🏏 Weekend Match Report 📝
A mixed weekend for Offerton CC, with victories for our 2nd XI and some encouraging performances across all three sides.
1st XI vs Appleton 1XI
Captain Peter Smith won the toss and elected to bat first at The Paddock.
Andy Thomas and Cian Simpson opened the innings, with Andy getting us underway in style with a beautiful cover drive for four in the opening over. Unfortunately, Cian couldn’t replicate last week’s heroics and was dismissed for 0. Zakir followed shortly after, leaving Offerton struggling at 5-2.
Shahab joined Andy at the crease and the pair looked to rebuild. Andy struck another boundary but was dismissed for 10, leaving us 20-3. Habib Khan then fell to a harsh decision without troubling the scorers.
At 28-4, skipper Pete joined Shahab and together they began to steady the innings. Pete took on the role of aggressor, punishing anything loose and launching a huge six on his way to 41 before being bowled. Ben Morgan departed first ball, becoming the fourth batter to fall without scoring.
Shyam added 4, Bailey contributed 8, and Shahab played an excellent innings of 47 before being bowled. Jack Thelwell and Naseer Kiani both added 7 as Offerton were eventually bowled out for 142, a total that felt below par.
With the ball, Jack Thelwell and Naseer Kiani started strongly, keeping scoring opportunities to a minimum. Naseer made the breakthrough, with Cian Simpson taking a catch behind the stumps to leave Appleton 25-1.
Captain Pete rotated his bowlers in search of wickets, introducing Shahab and Shyam, both of whom bowled well without reward. Ben Morgan and Andy Thomas then entered the attack, with Andy producing the standout spell of 3-18 from 5 overs. Despite the efforts, Appleton reached the target five wickets down.

2nd XI vs Marple & Compstall 4XI
Sikander Khalifa lost the toss and was asked to bat first.
Amir Dar and Mitesh Patel opened the innings but both fell early, leaving the side at 20-2. Karl Martin and Mohammed Alif rebuilt well, taking the score to 50 before Karl was dismissed for 23.
Captain SK added 14 before being run out, while Abdul Kharoti provided the innings’ highlight with an explosive 35 from just 38 balls. Mohammed Alif contributed 18, and despite Usman (13), Danyal (9), Harrison (1) and Dominic (0) falling in quick succession, Offerton posted a competitive 155 all out. Esme finished unbeaten on 1.
With the ball, Captain SK and Harrison Gill opened up brilliantly. SK led from the front, claiming 4 wickets and finishing with outstanding figures of 8.2-2-23-4. Harrison bowled tightly throughout, while Amir Dar (10-2-34-3) and Esme Halford (5-1-16-2) also made key contributions.
Harrison returned to pick up a deserved wicket, finishing with figures of 10-3-23-1, as Offerton secured an impressive 46-run victory.

3rd XI vs Marple & Compstall 6XI
Bailey Hinks lost the toss and was asked to bowl first.
Faith Ebbage and Cian Simpson opened the bowling. Faith delivered an excellent spell of disciplined bowling but was unlucky to go wicketless, finishing with figures of 4-0-20-0. Cian created several chances, but unfortunately the fielding let us down on the day, with at least nine catches put down across the innings.
Abdul and Harley also bowled well without reward, before Karl Martin eventually broke through with the first wicket, leaving Marple at 51-1. Strong batting combined with missed opportunities in the field allowed the hosts to continue building.
When Cian and Max returned to the attack, both claimed two wickets each. Cian finished with 7-1-17-2 and Max with 4-0-19-2. Karl rounded off the innings with two more wickets, ending with figures of 7-0-43-2, as Marple posted 173 from their 35 overs.
Chasing 174, Bailey Hinks and Eshaan Jena-Das opened the batting, but Eshaan was bowled without scoring and Bailey soon followed for 10. Abdul made 6 as Offerton slipped to 34-3.
Paul Thornley joined Karl Martin and the pair rebuilt the innings. Karl punished the loose deliveries before Paul was dismissed for 13. Son Harley-James Thornley fell first ball, bringing a promoted Cian Simpson to the crease to face the hat-trick delivery, which he safely negotiated.
Karl and Cian moved the score along nicely before Karl retired on an excellent 53. Stanley Thompson then joined Cian and showed great maturity at the crease, supporting his teammate well before being dismissed for 7 while trying to increase the scoring rate. Max Mannion looked solid before falling for 3, while Steve Wharton suffered some unfortunate luck, padding a wide delivery onto his stumps first ball.
With Faith Ebbage joining Cian, the chase was still alive. Marple spread the field to limit boundary opportunities and bowled tightly. Cian continued to battle hard but eventually found the lone fielder on the leg-side boundary.
Offerton ultimately fell 30 runs short, but there were plenty of positives to take from a determined chase after a difficult afternoon in the field.
