Well Junes Grading most definitely did not disappoint as it had everything you expect from a grading. The “ MAGNIFICENT SEVEN” taking part most definitely brought their A game.
Sensei Paul put the Freestyle candidates through a very searching and intense grading. Everything from basic stance, kicks , strikes and combinations and Kata were fully explored.
Over on the Jiu Jitsu mats I ensured no stone was left unturned with the two candidates I had. Following similar path as the Freestyle with basics , the heat was then turned up and full on Jiu Jitsu became an exceptional days offering.
Stand out Student of the two Grading sessions was Charlie who smashed his grading with an outstanding 98%. Such was his excellent demonstration of skill, ability and understanding of technique he was also awarded 3rd Kyu Jiu Jitsu. Huge Congratulations Charlie on well deserved promotion.
Congratulations also go to
Jerome 8th Kyu Freestyle
Janna. 8th Kyu Freestyle
Darius. 6th Kyu Freestyle
Philip. 4th Kyu Freestyle
Damian. 3rd Kyu Freestyle
Rachel. 6th Kyu Jiu Jitsu
Charlie.4th Kyu Jiu Jitsu Distinction
Charlie. 3rd Kyu Jiu Jitsu Promotion
Again Huge Thank You to everyone who gave their time to be Ukes. Your selflessness and loyalty to your fellow students is greatly appreciated.
Now the work towards Septembers grading begins in earnest for some of you. For those taking higher grades December is your target.
Thank you All for a great grading day, you should be very proud of your achievement.

It was part 1 of Junes Grading today with 2 candidates grading in Jiu Jitsu. Whilst Sensei Paul prepared the Freestyle students for next Saturday ,Clare and Andy were mercilessly put through their paces.
Under the watchful eyes of Chief Instructors Helen and Myself aided by Sensei Atticus the duo were examined in several areas of Jiu Jitsu. Despite the heat in the dojo which sapped their energy they went through Breakfalls, Throws, Locks, Strangles. After a brief break they continued with multiple attackers , weapon attacks and much more before concluding the grading with a pad session.
After a short deliberation and totalling of grading points both candidates were successfully passed.
Huge Congratulations to
Clare 2nd Kyu Brown
Andy 8th Kyu Yellow
Thank you to all the Ukes for donating your bodies to martial arts torture. Without your selfless sacrifice of mind and limbs Gradings would not be possible.
Thank You all for your greatly appreciated support of your fellow students.
Enjoy your weekend

With Junes grading creeping ever closer today’s lessons were all syllabus based. Improving basic applications and overall technique was the main thrust in both mats.
Attendance still remains an issue which will certainly see a number of you excluded from the June grading.
That being said there are incredible improvements from a number of students in both Karate and Jiu Jitsu. Jerome is improving every week and his kata is considerably improved.
On the Jiu Jitsu mats Charlie and Sensei Greg are pushing the bar ever higher with some incredible efforts . They are quickly followed by Jayden who has found his stride in both Jiu Jitsu and Bo Kata.
Sensei Paul is hoping to have a strong Freestyle grading but ultimately it is down to you getting the lessons in.
The Black Belt Grading is set for 20th June due to our competing in the BCKA Tournament on the 27th.
Those wishing to enter this event please speak to Sensei Paul or Sensei John McManus on Monday nights.
Enjoy your weekend and get yourself back in the Dojo on Monday .

A very positive Saturdays lessons that went from strength to strength. Progression training was the main thrust on the Jiu Jitsu mats. Taking a basic strangle escape and progressing to a counter and then a counter to the counter. Seeing the progress was brilliant especially taking simple techniques and enhancing them. The students learned to believe in themselves a bit more and to trust the process.
This was much the same mantra on the Freestyle mats as prep for Junes grading was ramped up a notch or two. Sensei Paul expressed the importance of good solid basics and strong stance. Progress is slow at the moment but it’s still progress.
With a looming tournament with BCKA not far off and a 2nd Dan Grading both at the end of June the late Weapons/ Kata session was definitely focused.
Mostly everything comes down to consistency and THAT needs to be improved drastically. No one improves with disjointed attendance which stunts progression and growth. The Instructor team is incredibly dedicated to everyone’s growth and fulfilled potential. This can only be accomplished with Students meeting them half way , this means regular attendance to consecutive lessons. Give it some serious consideration and work on improving regular attendance to classes.
Next lesson is Monday, so start the improvement now!!!

