Firstly we welcomed Dolly to GKR and George to the dojo.

In the first class, white belts worked on three basic punches and a front kick, then learned to link them into a moving combination. They also played ‘Sensei Says’. Higher grades worked on a red belt grading format.

In the second class, lower grades worked on blocks in pairs using noodles. Higher grades worked through kata and then onto kumite drills.

Congratulations to Basil who was awarded student of the month and Hamid with student of the week 🎉👌

Good luck Oscar who is attempting his next grade.

See you next week 🥋🥋

An energetic first class with the focus mitts! We all started with strikes and then repeated them with partners against the mitts with 60 second interval bursts. Once everyone looked sufficiently knackered we broke for fluids 🥵💥🥊! Before returning to partner work with the mitts - drilling combinations, footwork and movement.

The second class started with mass kata. Students were allowed to bow out and join the lower grades once they'd reach a kata that they didn't know. The lower grades were focusing on punches, kicks and 1st kata. Higher grades eventually finished with Sanseru and the lower grades - touch sparring.

Big congratulations go to Anna and Charlie-Marie who were awarded Student of the week 🎉

Hope to see you next week 🥋🥋

Fabulous to see new faces in the dojo. So firstly we all welcomed Bosco, Anna, Crystal and Abigail to GKR and Chesterton. You were all very enthusiastic and amazing throughout, fully deserved those certificates that were awarded.

After the warm up the first class was primarily basics for all with the higher grades progressing onto kihon combinations. The hour was finished with everyone doing first kata.

In the second hour we worked on progressively high grade kata, with the lower grades repeating.
Then we mored onto a simple blocking combination taught at senior class.
Those with kumite gear finished with drills and those without used the hoops and ladders for footwork combinations.
Awesome job everyone, especially Basil who was student of the week.

Remember the purple belt project will be running again for October and also the central zone tournament.
See you soon 🥋

Class started as a whole group working on kihon drills and focusing on the rotation of the torso. These were progressed for higher grades to link in multiple twists - as found in kata. Class then split with the lower grades practicing round kicks. The higher grades tested their neuroplasticity skills coming forward in reverse neko ashi dachi and backwards in sanchin dachi. The mats when then used to demonstrate two potential blocks and turning them into a sweep/ takedown.

In the second class lower grades used the mats working on sumo drop down drills with kicks and punches. Higher grades worked through kata, linking in those hip/ core twists. After the break the whole class came together quickly for a stance battle with Matt pushing 🥵. After that chaos we split again with higher grades continuing with kata empi and drilling aspects. The lower grades finished with first and second kata.

Congratulations to Oliver who picked up Student of the week 🎉👌

See you next week 🥋🥋

Last night we started with grade specific kihon working through the whole syllabus. Try to remember at least one piece of individual feedback - thats how we all get better!

The second class started with kumite drills, again working on the footwork with higher grades linking in different combinations and allowing some creativity. Then those who had the full sparring kit were aloud free flowing kumite. Those without did touch kumite drills.

Finally, we finished with kata before a quick stretch out.

Congratulations to Tanmaya and Rinad who were awarded Student of the week and Raymond who picked up August Student of the Month!🎉👌

See you next week 🥋🥋

We warmed up with a Jogging to stance challenge to test the brain 🧠 as well as stances. Then it was going forward in Zenkutsa Datchi with a Jodan Zuki and backwards with a Jodan age Uke.
Class then split with the higher grades working through grade specific combinations before going forward in Sanchin Datchi and backwards in Neko ashi Datchi. Then it was onto open hand strikes from Heiko Datchi building upto a combination. The Lower grades worked through Basic strikes and Blocks from Heiko Datchi.
The Second hour started with Taigyoku Shodan to get warmed up before splitting again. The lower grades worked their grading combinations, refining their Blocks,Kicks and Punches whilst in Stance. They then worked on Taigyoku Shodan and Nidan.
The higher grades started with Taigyoku Nidan with a different Kick each time 😵‍💫 It was back to normal to run through Saifa upto Seiunchin.

