This is why cylinders should only be tested at Idest test centres.

Some none Idest testing services don't test or service the valves. Below is a valve that we've just taken off a cylinder!

This valve is from a very old cylinder that past its hydro test a year ago.

The ring gauge is for no-go and should only screw on a maximum of 2-3 turns. It goes the whole way showing the thread has worn excessively. This is a danger as the value could blow out of the cylinder at 200bar. Killing or maiming someone.

The valve had not been serviced for many years.

Saving a few pounds using a none Idest centre could cost you your life.

UK IDEST test standards require a Visual inspection at 2.5 years from new or after a Hydrostatic test. However the Dive Community world recommendation is every year.

This is why it's important that you check your equipment regularly and if not confident to do your self get your local dive centre to give everything a once over annually.

This cylinder came in for it's 2.5 year Visual test. On 1st look everything seems fine. However the blanking plug that was installed on the right hand side, didn't look as it was seated correctly. It was flush with the end of the valve and usually they are seated further in. The insert was actually just finger tight and with no pressure was unscrewed by just placing a thumb on it. From the other picture you can see just how far the blanking plug should have been inserted and gently nipped up with an allen key.

Whilst it didn't leak it would have been putting more strain on the threads and potentially keep unscrewing over time. Luckily it didn't cause an accident.
