Flying Fit I help air crew escape quick fix weight loss solutions & create unshakeable levels of body confidence

Flying has been my life for the past 24 years, working for Virgin Atlantic as a Flight Service Manager out of Manchester. Alongside flying, I am a Personal Trainer at a private gym facility (Cheshire Velocity Training) and an online fitness coach with Flying Fit. Merging my flying experience and skills as a PT was a total revelation. It's my mission to help both cabin and flight crew escape quick fix weight loss solutions and to create unshakeable levels of body confidence.

For the last 3 years, I’ve been helping pilots lose weight online.

Then I realised there was a bigger worry I could help with.

The more pilots I talked to, the more one thing came up. It was partly the weight, yes. But really it was the medical. That nagging worry that creeps in during the weeks before one.

Now, a lot of the medical is out of your hands. Hearing, vision, the clinical side: that’s between you and your AME, and nothing to do with me.

But the physical side? Your weight, your fitness, your energy, how you’re actually looking after yourself between trips? That part you can do something about. And it’s often the part people leave until the last few weeks.

So I built something for it.

It’s a 2-minute check. A few honest questions on the physical side of being medical ready, and it shows you where you stand. No judgement, no catch.

A few pilots have taken it already. For some it was reassuring. For others it was the nudge they’d been putting off.

Better to know now than leave it to chance.

It’s free. Link in my bio 👆 (or on Facebook, link in the comments 👇)

What’s the one thing on the physical side you’d want sorted before your next medical?

How to describe the Coast to Coast bike ride challenge in just 5 words…

Horrendous. Relentless. Exhilarating. Unforgettable. Achievement. 🚴

Whitehaven to Sunderland. Just under 150 miles. 3 days, and more hills than I care to remember. They honestly were never-ending 😅

There were moments my legs were screaming and I genuinely questioned my life choices…

…and then there were moments flying downhill with the wind in my face that made every single climb worth it.

The best bit? Watching one of my pilot clients cross the finish line with me.

He’s trained really hard with Flying Fit since August, and all his hard work paid off.

And a massive thanks to both the guys I rode it with.

The laughs, the moans, the café stops, the flapjacks and the “nearly there” lies kept me going:

“It’s all downhill after Penrith” 😅
“Just 10 miles to go” 🫠

Dipping the wheel in the North Sea after starting at the Irish Sea just 3 days before is a feeling I won’t forget in a hurry.

The legs feel wrecked, but the heart is full ❤️

What’s on your bucket list that would scare you a bit? 👇

Today’s the day.

A few months ago, one of my pilot clients told me he was doing the Coast to Coast, Whitehaven to the east coast, over some properly brutal hills.

Then he asked if I fancied joining him.

I jumped at it. Partly for me, because it’s a challenge I’d never done. And partly because when a client sets a goal like this, I want to be right there helping him hit it.

Honestly, nothing gives me more joy than supporting him in achieving it.

Since August, he’s been following his training plan in the Flying Fit app to get ready, with sessions fitted around his roster and a busy schedule. Some weeks went to plan, some didn’t. He kept going anyway.

Three of us, three days, just under 150 miles. Time to find out if it paid off.

Wish us luck. I’ll report back on how the legs are holding up 🚴‍♂️

What’s a challenge you’ve said yes to that scared you a bit? 👇

A pilot asked me on the crew bus the other day:

‘How do you get yourself to the hotel gym every trip? I can never find the motivation.’

Here’s the thing. I don’t rely on motivation. I rely on a habit that’s so ingrained it now feels wrong to skip it. A few things that work for me:

As crew, I’m on my feet all flight, so I’ve had my movement. A pilot’s sat down the whole way. For you, just getting moving matters: 20 minutes on the treadmill or the cross trainer when you land is worth a lot more than you’d think.

I don’t train the evening I arrive. I’ll do it the next day, but not at 7:30am. To me, around that time always feels like the gym ‘rush hour’. Everyone’s crammed in then, queuing for one dumbbell bench. It puts me right off. So I go mid-morning.

I enjoy my morning first, get a bit of work done, find a nice café, have a proper coffee, then train when I’m focused and in the right headspace.