Smallest class of the year, so after a warm up we asked those attending what specific aspects they'd like to train in a adjusted the plan accordingly.

In the first hour, the focus was primarily kihon aimed towards the blue/red belt format. Class was finished with kata upto safia.

In the second class we split with lower grades breaking down and drilling Saifa. The higher grades worked on empi, sanseru and kanku sho. After a drinks break both groups rejoined for bassai dai. We finished with kumite drills linking the feet to the hands.

Congratulations to Soul who was student of the week 🎉👍

Firstly we welcomed those who'd attended the world Cup and heard about their experiences and got to see bling! 🥇🥈 Awesome job everyone, we are so proud of your endeavours!

Class started with kihon drills with a difference, incorporating kiba and shiko dachi into the combinations. Then we progressed onto more kihon with a selection from the grading format.

For the second class we started with kata, splitting the grades. Sempai David took the higher grades upto sanseru, meanwhile the lower grades worked on aspects of 1st kata, particularly the turns using all limbs together.

The second half was kumite based with footwork drills finishing with sparring.

Congratulations to Charley-Marie who was student of the week. 🎉👌Although I was very impressed with everyone tonight - awesome effort and etiquette.

Hope to see you next week 🥋

In mid-June, several of our Queensland, New South Wales and Victorian senior group volunteered to complete a Homes set-up with our charity partner, RizeUp Australia.

RizeUp provides all the practical items needed for victim-survivors of family and domestic violence to make a fresh start, including furniture and other household items that help transform empty houses into homes.

When each of our GKR teams arrived at their location, they were greeted by a RizeUp driver, an empty house and a truck filled with flatpacks and homewares. The teams set about unloading the truck, assembling the flatpacks, making beds, filling pantries and carefully decorating the space. This included fitting out children’s bedrooms and providing them with the materials needed to start at a new school.

After 4+ hours of work at each location, the transformation from house to home left a lasting memory for all involved. With the knowledge that a family would be entering their newly furnished home in the coming days, each team member took comfort in knowing that they had helped create a new beginning for someone in need.

We are incredibly grateful to RizeUp for the work they do and for the opportunity to be involved in their Homes program. We also appreciate the amazing support shown by all of our students and instructors who participate in the Stop Domestic & Family Violence Purple Belt Campaign. Your involvement means a lot, not only to RizeUp and the families they help, but also to GKR Karate as a whole.

If you would like to volunteer with RizeUp to help setting up Homes, information can be found here https://www.rizeup.com.au/volunteer

Class 1 started with kihon combinations paying attention to the back foot specifically. These were grade dependant. It finished with 1st and 2nd kata mixing the grades to help the lower grades learn the pattern and seeing the higher grades performance.

Class 2 started again with 1st and 2nd kata but with the higher grades mirroring a lower grade partner. Class was then split with lower grades working through specific aspect of the kata and kata drills. The higher graded performed Bassai dai, Empi and Sepai. Class finished with the focus mitts generating power in punching techniques from the ground up 🥊💥

Awesome job in a hot dojo. Especially Talia and Tanmaya who were students of the week⭐️⭐️. Congratulations to Caitlin who received the student of the month trophy for June! ✨️🎉

As to be expected it was a small turnout this week. It was very warm and humid and so as with a lot of classes this week we focused more on technique and transitions. The good news was less students meant more of a customised approach. White and yellow belts spend the the hour going through strikes and blocks, using noodles for feedback. the higher grades went through kata aimed specifically at those attempting next weekend.

The second class was purely kata with everyone choosing a kata to go through (except Monika who was told her choice 🤣).
For the last 15mins we cracked out the mats and worked on stretching and animal flow techniques for the shoulders and hips.

Look forward to seeing you in a cooler dojo next week 🥋🥋
