re doing it all the time. When you regularly under eat, especially in the morning, your body stays in a state of slight stress. Chronically elevated cortisol is linked to increased evening appetite, cravings for low nutrient dense foods, and disrupted satiety signals.
