🏏 Weekend Match Report 📝

A mixed weekend for Offerton CC, with victories for our 2nd XI and some encouraging performances across all three sides.

1st XI vs Appleton 1XI

Captain Peter Smith won the toss and elected to bat first at The Paddock.

Andy Thomas and Cian Simpson opened the innings, with Andy getting us underway in style with a beautiful cover drive for four in the opening over. Unfortunately, Cian couldn’t replicate last week’s heroics and was dismissed for 0. Zakir followed shortly after, leaving Offerton struggling at 5-2.

Shahab joined Andy at the crease and the pair looked to rebuild. Andy struck another boundary but was dismissed for 10, leaving us 20-3. Habib Khan then fell to a harsh decision without troubling the scorers.

At 28-4, skipper Pete joined Shahab and together they began to steady the innings. Pete took on the role of aggressor, punishing anything loose and launching a huge six on his way to 41 before being bowled. Ben Morgan departed first ball, becoming the fourth batter to fall without scoring.

Shyam added 4, Bailey contributed 8, and Shahab played an excellent innings of 47 before being bowled. Jack Thelwell and Naseer Kiani both added 7 as Offerton were eventually bowled out for 142, a total that felt below par.

With the ball, Jack Thelwell and Naseer Kiani started strongly, keeping scoring opportunities to a minimum. Naseer made the breakthrough, with Cian Simpson taking a catch behind the stumps to leave Appleton 25-1.

Captain Pete rotated his bowlers in search of wickets, introducing Shahab and Shyam, both of whom bowled well without reward. Ben Morgan and Andy Thomas then entered the attack, with Andy producing the standout spell of 3-18 from 5 overs. Despite the efforts, Appleton reached the target five wickets down.

2nd XI vs Marple & Compstall 4XI

Sikander Khalifa lost the toss and was asked to bat first.

Amir Dar and Mitesh Patel opened the innings but both fell early, leaving the side at 20-2. Karl Martin and Mohammed Alif rebuilt well, taking the score to 50 before Karl was dismissed for 23.

Captain SK added 14 before being run out, while Abdul Kharoti provided the innings’ highlight with an explosive 35 from just 38 balls. Mohammed Alif contributed 18, and despite Usman (13), Danyal (9), Harrison (1) and Dominic (0) falling in quick succession, Offerton posted a competitive 155 all out. Esme finished unbeaten on 1.

With the ball, Captain SK and Harrison Gill opened up brilliantly. SK led from the front, claiming 4 wickets and finishing with outstanding figures of 8.2-2-23-4. Harrison bowled tightly throughout, while Amir Dar (10-2-34-3) and Esme Halford (5-1-16-2) also made key contributions.

Harrison returned to pick up a deserved wicket, finishing with figures of 10-3-23-1, as Offerton secured an impressive 46-run victory.

3rd XI vs Marple & Compstall 6XI

Bailey Hinks lost the toss and was asked to bowl first.

Faith Ebbage and Cian Simpson opened the bowling. Faith delivered an excellent spell of disciplined bowling but was unlucky to go wicketless, finishing with figures of 4-0-20-0. Cian created several chances, but unfortunately the fielding let us down on the day, with at least nine catches put down across the innings.

Abdul and Harley also bowled well without reward, before Karl Martin eventually broke through with the first wicket, leaving Marple at 51-1. Strong batting combined with missed opportunities in the field allowed the hosts to continue building.

When Cian and Max returned to the attack, both claimed two wickets each. Cian finished with 7-1-17-2 and Max with 4-0-19-2. Karl rounded off the innings with two more wickets, ending with figures of 7-0-43-2, as Marple posted 173 from their 35 overs.

Chasing 174, Bailey Hinks and Eshaan Jena-Das opened the batting, but Eshaan was bowled without scoring and Bailey soon followed for 10. Abdul made 6 as Offerton slipped to 34-3.

Paul Thornley joined Karl Martin and the pair rebuilt the innings. Karl punished the loose deliveries before Paul was dismissed for 13. Son Harley-James Thornley fell first ball, bringing a promoted Cian Simpson to the crease to face the hat-trick delivery, which he safely negotiated.

Karl and Cian moved the score along nicely before Karl retired on an excellent 53. Stanley Thompson then joined Cian and showed great maturity at the crease, supporting his teammate well before being dismissed for 7 while trying to increase the scoring rate. Max Mannion looked solid before falling for 3, while Steve Wharton suffered some unfortunate luck, padding a wide delivery onto his stumps first ball.

With Faith Ebbage joining Cian, the chase was still alive. Marple spread the field to limit boundary opportunities and bowled tightly. Cian continued to battle hard but eventually found the lone fielder on the leg-side boundary.

Offerton ultimately fell 30 runs short, but there were plenty of positives to take from a determined chase after a difficult afternoon in the field.

🏏 MATCH REPORT 🏏

Saturday saw our 1XI travel to Malpas whilst our 2XI hosted Haslington in what was a historic day for the club!

The 1XI made the trip across the border to face Malpas, with stand-in skipper losing the toss and being asked to bowl first in some sweltering conditions.

N Kiani and M Akhtar opened the bowling and quickly settled into their rhythm. Despite bowling 6 tidy overs in his first spell, N Kiani was unlucky not to pick up a wicket, with chances going down behind the stumps and in the field. At the other end, M Akhtar bowled with serious pace and intensity in the heat, finishing with outstanding figures of 11-4-17-4.

