Michael Wynn-Jones, a founder member of Battisford and District Cricket Club, sadly passed away peacefully at home yesterday.
Michael was involved with the club from the very beginning, as player, captain and club captain. Together with Delia, he also helped secure the club’s future by purchasing the current ground from Greene King.
In the early 1980s, Michael started the club’s cricket tours to Kent and Sussex, earning the affectionate nickname “U-turn Michael” after repeatedly missing the turning to the first ground! Through his BBC connections, he also arranged memorable matches against the Swap Shop team, including Noel Edmonds and Keith Chegwin.
Michael continued to support the club over many years and, with Delia, opened the new pavilion in 2004, later renamed the John and Molly Burt Pavilion.
More recently, Michael came along to the Ultimate Cricket Tea in September 2024, supporting Delia in judging the fantastic homemade fayre. He was particularly pleased to see a Norwich City shirt hanging next to an Ipswich Town one!
Michael and Delia last visited the club on a Friday evening in late July, when he was very complimentary about the overall set-up and the progress made over the years.
Michael’s contribution to Battisford and District Cricket Club, both on and off the field, has been immense. He was a true part of the fabric of the club and will be very much missed by everyone at BDCC.
Our thoughts are with Delia, his family and all those who knew and loved Michael at this very sad time.
Anyone wishing to send a message of condolence, which will be included in a BDCC card for Delia and the family, is invited to email [email protected] by 6th October.
Rest in peace, Michael. Thank you for everything you gave to Battisford and District Cricket Club. 🏏