My kit’s always packed and ready. It’s non-negotiable. I’ve got to the point where if I fly home without training, it doesn’t sit right with me.

That’s the goal. Not motivation. A habit at a set time that feels off when you miss it.

What time of day do you train best on a trip? 👇

I got spoilt in Atlanta on my last trip.

There's a little takeout place I always go to when I'm there. I picked up my usual and they'd chucked in a free lentil soup and a blueberry sponge. "Because you're a regular."

Honestly, it made my day.

The trouble starts, though, when "it's free" becomes the reason you eat it, not because you actually want it.

And that's the thing with this job. There's always food you didn't plan for. Crew food on board, chocolates doing the rounds in the galley, a welcome snack at the hotel. It never stops.

The soup was no problem, that's proper food. As for the sponge, I had a small bit and enjoyed every mouthful.

I'm not saying turn the free stuff down. Life's too short. I just have one simple rule: eat what I'd planned first, then decide about the extras.

What's the one freebie that always gets you on a trip? (Mine used to be the galley chocolates)👇

It’s Friday.

For most people, that means the weekend’s coming.

For pilots and crew, it means… nothing in particular.

Your weekend might be a Tuesday. Your Monday might start at 0400 in a hotel in Atlanta (which was mine this week, with a great view!).

And that’s exactly why ‘I’ll start on Monday’ never works for us.

Monday plans assume a normal week. We don’t get normal weeks.

So the plan has to work on any day: a flying day, a landing day, a layover, a day off that’s mostly spent recovering.

That’s how I’ve approached my own fitness for years, and it’s how I coach the crew I work with.

Not perfect weeks. Simple routines that survive the roster.

Pilots and crew, what does your Friday look like this week? ✈️

A pilot client asked me recently to take on the Coast to Coast bike challenge with him.

I said yes before I’d even thought about it 🚴‍♂️✈️

139 miles. Three days. Some seriously brutal hills.

That’s become my rule this year: when an opportunity turns up, grab it.

Don’t wait until you feel ready, because you rarely will. Say yes, then work out how to make it happen.

This week, with just 2 weeks to go, we did one of our final training rides: 28km around Poynton and Bollington, nearly 300m of climbing, and a lot of laughing (and puffing) on the way up. 💪

The bit I didn’t expect? I’m genuinely enjoying the training, not just putting up with it.

Planning rides around flying rosters, getting out when we can, watching each other get fitter week by week.

That’s what most people miss about getting fit.

It isn’t a punishment you endure until a date on the calendar or the goal is achieved. The process itself can be the good part.

Pilots, you already have a date like that every year: your medical.

It doesn’t have to be something you dread, crash diet or panic train for. It can be the thing that gets you started.

More on that very soon 👀

Checking in on a client this morning from a hotel room in Atlanta.

Three and a half weeks in, and they’ve gone from 78 kg to just over 74.5 kg, while still flying.

Look at the shape of that graph, though. It’s not a straight line, and it never will be.

Weight moves differently depending on what the roster’s doing: long days, time zone changes, broken sleep, salty crew food, flying days versus days off.

Some weeks it drops quickly, other weeks it holds steady while your body catches up.

That’s completely normal, and it’s exactly why chasing a number every week doesn’t work for crew.

What does work is a plan built around the roster you actually fly: what to eat on a flying day, how to handle a landing day, and short sessions you can do in any hotel gym.

Stick to that, and the overall direction takes care of itself.

Pilots, something’s coming in the next couple of weeks to help you get medical ready. Watch this space. ✈️

Every pilot knows the feeling in the weeks before a medical. Checking the scales, cutting the drinks, promising yourself you’ll sort it “after this trip.”

Chris stopped waiting for the right roster and started training around the one he’s got. 💪🏻✈️

Something’s coming for pilots who want to know exactly where they stand before their next medical. More on that soon. Are you medical ready?

There's that moment 2-3 hours into an 8 hour flight. ✈️

Service is done, everyone's in the galley picking at what's left...

Bread roll here, someone's leftover dessert there, chocolate doing the rounds.

What's your move?

Have you planned ahead, are you winging it, or do you just think, to hell with it today and enjoy it?

Would love to hear your comments! ⬇️☺️
