26th September 2026 – Southampton 2s v Blandford & Sturminster Men’s Hockey (2-3)

Following last week’s narrow loss, Blandford were keen to bounce back against a vibrant Southampton side. On what was a suspiciously hot day for September, Blandford showed the potency of their new front-foot style.

After a mere 2 minutes, Nathan Hertz broke down the left-hand side and slipped the ball through the Gareth Hardiman. Gaz held the ball, before turning the keeper and reversing the ball in to give Blandford an early lead which they carried into the second quarter.

However, the lack of substitutes on such a hot day was making it difficult for Blandford to commit to their customary high-press and a momentary lapse allowed Southampton to equalise on the 20th minute.

Southampton’s combination of youth and substitutes was proving hard to match and Southampton took the lead on the 27th minute through Tom Saunders.

Blandford showed grit and determination and worked their way back into the game. A ball through to Gaz Hardiman was struck viciously, pinging off the keeper’s helmet. Gaz collected the rebound and coolly lifted it through a sea of bodies to Theo Browning who ‘helped’ it into the back of the net.

Blandford remained resolute in defence and some lively tackling from both sides detracted from the flow of the game. Efforts from the Southampton strikeforce were matched by a wild reverse strike from Theo and a shot from Gaz that flashed past the right post.

Then, with five minutes to go, Tom Tridgell broke into the D, before slipping the ball past the keeper into the path of Paul Cross. Paul set his feet before pushing the ball into the empty net to give Blandford a well-deserved victory.

MoM: Nathan Hertz – full of running in very challenging conditions.

DoD: Paul Cross – His match-winner paled into insignificance against his inability to locate Wally.

Blandford & Sturminster Men v Trojans 4s (0-1)

After what felt like an eternity, Blandford & Sturminster were finally back in league action. A league higher and with fresh faces in the squad, there was a sense of nervous anticipation over what the next 70 minutes would bring.

Blandford started with an intensity that surprised Trojans, putting their Solent opponents on the back foot with their high press, with only the early season rust preventing them from punishing their opponents. Aaron Brookshaw’s decisive passing from the back, paired with Tom Tridgell and Matty Lewis’ midfield control, countering the precision of the Trojans routines.

In the early exchanges Finn Hardiman excelled, adding a dynamism to his skills that had the Trojans defence reeling. However,
Blandford were unable to convert, with Theo Browning coming closest at the back post.

Blandford went into half-time tied and full of optimism for the second half.

They started brightly again, with two early strikes from the right from new signing James Garrett both well saved. He then picked the ball on the left swinging goalwards from the reverse, but to no avail. Last season’s top scorer Gareth Hardiman continued to look dangerous and only the presence of Area Masters’ keeper and captain Philip Roch kept Blandford at bay.

However, Blandford’s attacking focus was to be their undoing. A stray forward pass was picked of by the Trojans’ attack putting their striker through on goal. Despite Aaron Brookshaw’s best attempt to flatten him, he got past, rounding keeper Clint Thrower, before finishing at an acute angle to take the lead on the 55th minute.

Blandford seemed to deflate and Trojans were well on top for the next ten minutes. However, captain Matty Lewis managed to rally his troops and Blandford spent the last 5 minutes bombarding the Trojans’ defence. But somehow Trojans stood firm and saw out a narrow 1-0 victory.

Congratulations to James Garrett and Nathan Hertz who both made their competitive debuts for the club.

Man of the Match: Aaron Brookshaw – His calmness in the D and decisive passing added another dimension to Blandford’s play.

DoD: James Garrett – A fine debut was marred by his choice of pre-match footwear.
