Myth Buster: Why Dropping a Nap Doesn’t Guarantee Better Night Sleep

It’s a common belief that if your baby misses a daytime nap, they’ll magically sleep better at night. And sometimes they do, but it’s usually only short-term due to exhaustion which is not a good solution. Here’s why...

💤 Overtiredness: Skipping a nap will likely lead to overtiredness, making it harder for your baby to fall asleep and stay asleep at night. Overtired babies often wake more frequently during the night.

💤 Consistent Sleep Patterns: Babies thrive on consistency. If their daytime routine drastically changes, it can disrupt their overall sleep patterns, including nighttime sleep.

💤 Daytime Naps Are Vital: Daytime naps play a crucial role in your baby’s development, helping them process new information, regulate emotions, and recharge for the rest of the day.

💤 Quality vs. Quantity: It’s not just about the number of naps but also the quality of sleep your baby gets. Maintaining age-appropriate daytime naps can improve the overall quality of their sleep.

Instead of eliminating naps altogether, focus on:

Ensuring a consistent daytime nap routine.
Age-appropriate wake windows between naps.
Creating a conducive sleep environment.
Watching for sleep cues and adapting the nap schedule as needed.

Remember, every baby is unique, and their sleep needs vary. If you need some extra help or would like some guidance, send me a DM and let’s have a chat.

Myth Buster! Waking a Sleeping Baby: When It’s Necessary and Why

There’s a common belief that you should never wake a sleeping baby, but let’s debunk that myth! Sometimes, waking your baby is not only okay but even necessary. Here are some of the key reasons...

👶 Feeding Schedule: Newborns need to eat frequently, usually every 2-3 hours. If your baby sleeps longer, it might be necessary to wake them for a feeding to ensure they’re getting the nutrition they need to thrive.

👶 Health Check: If your baby is ill, premature, or has specific medical conditions, your doctor might recommend waking them for regular health checks and feedings.

👶 Day-Night Reversal: Some babies might get their days and nights mixed up, sleeping a lot during the day and staying awake at night. Waking them during the day can help reset their internal body clock.

👶 Scheduled Activities: If you have appointments, errands, or other commitments, you might need to wake your baby to stick to a schedule.

👶 Sleep Safety: In certain situations, such as when a baby falls asleep in an unsafe position (e.g., in a car seat), it’s crucial to wake them and move them to a safe sleep environment.

👶 Daytime Routine: You may have to wake your baby to ensure you can fit in another nap before bedtime to ensure your baby doesn’t go to bed overtired.

So, whilst we cherish those peaceful naps and find it difficult to wake our sleeping baby, sometimes it’s for the right reasons. 💕👶

To offer a dummy or not during sleep? That’s a common question many parents ponder. Let’s dive into the world of dummies and their role in helping your little one sleep soundly:

1.Dummies for Comfort: Dummies can provide comfort and a soothing sensation for babies, helping them self-soothe and settle into sleep.

2. Reducing SIDS Risk? Some studies suggest that using a dummy during sleep may reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). However, it’s essential to only offer the dummy after breastfeeding is established if you’re nursing.

3. Sleep Associations: Be mindful of the sleep associations formed with dummies. If your baby relies on a dummy to fall asleep, they might wake up when it falls out during the night.

4. Weaning Gradually: If you decide to use a dummy for sleep, consider weaning your baby from it gradually as they grow. This can help avoid potential sleep disruptions later.

5. Safe Use: Always use a dummy designed for babies, keep it clean, and never tie it to your baby’s cot or clothing. Safety first!

6. Personal Choice: Ultimately, the choice to use a dummy for sleep is a personal one. It’s essential to do what feels right for your family and your baby’s sleep needs.

Remember, every baby is unique, and what works for one might not work for another. Whether you choose to use a dummy for sleep or not, the goal is a safe and peaceful night’s rest for both you and your little one.

Here’s how to help it go smoother for your little one:

* Bring back naps and bedtimes 15 to 30 minutes earlier for a few days leading up to the clock change

* Do not change what you are doing with your little ones routine, keep consistent to let them know sleep is coming

*Get your baby outdoors or let sunlight in, this will help regulate their natural body clock.

Sleep nurturing for your baby or toddler goes a long way in setting the foundations for healthy sleep habits.
So why use gentle sleep training to nurture healthy sleep?

Gentle sleep training offers numerous benefits for both toddlers and babies such as promoting healthier sleep habits without causing distress.
By implementing gentle techniques, parents can establish consistent bedtime routines, giving a sense of security and comfort for their little ones. This approach encourages self-soothing skills, empowering infants to fall asleep independently and sleep through the night. Additionally, gentle sleep training methods prioritise emotional connection, ensuring that babies feel supported and reassured during the bedtime process. As a result, families experience improved sleep quality, reduced stress levels, and enhanced bonding moments with their children. Embracing gentle sleep training not only cultivates a peaceful sleep environment but also allows for long-term sleep patterns conducive to overall well-being and restful sleep.

Sleep training is not cry it out, yes there’s a version of that but here at dreamland sleep, it’s gently helping your little one fall asleep. Book a free call now (link in bio or DM) & let’s start this journey together

Does your baby struggle to have naps or even takes short naps? Here are things to consider

Ensure they have had sufficient feeds throughout the day, hunger could be causing your baby to wake up multiple times a night.

A consistent routine will go a long way in helping your baby or toddler realise it’s bedtime and allow them to relax before they fall asleep. A warm bath, bedtime story, gentle shushing will help relax your little one.

Environment should be sleep conductive, check the room temp, keep the room dark, and you could use white noise to drown out background noises.

Self soothing is key for your baby to fall back asleep once they wake up whether that be at night or after a short nap. To gently help your baby to self soothe and nurture healthy sleep habits, book a free call with me (link in bio or dm me)
