Core training after 50 should be about more than just “feeling your abs burn”.

The suitcase march is one of our favourite core exercises because it trains your body to stay strong, tall and controlled while you move.

That matters in real life.

✔️ Carrying shopping.
✔️ Walking with bags.
✔️ Staying steady on your feet.
✔️ Keeping your posture strong.
✔️ Not letting your body get pulled out of position.

You can use a kettlebell, or if you haven’t got one, load up a bag with some tins or anything you have at home.

Simple, useful, and much more relevant to everyday life than endless crunches.

Save this one and give it a try.

Being strong is not much use if you cannot control it.

Strength matters, but it is only one part of the puzzle.

If you want your body to feel useful in the real world, you also need balance, coordination and control.

Because everyday life does not happen in perfect gym conditions.

• You might trip.
• You might need to catch yourself.
• You might be carrying something awkward.
• You might have to move quickly without thinking.

That is why we include exercises like this at Strongevity.

Not just to help people get stronger, but to help them use that strength when it actually matters.

We had a question come through with a few different parts, but the main point is this:

Strength training is not one size fits all.

How quickly you progress, when to increase weight, and whether an exercise is right for you depends on your body, your history, your injuries and your starting point.

That is why proper coaching matters.

But one thing we can clear up quickly…

You cannot target fat loss from one specific area.

Crunches will not directly remove stomach fat or “love handles”.

Fat loss happens across the whole body, so instead of chasing exercises for one area, focus on what actually works:

Strength training, more movement, better nutrition and consistency over time.

Why do we use barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells and resistance bands instead of mostly machines?

Because free weights tend to give you more useful strength for real life.

There’s nothing wrong with machines, but they’re very specific. They often don’t challenge your balance, coordination and core stabilising muscles in the same way.

Someone might be able to leg press a lot of weight, but still struggle to squat confidently.

And most people over 50 aren’t training because they care about gym numbers.

They’re training to get off the floor, carry the shopping, play with their grandchildren and stay capable as they get older.

So if you only have limited time to train, choose the exercises that carry over best to real life.

I have a genuine question for you…

If you are over 50 and you know you should be strength training, what has held you back from starting?

• Was it fear of getting injured?
• Not knowing what to do?
• Feeling like normal gyms are not for you?
• Worrying you’ve left it too late?
• Trying to work around pain, injuries or health conditions?

We really want to understand this better.

Because the more we know about what stops people getting started, the better we can create content, support and guidance that actually helps.

So if you feel comfortable sharing, let us know in the comments.

What has been the biggest thing holding you back?

Going on holiday does not mean your training has to completely disappear.

If you’re away for a few days or a week, enjoy it. Relax, switch off, and don’t overthink it too much.

But if you’re away for longer, doing a little bit of something can make a big difference when you come back.

Nothing crazy. Just a couple of short 10 to 15 minute band workouts to keep your body moving and keep the routine ticking over.

You’re probably not going to make loads of progress while you’re away, and that’s fine.

The goal is simply to not come back feeling like you’ve lost all momentum.

And honestly, you’ll probably feel better for doing a bit of something anyway.

We had a good question about what type of exercise is best for cardiac health.

Without knowing someone’s full situation, it would not be right to give a specific answer.

But generally, anything that safely gets your heart rate elevated for a period of time can contribute.

Walking, swimming, jogging, housework with a bit of pace, or training in the gym.

Your heart does not care what the activity is called.

It cares how hard it is working, how long it is working for, and whether it is appropriate for you.

And if you have any concerns around your heart health, always speak to a medical professional first.

Meet Lewis 👋

To finish off our Meet the Team series, it only feels right to end with the person who started Strongevity.

Lewis is the founder of Strongevity, and the reason this gym exists in the first place.

After years of coaching, running gyms, learning, making mistakes, improving, and seeing how many people over 50 were being completely underserved by normal gym environments, Strongevity was built to do things differently.

Not just to help people lift weights.

But to help people feel stronger, more confident, better supported, and more capable for the long run.

So here’s your chance to get to know Lewis a little better.

Gary asked a great question about what long term progression looks like at Strongevity.

Do we just keep adding weight and reps forever?

Not exactly.

We focus on main movement patterns like pushing, pulling, squatting and hinging.

There are lots of exercises that sit under each of those, but we do not change them every week just for the sake of variety.

We keep exercises in long enough to build confidence, improve technique and make progress.

Then, when we’re ready for a new challenge, we change the variation and build again.

That is how long term strength training works.

Not random.

Not rushed.

Just progressed properly.

A lot of people have asked what resistance bands they should buy if they want to train from home.

The honest answer is, don’t overthink it.

We use Wolverson bands at Strongevity because they get a lot of heavy use in a commercial gym, but for home workouts you can start with something simple from Amazon, Aldi, or wherever has decent reviews.

Look for looped resistance bands without handles, clips or loads of attachments.

To start, you probably only need two.

• One light band.
• One slightly heavier band.

You also don’t need a fancy gym set up at home.

A door handle, table leg, or something solid to anchor it around will usually do the job.

The main thing is not having perfect equipment.

It is finding a simple way to start, and then actually using it.
