Merry Christmas GuysâŠ.đ enjoy this comical read (which also happens to be the most accurate post ive read recently! đ)
Ah, horse owning. Truly one of lifeâs greatest and most efficient ways to start an argument.
If your family Christmas gathering is feeling a bit flat, forget politics or who voted for whatâJust put a group of horse owners in the same room and ask one tiny, harmless question. Something like, âSo whatâs the best way to keep a horse?â The room will pick sides faster than asking if die hard is a Christmas film.
Ask how often you should jump a horse and suddenly everyone has a horror story, a success story, and a cousinâs friend whose horse was âcompletely ruinedâ by doing it differently, backed up by a screenshot from Facebook 4 years ago. Bonus points if you ask this while someoneâs holding a mug of teaâtheyâll forget it exists as they gesture wildly.
But if you really want chaosâtrue, unhinged, relationships-will-never-recover chaosâask this: If you absolutely had to choose, would you rather a horse live in 24 hours a day or live out 24 hours a day? Then gently add, âOh, and itâs winter. And itâs been raining for three weeks straight.â Step back. Observe. Maybe put on a helmet.
Suddenly youâre surrounded by passionate speeches about mud fever, respiratory health, mental wellbeing, ruined fields, ruined stables, ruined rugs, and ruined bank accounts. Someone will say âin the wildâŠâ Someone else will interrupt with âbut domesticated horsesâŠâ and before you know it, two best friends of ten years are no longer speaking because one said horses prefer being in and the other gasped like theyâd just confessed to a crime.
Is this why horse owners are known for being âbitchyâ? Is this why horse owners have a reputation for being âbitchyâ? Or is it just because there are roughly 47,000 correct ways to keep a horse, and somehow everyone else has chosen the wrong one? Mix strong opinions with no sleep, no money, constant worry, and an animal with very limited brain cells that reacts to existence like itâs a personal attack and honestlyâitâs amazing weâre as civil as we are.
Horse people arenât dramatic. Weâre just passionate, permanently tired, and one badly worded question away from a full-scale debate that lasts longer than the rain in winter.

Colic and Pyrexia of Unknown Origin Update
Weâve noticed an increase in colic cases over the last week here at Little Rock Equine Vets.
This year really is like no other â and yes, we know we keep saying it!
In the past few days, weâve seen several cases of gassy and spasmodic colic, as well as a few horses presenting with pyrexia of unknown origin (PUO). Typically, these sorts of cases are something weâd expect around late summer or early spring, not the middle of November.
With the strange weather patterns, some fields are still surprisingly green. Please make sure your horses are not going out to graze on an empty stomach â a small feed or some hay before turnout can make a big difference, in reducing the need to call you vet out.
While thereâs little that can be done to prevent PUO, early intervention is key.
If your horse seems a bit dull, goes off their feed, or just isnât quite themselves, please get in touch straight away. Quick treatment in these cases can make all the difference.
If you need any advice please do not hesitate to contact us on 01782 898102, we are as always available and happy to help.
Stay safe, keep an eye on those tummies, and give your four-legged friends an extra pat from all of us