B Morgan and S Gollavilli then kept things tight through the middle overs. B Morgan proved difficult to get away, ending with figures of 8.1-2-16-1, whilst S Gollavilli recovered brilliantly after an expensive start to finish with 11-2-32-2. S Kiani chipped in superbly as the fifth bowler, taking 2 wickets for just 9 runs from 3 overs, alongside a run out from M Akhtar, as Offerton bowled Malpas out for 98 on a tricky wicket offering plenty for the bowlers.

Chasing 99 was never going to be straightforward, and Offerton found themselves in early trouble as S Kiani (1), Z Hossain (0), and H Khan (6) all fell cheaply, leaving the side 9-3 after 4 overs.

C Simpson looked positive from the outset, taking the attack to the Malpas bowlers despite wickets falling around him. After S Gollavilli departed for 4, Simpson continued to battle hard before eventually falling for a well-made 31. S Khalifa was unfortunately unable to stay long at the crease, leaving Offerton needing 46 runs with only 4 wickets remaining.

A Kharoti and B Morgan responded positively, continuing the aggressive approach and keeping hopes alive with valuable contributions of 10 and 20 respectively. However, further wickets from N Kiani (0) and P Smith (13) saw Offerton fall agonisingly short by just 2 runs in a thrilling finish.

Meanwhile, the 2XI hosted Haslington in another tough contest. Stand-in captain Bailey Hinks also lost the toss and was asked to bowl first. The day marked a huge milestone for the club, with Faith Ebbage making her 2XI debut alongside Esme Halford — the first time two ladies have represented the same Offerton side in the club’s history. 👏

O Hosler started brilliantly with a tight opening spell and picked up an early wicket. Ahsan recovered well after a difficult first over, before skipper Bailey Hinks brought himself into the attack… enough said! Harrison Gill then replaced the skipper and delivered 5 very controlled overs. Debutant Mitesh Patel bowled impressively tight lines, whilst Aum Patel also produced an excellent spell from the opposite end. E Halford and D Massingham rounded off the bowling effort, with Esme also contributing a run out in the field.

Special mentions go to F Ebbage, A Patel and Mitesh Patel for making their debuts and fielding brilliantly in the 25+ degree heat. ☀️

Unfortunately, the batting innings never quite got going, although skipper Bailey Hinks produced a superb maiden half-century from 98 balls. Despite his efforts, the only other batter to get into double figures was D Meredith who scored 12* as Offerton 2XI eventually fell to defeat by 104 runs.

Finally, we would once again like to thank all of our sponsors for their continued support throughout the season! 🙌

Keep your eyes peeled this week as we announce even more sponsors… 👀

📝 MATCH REPORT 📝

Another weekend of washed-out games… 🌧️

Our 1XI hosted Cheadle Hulme Ladybridge 1XI. Skipper Adam lost the toss and we were put into bat, with Shahab Kiani and Shan Mumtaz opening up. Unfortunately, as has been the story of the season so far for the 1XI, wickets fell quicker than London buses, with only Shahab (18), Shyam (35) and Ben (10) reaching double figures as we were bowled out for a below-par 86.

Adam Davies opened the bowling and struck with the second ball of the innings to leave the visitors 0-1 before taking himself off after the first over. Muhammad Akhtar bowled with real pace from the other end, keeping things tight and deserved more reward than the single wicket he claimed — on another day he could easily have had five. Nasser Kiani picked up two wickets as Ladybridge slipped to 40-4 on a pitch that was beginning to offer more for the bowlers.

Unfortunately, with the score on 54-4, the rain arrived and the game was eventually abandoned for the second week running, with both sides taking 6 points each.

Our 2XI travelled to Prestbury CC looking to bounce back from last week’s heavy defeat to Aston.

Again, Amir lost the toss and the 2XI were also put into bat. Skipper Amir opened alongside Zahid Yaqub, with both making solid starts before being dismissed for 25 and 13 respectively. Wickets then fell at regular intervals before Zeeshan Mahmood top-scored with 29. The tail wagged well, with Esme Halford impressing with 15 and Harrison Gill adding 10 as the side posted 134.

Zahid and Louie opened the bowling, with Zahid returning excellent figures of 2-13 from his 6 overs and Louie claiming 1-26 from his 6 before the rain eventually arrived with Prestbury on 49-3.

Unfortunately, play could not resume, meaning both sides again had to settle for 6 points each.

At least the ducks enjoyed the wet outfield 🥲

📝 TEAM NEWS 📝

Team news from The Paddock as both sides look to climb the tables this weekend! 🏏

The 1XI are at home once again as they take on local neighbours Cheadle Hulme Ladybridge CC.

There’s just one change for the 1XI, with Bailey Hinks returning to the side in place of Andy Thomas. The lads will be looking to build on last weekend’s promising start, after racing to 50-0 from 7 overs before the rain brought an early end to proceedings.

The 2XI travel away to Prestbury 2XI with several changes to the side. Louie Cassidy, Harrison Gill, Esme Halford, Zeeshan Mahmood and Atif Hussain all come into the team as they look to bounce back from last week’s defeat.

🍻 The bar will be fully stocked and open from 12:30pm, so come down to The Paddock and support the lads!

📺 If you can’t make it, we’ll be posting a link on Saturday so you can watch the action live on YouTube.
