Today set a new provisional June maximum temperature record for the UK.

This record is likely to be broken tomorrow with heat spreading further northwards.

A “tropical night” for some last night. This is where temperatures don’t fall below 20’C.

At Saint Athen, south Glamorgan, the temperature didn’t fall below 20.3’C, which is the highest June minimum temperature on record for Wales.

Many more day time and night time records to come this week, with conditions still hot into the weekend (although less extremely so).

Meanwhile, over 29,000 lightning strikes occurred last night from elevated thunderstorms that tracked eastwards across parts of the south as a shortwave trough tracked eastwards ⚡️

Met Office Red warning issued for parts of central southern England and southeast Wales, covering Wednesday and Thursday, inside the wider Amber warning with the separate Amber warning for today and Tuesday, too.

38-40’C daytime maximums possible, combined with high humidity and very warm nights.

Getting very close to the UK all time temperature record, never mind the June record.

Extraordinary temperatures.

Automated forecasts are showing 40’C in a few places this coming week.

Whilst such temperatures are not completely out of the question, the most likely highest maximum temperatures are 37-38’C on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Many places will beat the UK all time June record maximum temperature of 35.8’C, with the hottest conditions across the south early in the week but spreading northwards by Thursday.

It is becoming increasingly likely that the UK all time June maximum temperature record (35.6’C recorded in 1976) will be beaten next week, potentially by quite a wide margin, across a large area of the UK, and on multiple days. These exceptionally high temperatures will be combined with high humidity and very warm nights.

The Amber heat warning was yesterday extended to cover more of central and southern England as well as eastern parts of Wales, with further updates likely.

Amber heat warning issued for southern areas early next week. Only the third time one has been issued since the system was introduced, and the first time since the record breaking July 2022 spell.

Day time maximum temperatures not too dissimilar to those during the May heatwave but higher humidity and warmer nights.

Slight chance of breaking the June maximum temperature record next week.

The heat relaxes a bit mid week but may build again later in the week.

Hottest in the south but still warm or very warm further north.

18/06/2026

A slight chance of record breaking temperatures early next week across the south of the UK.

Something more muted but still very warm to hot, north to south, is more likely but this risk needs watching in the coming days.

16/06/2026

A significant heatwave develops across southern and Central Europe through this week, with the UK on the boundary between these hot conditions and much cooler conditions to the northwest.

Fronts along that boundary will bring cloud and rain at times, especially across the north and west of the UK, but there will be some drier and brighter conditions which will be most frequent in the south and east.

It will be very warm to hot for south eastern areas of the UK, reaching the high twenties and at times the low 30s in the hottest spots, but cooler further north and west.

A small chance that the more significant heat over the near continent affects parts of the UK early next week, but high uncertainty with an equal split between that and somewhat fresher (but likely still warm) conditions.

Warming up but no heatwave.

It turns more settled and warmer for most this weekend into next week. Temperatures above average in the south and closer to average in the north, so warmer than of late. More in the way of dry and bright conditions., too, but less settled conditions affecting northern areas at times.

It may turn generally cooler and less settled again through next week, but southern areas perhaps hanging onto some warmth and generally drier conditions. A fair bit of uncertainty surrounding this currently.

Month of 2 halves.

June has so far seen a lot of unsettled and rather cool conditions, and this continues for the next few days. A westerly flow bringing in showers and longer spells of rain, interspersed by drier and brighter conditions.

All change by the weekend as high pressure builds in, bringing more settled conditions and an increase in temperatures. Potentially turning hot in the south. The far northwest continuing to be at risk of some less settled conditions at times.
