๐Ÿฅ‹ SELF-DEFENCE STARTS BEFORE THE FIRST PUNCH.

Good self-defence isn't just about knowing how to punch, kick or block.
It starts with awareness, controlling distance, positioning and recognising a situation before it escalates.

These are skills we develop through our adult Karate training, learning how to stay calm, create space and respond when needed.

๐Ÿฅ‹ KARATE STUDENTS โ€” GRADING IS GETTING CLOSER!

Now is the time to start sharpening those small details.

Grading preparation isn't about cramming everything in during the final few weeks. It's about consistently turning up, practising and raising your standard each session.

For Kata, don't just remember the movements. Focus on your stances, balance, timing, power and intent.

As grading gets closer, it should become less about learning your syllabus and more about polishing it. ๐Ÿ‘Š๐Ÿผ

Every class between now and grading is another opportunity to improve. ๐Ÿฅ‹

๐Ÿฅ‹ TUG OF WARโ€ฆ IN KARATE?! ๐Ÿ˜‚

A fun way to finish our Wednesday Mixed Ages Karate class!

It might look like just a game, but thereโ€™s plenty going on behind the scenesโ€ฆ

๐Ÿ’ช Building leg strength
โš–๏ธ Developing balance
๐Ÿฅ‹ Putting strong Karate stances into practice
๐Ÿ”ฅ Learning resilience โ€” donโ€™t give up, reset and try again
๐Ÿค And of course, a bit of friendly competition!

Martial arts doesnโ€™t always have to mean standing in lines practising techniques. Sometimes the best way to develop important skills is to put them into action and have some fun doing it!

Safe to say everyone got a little competitive with this oneโ€ฆ ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿฅ‹

โšก Proudly supported by our club sponsors - thank you for continuing to support Jiyu Martial Arts and our students! ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿผ

Weโ€™ll let Leon off thoughโ€ฆ it was his first session back after 5 weeks off ๐Ÿคฃ

Safe to say the timing might need a little warming up again! ๐Ÿ‘€

Welcome back Leon ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ

๐Ÿฅ‹ FROM LITTLE NINJA TO THE NEXT CHAPTER! ๐Ÿ’™

Reviews like this mean so much to us!
One of the things we love most is watching students begin their journey in our Little Ninjas programme, grow in confidence and ability, and then take that exciting next step into our main martial arts classes. ๐Ÿฅ‹

But martial arts is about so much more than learning how to punch, kick or earn the next belt.

It's about developing confidence, discipline, resilience and friendships, while learning skills and values that we hope stay with our students far beyond the mats.

A huge thank you for such lovely feedback and for trusting us to be part of your son's journey.

We can't wait to see how far he goes as he continues his Karate training, especially now in our new full-time Jiyu Martial Arts gym in Cheadle! ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿฅ‹

๐ŸฅŠ โ€œBUT I DONโ€™T KNOW WHAT Iโ€™M DOINGโ€ฆโ€

One of the biggest worries we hear from people thinking about starting martial arts is:

โ€œIโ€™ve never done anything like this before.โ€
โ€œI wonโ€™t know what Iโ€™m doing.โ€
โ€œIโ€™ll probably look silly.โ€

But here's something worth rememberingโ€ฆ

Everyone starts somewhere.

This is Louis in his very first Kickboxing lesson back in February 2023, learning a simple combination on the pads.

Then you can see the progression.

Little by little, the technique improves. The balance gets better. The combinations become more natural. Speed and power start developing.

Fast forward around 3 years of consistent training and look at him now๐Ÿ”ฅ๐ŸฅŠ

More advanced combinations.
โšก Speed
๐Ÿ’ฅ Power
๐ŸฅŠ Technique
โš–๏ธ Balance
๐Ÿง  Reactions and confidence

None of that was there on Day 1.

And it wasn't supposed to be.

That's what training is for.

Nobody walks into their first lesson already knowing how to punch, kick, move or put combinations together. You learn one thing, then another. You make mistakes. You practise. You improve.

And eventually, you look back and realise just how far you've come.

Louis didn't need to be good enough to start.

He started and that's how he got good. ๐Ÿ‘Š๐Ÿผ

So if you've been thinking about trying martial arts but you're worried you'll be the only beginner in the room who doesn't know what they're doingโ€ฆ

That's exactly what a beginner class is for.

๐Ÿฅ‹๐ŸฅŠ Karate & Kickboxing at our new full-time Jiyu Martial Arts gym in Cheadle.

Complete beginners are always welcome.

Everyone has a Day 1

๐ŸฅŠ๐Ÿฅ‹ FROM STUDENTS TO FUTURE COACHESโ€ฆ

A massive well done to Henry and Bobby, two of our higher-level Brown Belt Kickboxing students, who recently completed their school work experience with us at Jiyu Martial Arts! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ

Their timing couldn't have been much better eitherโ€ฆ they joined us during the very first week of running classes from our brand-new full-time gym in Cheadle! ๐Ÿ”‘๐Ÿ

So they got to experience much more than just the coaching side of martial arts.

Throughout the week they helped with:
๐ŸฅŠ Coaching students across our classes
๐ŸŽฏ Taking 1-to-1 clients through circuits and training drills
๐ŸฅŠ Pad holding and breaking down techniques individually
๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿผ Welcoming students and new starters into the gym
๐Ÿฅ‹ Showing people how our new facility operates, including entering and leaving the mats correctly
๐Ÿงน Helping with cleaning, tidying and the everyday jobs that keep a gym running properly

They even stepped outside their comfort zones and helped in our Karate classes, despite Kickboxing being their main discipline!

One of the biggest lessons from work experience is seeing everything that happens behind the scenes.

Running a martial arts club isn't just turning up and teaching a class. It's coaching, communication, organisation, maintaining the facility, welcoming new people and creating an environment where everyone feels comfortable from the moment they walk through the door.

It was also great seeing them experience martial arts from the other side. Instead of receiving instruction, they had to explain techniques, spot mistakes, encourage others and adapt to the person they were coaching.

Who enjoyed having Henry and Bobby helping out in their classes? ๐Ÿ™‹โ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ™‹โ€โ™€๏ธ

You'll hopefully be seeing plenty more of these two! Both are keen to take the next step and begin our Instructor Training Programme, developing from high-level students into the next generation of Jiyu Martial Arts coaches. ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ๐Ÿฅ‹

A brilliant week to have them involved, especially during such an important first week in our new home.

Well done, lads! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ”ฅ
