Tracey Part 9 - Diet advice

She Was Terrified Everyone At The Gym Would Stare At Her …Then She Lost 51lbs.
There are plenty of reasons to put off getting back into shape.
You tell yourself you’ll start when work calms down.
You’ll sort your food out first.
You’ll lose a little bit of weight before joining somewhere.
Or you’ll wait until you feel a bit fitter, because the thought of walking into a gym when you don’t feel comfortable with your body is bad enough without worrying about everyone else looking at you.
Rachel had one of those fears.
Before joining Transformation HQ, her fitness levels were low, she was overweight and she’d been told she was borderline diabetic.
She knew she needed to do something.
But knowing that didn’t make walking into her first session any less intimidating.
Because Rachel had already imagined what she’d find when she got there.
A room full of people who were fitter than her.
And the horrible feeling that they’d all notice she wasn’t.
As Rachel puts it:
“I was worried about being stared at during the sessions and thought everybody would be super fit.”
She went anyway.
And that first decision ended up changing far more than the number on her scales.
Rachel started with our 6-Week Meltdown.
Rather than being given a gym membership and left to figure everything out herself, she had three coached small-group sessions each week, a simple meal planner and accountability to help her stay on track.
There was no need to know what exercises to do before she arrived.
There was no expectation that she should already be fit.
She simply had somewhere to be three times a week and people there to coach her when she arrived.
That’s a small difference on paper.
In real life, it can be enormous.
Because starting isn’t usually the problem.
Most people who’ve struggled with their weight have started plenty of times.
The harder part comes a few weeks later.
When the initial motivation has gone.
When you’ve had a bad weekend with your food.
When you’re tired after work and really don’t fancy exercising.
That’s when another unused gym membership doesn’t help much.
A class can give you somewhere to exercise, but it doesn’t necessarily give you individual coaching or help with the habits outside the gym.
One-to-one personal training gives you personal attention, but several sessions every week can become expensive.
Rachel had something different.
A plan.
Coaches who knew her.
Other members going through their own version of the same thing.
And somewhere she could keep turning up even on the days when she didn’t particularly feel like it.
Rachel’s own advice now says everything:
“Even if you don’t feel like going, still turn up. You’ll feel better after completing it.”
Those days add up.
After her initial six weeks, Rachel continued training with Transformation HQ through the monthly rolling membership.
That meant she could keep the structure and coaching she’d built during the Meltdown rather than finishing six weeks and going back to doing everything alone.
And slowly, something Rachel hadn’t expected began to happen.
Remember, this was someone who’d been worried about the other people in the room before she’d even walked into it.
She thought they might stare.
She worried they’d all be super fit.
Instead, the gym became somewhere she enjoyed going.
And one of the people she met there became far more important than just another person she trained alongside.
“I’ve met a woman who has become one of my closest friends.”
The place Rachel had worried about walking into had become somewhere she actually wanted to be.
Her progress continued too.
Through the rolling membership, Rachel could take part in the 12-Week Shoot when she was ready to push things further.
And when you put Rachel’s original photograph next to the photograph from her Shoot, the physical change is difficult to miss.
But there’s another contrast in those two photographs that’s arguably even bigger.
At the beginning, Rachel was worried about being looked at while exercising.
Later, she was standing in front of a professional photographer having the results of all that work captured on camera.
Same Rachel.
But a very different level of confidence.
And the numbers tell their own story.
Rachel has lost 51lbs.
She’s taken 8 inches off her waist.
Those are huge changes.
But neither tells you what Rachel herself seems to value most about where she is now.
Because losing weight is one thing.
Feeling differently about the person looking back at you in the mirror is something else.
Rachel explains it simply:
“I feel more confident in myself. I enjoy going to the gym now. I don’t see it as a chore, which I used to do when I was in other gyms. I actually like my body shape now.”
That last sentence is worth reading again.
“I actually like my body shape now.”
Not because she’s followed a perfect diet.
Not because she suddenly loves exercising every single day.
Rachel’s own advice makes it clear that there are still days when she’d rather not go.
The difference is that those days no longer automatically knock her off course.
She’s learned to keep turning up.
She’s learned to listen to the coaches.
She’s picked up ideas from other members.
And instead of trying to do everything alone, she’s surrounded herself with people who help her keep moving in the right direction.
Her advice to somebody starting out is refreshingly practical:
“Keep at it. Don’t give up. Listen to the coaching staff; they know what they’re talking about. Talk to other members to get recipe ideas.”
If you’re reading Rachel’s story and recognising some of yourself in it, perhaps your biggest problem isn’t that you don’t know how to lose weight.
You’ve probably tried enough things over the years to know the basics.
Maybe the real problem is finding something you can still follow when you’re tired, busy or simply can’t be bothered.
And perhaps you’ve been putting off joining somewhere because you want to get a little fitter first.
Rachel understands that feeling better than most.
She nearly allowed the fear of being the unfit person in the room to stop her.
Today she’s 51lbs lighter, 8 inches smaller around her waist, more confident, enjoying her training and happy with her body shape.
There will always be a reason to wait another week.
Rachel’s advice?
“Just do it. The first step is always the hardest, but once that is done you will feel better. I promise you.”
You might eventually look back and realise the hardest part wasn’t changing your body.
It was finally deciding to start.
