Wedgwood FC hosted Robin Hood Rookery at the Wedgwood Sports And Social Club on the morning of 15 March 2026, kicking off at 10:30am in a league fixture. The match ended in a thrilling 4-3 defeat for Wedgwood FC after a pulsating 90 minutes of football plus added time. Despite a valiant effort and a late surge, Wedgwood were unable to overturn the visitors’ lead.
Wedgwood FC lined up in a traditional 4-4-2 formation, deploying four defenders, four midfielders, and two forwards. Ethan Wheeldon took his place between the sticks as goalkeeper, with Brendon Whitfield and Alex Bayley operating as right and left full-backs respectively. The central defensive partnership was formed by EJ Laverty and Jordan Coleman, tasked with keeping the Robin Hood Rookery attack at bay. In midfield, Kei Parsons and Kieren Forrester provided width on the right and left flanks, while Nick Fricker and Connor Mathews anchored the central areas. Up front, the strike partnership consisted of Shane Mathews on the right and Joe Hitchens on the left. Jay Blood was named among the substitutes, ready to influence the game if called upon.
The match began with intensity as Wedgwood’s defensive line was tested early on. Alex Bayley made a crucial tackle in the fifth minute to halt an opposition advance, immediately followed by Ethan Wheeldon confidently catching a cross to quell the threat. Kei Parsons demonstrated his vision with a long pass a minute later, setting the tone for Wedgwood’s attacking intent. Ten minutes in, Jordan Coleman intercepted a dangerous move, preventing a clear chance for Robin Hood Rookery, but moments later he was booked for a bad tackle, signalling the physical nature of the contest.
Parsons continued to impress with another incisive long pass in the 18th minute, creating a promising opportunity for Wedgwood. However, the visitors struck first at the 21st minute, capitalising on a defensive lapse to open the scoring. Just two minutes later, Robin Hood Rookery doubled their lead, putting Wedgwood on the back foot early in the game. Attempts to respond were hindered as Connor Mathews fired over a hopeful effort in the 26th minute.
Wedgwood pulled one back in the 28th minute through Alex Bayley, who rose highest to head home a precise cross from Connor Mathews, sparking renewed hope. The defence remained alert, with EJ Laverty clearing danger in the 30th minute. Joe Hitchens tested the opposition goalkeeper twice in quick succession around the half-hour mark but was denied on both occasions. Unfortunately for Wedgwood, Robin Hood Rookery restored their two-goal cushion in the 36th minute.
As the first half drew to a close, Nick Fricker’s attempt sailed high in the 41st minute, while Wheeldon produced a full-stretch save in the 43rd and punched clear another effort in the 44th minute, keeping Wedgwood in the contest. The half ended with Wedgwood trailing 3-1.
At the interval, Wedgwood made a tactical substitution, bringing Jay Blood on for Shane Mathews to inject fresh energy into the side. The second half saw Wedgwood apply pressure, and their efforts were rewarded in the 52nd minute when an own goal by a Robin Hood Rookery player, following a dangerous cross from Kieren Forrester, halved the deficit. Joe Hitchens continued to press with three attempts between the 55th and 60th minutes, all thwarted by the opposition goalkeeper or missing the target.
Kieren Forrester was shown a yellow card in the 64th minute for a bad tackle, reflecting the increasingly combative nature of the match. Robin Hood Rookery responded swiftly, scoring again in the 65th minute to restore their two-goal advantage. Connor Mathews fired high in the 66th minute as Wedgwood sought to claw back the deficit. A further substitution was forced in the 72nd minute when Jay Blood was replaced by the injured Shane Mathews. EJ Laverty received a yellow card for a bad tackle at the same time, adding to Wedgwood’s disciplinary woes.
The match’s defining moment came in the 77th minute when Ethan Wheeldon made a crucial penalty save, keeping Wedgwood’s hopes alive. Three minutes later, Laverty unleashed a spectacular screamer, assisted by Kei Parsons, to bring the score to 4-3 and ignite the home crowd. Kieren Forrester’s shot was saved in the 82nd minute, and Alex Bayley’s attempt was also denied deep into injury time, but Wedgwood could not find the equaliser.
Despite the defeat, joe hitchens and Alex Bayley were standout performers, combining defensive solidity with key contributions in attack. Wedgwood FC’s spirited display was ultimately undone by defensive lapses and clinical finishing from Robin Hood Rookery, who left the Wedgwood Sports And Social Club with all three points in a memorable encounter.

George Barlow’s early attempt went wide in the fourth minute, but the team’s rhythm was evident. Jordan Coleman’s long pass in the fifth minute set up fluid play, which culminated in the opening goal just a minute later. The early exchanges were intense, with Barlow delivering a long pass in the seventh minute and Bayley making a crucial tackle to halt Bradwell’s advances. Ricci Edwards also made a timely tackle in the eighth minute, helping to maintain defensive composure. Owen Taylor contributed offensively with a long pass in the ninth minute and then blocked a clear chance at the tenth, demonstrating his dual role in defence and attack.
Wedgwood’s first substitution came early when Joe Hitchens replaced the injured Craig Cookson in the 13th minute.
