Why should women over 40 lift weights?

Not because we need to fight ageing.

Because we deserve to age with strength.

As oestrogen changes through perimenopause and menopause, women become more vulnerable to loss of bone density and muscle mass. Resistance training provides an important stimulus for maintaining both.

But the benefits go much further.

Strength supports metabolic health, balance, mobility and physical function. It helps us stay capable of doing the ordinary—and extraordinary—things we want to keep doing.

And there is something wonderfully empowering about discovering that your body is capable of more than you thought.

This is why STRONG combines functional strength with yoga-inspired mobility, balance, breathwork and meditation.

We’re not training for a smaller body.

We’re training for a stronger life.

This is exactly why I created STRONG.

Your wrists do A LOT. 🤲🏻

Typing. Scrolling. Driving. Cooking. Lifting. Pushing. Pulling. And, of course, supporting us through yoga and other weight-bearing movement.

But they’re often one of the most overlooked areas when it comes to mobility and strength.

The wrist isn’t simply one joint. It’s a complex structure made up of 8 small carpal bones, supported by ligaments, tendons and muscles, with nerves and blood vessels passing through the area. Healthy wrist function depends on all of these structures working together.

These simple movements are designed to gently explore:

✨ Wrist flexion & extension — maintaining range of movement through the joint
✨ Finger mobility — encouraging movement through the small joints of the hand
✨ Forearm & wrist stretching — creating length through muscles and connective tissues that influence wrist movement
✨ Gentle mobilisation — bringing circulation, awareness and movement to an area that can become stiff from repetitive use
✨ Preparation for weight-bearing — particularly useful if you practise yoga, Pilates or strength training

The goal isn’t to force a bigger stretch.

It’s to move well, create space and keep your wrists adaptable.

Try these for a few minutes at the beginning of your yoga or strength practice, after a long day at your desk, or simply as a little daily ritual of care.

And remember: stretching should feel comfortable and exploratory, never sharp or painful. If you have persistent wrist pain or an injury, seek appropriate professional advice rather than stretching through it.

Save this for your next practice and give your wrists the attention they deserve. 🤍

“Yes, I can.”
“I am enough.”

These are the words I hear in STRONG.

Yes, we lift weights. We use resistance bands, blocks and balls. We challenge balance, mobility and coordination.

But what happens in a STRONG class goes far beyond what you can see.

We begin with breath and meditation, move through yoga-inspired mobility, build functional strength and finish with breathwork, like Nadi Shodhana, and meditation.

And there’s good science behind why this matters—particularly for women in midlife.

From our 40s onwards, women naturally begin to lose muscle mass and strength, while declining oestrogen through perimenopause and menopause contributes to changes in bone density.

Progressive resistance training helps maintain and build muscle, support bone health, improve balance and physical function, and support metabolic health and insulin sensitivity.

And the breathwork matters too. Slow, controlled breathing can increase parasympathetic activity—the part of our nervous system associated with rest, recovery and regulation—helping to reduce physiological stress and support relaxation.

But then there are the benefits you can’t quite measure.

You start trusting your body again.

You realise you can do things you weren’t sure you could.

You feel stronger, more capable and more confident.

And perhaps most importantly, you begin to hear that little voice inside saying:

Yes, I can.

I am enough.

There’s a quiet shift that happens in August.

The frantic pace of early summer begins to soften. I’m out of my regular teaching schedule. The evenings stretch a little longer, the garden is full, and before we know it, autumn will be gently knocking at the door.

This year, I’ve intentionally created a lighter teaching schedule. Not because I’m stepping away from yoga, but because I’m leaning more deeply into it.

For me, yoga isn’t confined to the mat. It lives in the simple rituals of everyday life.

It’s baking a cake with seasonal fruit simply because the kitchen smells wonderful. Preparing a nourishing dinner with produce from the garden without rushing. Filling the house with sunflowers. Reading a few pages before bed instead of scrolling. Saying yes to an early night because my body is asking for rest.

These small moments may seem ordinary, but they quietly remind us how to come back to ourselves.

We often think yoga is about doing more.

It’s really about noticing more.

As this summer slows down, I’m choosing to slow down too, savour what’s here, and make space for the season ahead.

How are you choosing to savour these last precious weeks of summer? 🌻

The adventure never ends… 💛

Today we reunited for brunch after our Blue Lotus Yoga adventure to Northern India earlier this year.

What struck me most wasn’t the stories we shared (although there were plenty of those!)… it was how naturally we all slipped back into each other’s company, as though we’d never left the Himalayas.

People often ask me if my trips are yoga retreats.

The answer is… yes… and no.

Yoga is certainly the thread that weaves everything together, but these adventures become so much more than a daily practice.

They become shared sunrises and spontaneous laughter.

Wild swims and woodland walks.

Stories over endless cups of tea and cake.

Supporting one another through moments of vulnerability.

Discovering new places… and discovering new parts of ourselves.

Most unexpectedly of all, they become friendships.

The kind that don’t end when the suitcase is unpacked.

The kind that lead to reunion brunches, shared memories and messages saying, “When are we going back?”

Travel has a wonderful way of reminding us that the places we visit leave their mark on us.

But it’s often the people we meet along the way who stay in our hearts the longest.

To my wonderful India sisters… thank you for another beautiful day of laughter, reminiscing and friendship.(We missed you Barbara Cheshire)

Here’s to India ’26… and wherever our next adventure takes us. 🌿✨

More than a yoga class… it’s a place to come home to yourself. 💙

One of the greatest privileges of teaching is hearing how yoga ripples far beyond the mat.

“Jill has a natural gift for teaching. Her knowledge is amazing and inspirational. She is the BEST storyteller too! I love the chanting – the vibration is so calming. The classes are tailored to suit all levels of ability. Through the classes I have gained a deeper understanding of myself, a confidence I never knew I had, and physical strength and balance. I love the community we have in class and always feel grounded afterwards. Even on days when I don’t feel like attending, I always leave feeling relaxed and empowered.”

Whether you’re completely new to yoga, returning after a break, or looking for a practice that nourishes both body and mind, my classes are designed to meet you exactly where you are.

✨ Gentle Yoga – slow, supportive movement for body and nervous system.
✨ Beginners Yoga – build confidence, learn the foundations and discover that yoga really is for every body.
✨ Dynamic Flow – a stronger, breath-led practice to build strength, mobility and ease.
✨STRONG - Build strength with intention through yoga-inspired movement, resistance training and breath work

At Blue Lotus Yoga, we don’t strive for perfect poses. We practise presence, cultivate resilience and create space to breathe, move and reconnect.

If you’ve been wondering whether now is the right time to begin, perhaps this is your invitation.

September classes are open for booking.
