Hi everybody! It’s nearing the end of semester which means it’s election time again! This is your chance to get in with a say on how our little society is run. If you have any ideas, suggestions, or you just love pool so much then you should consider applying for one of these roles!

Below are brief descriptions of the positions to give everyone an idea of what you can get involved in as part of next years Pool Society Committee. You must be a student at the University of Stirling to run for a committee position.

President:
It goes without saying that this is a very important position in the society. The President's role is to be a figurehead, working closely with the Club Captain and the wider committee on key policy decisions regarding things like events and funding. The President also works with all other committee members to help guide them in their roles, and should develop and maintain relationships with important external contacts within the Student's Union. The focus of this role is on recruiting new members, inclusivity and the smooth operation of the society. Skills required for this role are a positive attitude, good communication skills, a willingness to devote time to the role during Semester and obviously, a genuine desire to build upon our successes as a Society that we have achieved so far.

Club Captain (Secretary):
Like the President, the Club Captain is a figurehead within the society and shares the leadership workload. The focus of the Club Captain is more oriented towards pursuing a strategy which will develop the competitive skills of members to prepare us for national competitions. This includes working closely with the Tournament Secretary on running competitive fixtures within the society such as the league and University Championships, working with the President on increasing member engagement and interest, organising coaching and participation at national level.

Treasurer:
The Treasurer's main duties are proactively keeping track of Society finances, authorising reimbursement of some expenses of members and take the lead role (working with President and Club Captain) in fundraising initiatives. There are lots of opportunities to raise extra funds to allow us to potentially subsidise things like table costs and travel. Further, the treasurer will be in charge of the financial maintenance of the pool table in Juniper Court (emptying money weekly, maintaining float within the office).

Tournament Secretary:
The Tournament Secretary is an important role within the committee. This person's main remit is to manage competitive activity on a day-to-day basis including signing up members for competitions, designing formats, collecting results and keeping participants up-to-date regularly via our social media.

Social Secretary:
This is the Ideal role for a person who wants to help with the running of the society in a fun way. An outgoing person with a flair for creativity with regards to designing and managing organised social events would be perfect for this committee position. This person is also the main person in charge of all social media platforms.

If you are not sure whether a named committee position is suited for you, you can also run for Ordinary Member.

Ordinary Member:
Finally we have ordinary members of the Committee. We are looking for people who have few regular responsibilities but will come along to committee meetings to contribute ideas and help out when they can with regards to the wide range of things the Society does. This could range from putting up posters to helping organise an event, and just generally being able to aid and assist the committee in valuable ways. This is a good role for anyone as being on the committee helps to better understand all the society does. This role can be held by more than one person.

So that's all the positions available on the committee. Due to several currents members graduating this year, it is unlikely that all of these positions will be filled. However, the positions of President, Club Captain (Secretary) and Treasurer must be filled for the society to be eligible for SU funding and to be recognised as an active society. Without these people we wouldn't have a Pool Society at Stirling so all these roles are important and rewarding. Becoming a committee member will look excellent on your CV after graduation and will help you develop skills also.

If you are interested in running for a committee position please contact the current Club captain Anna (Saor Alba on facebook) or speak to us at our practice sessions. The new committee for the 2025/26 academic year must be submitted before the end of the Month 😊🎱