Today class was full of energy, grit and determination from everybody.
An extended warm-up featuring some of everyone's favourites like bring Sally up, Burpees, sprawls and squat jumps. It even got competitive between a certain farther and son to see who could hold their arms at shoulder height the longest...
For the next hour and a half all students worked on pads, particular attention was paid to keeping a guard up. The number of times I see people dropping guard when striking needed to be addressed, so, the pad holders were instructed to "utilise" the opening left by an absent guard 😉 It's amazing how everyone suddenly had a decent guard after that 🤔 Basics done correctly was the focus of the session, once we get those locked into everyone's mind we can build power, greasy fast speed, footwork, timing, rhythm, head movement and level changes. Lots to come but I was very impressed with the effort shown by all students, everyone was sweating buckets 💪🏻
After the break Sensei Owen and Sensei Ethan worked the freestyle students through the Kata they require for the June grading. Remember your stances, blocks and strikes have to mean something. If any of them aren't strong and solid it defeats the object of what you are doing.
The Jujitsu students had a special guest keeping an eye on them this afternoon... Me. It was nice to watch Sensei Greg and Charlie working on the intensity and being more instinctive when it comes to defending themselves. Take everything you've learned and make it an instinct, making the right decision on how to incapacitate your opponent quickly and effectively is where we want everyone to be.
Huge props all round today. Thank you all for training.
A reminder that the DOJO IS CLOSED ON MONDAY AND THURSDAY next week. Monday is a bank holiday and on Thursday the hall is being used as a polling station for the local elections.
Enjoy the week off and I'll see you next Saturday.

A mixture of feelings about tonight's class.
Firstly the attendance is starting to slip, especially on the freestyle side. We need consistency and dedication to training, there is about 5 weeks until the next grading and not one freestyle student has even got half the hours required. If this doesn't improve then I'll be left with two options. 1, cancel the freestyle grading for the second time in a row. 2, allow students to take the grading but only for a half grade (colour/white stripe). I'm not handing out full grades to spare people's feelings, if you don't earn it you don't get it. That's the reality of life.
With that said the freestyle students spent the evening going through their kihon and finished off with some pad work.
The Jujitsu students worked on multi-man attacks and finished off with kicking practice on the thai pads.
The fitness class is ON on Saturday starting at 11am and the regular class begins at 12.30pm until 4.30pm.
See you on Saturday

A sweltering nights training to round off a beautiful day.
Tonight started with a slightly more relaxed warm-up but that was as easy as the students got it.
The Jujitsu students spent the evening practicing strangle escapes in a reflex fashion but with a slight twist... If you repeat you get push-ups. A very effective way to get the students thinking about what to do and to mix things up. Sensei Atticus is determined to increase the fitness levels so for the last 20 minutes he had the students trying to beat their previous Tabatta scores.
Over on the freestyle the students performed kata which was scored, I was determined to iron out the bad habits that have been present for far too long. There is only one way a stance should be, only one way a strike should be and only one way a block should be. If they aren't done correctly don't be upset with me that I've pointed it out. I can show you how it's done a thousand times but if you keep doing it incorrectly then we're just going round in circles. After the critique the students did the Kata's again to try and improve on their first score... which had varying degrees of success. To finish off and remove any stored up tension they took out their frustrations on a kick shield.
Hopefully the weather stays nice so bring plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated, if you forget or need more we have some available to purchase.
The fitness class is on on Saturday so make use of it.
Please select availability on the WhatsApp group poll to let us know who's training.
See you on Saturday
