Dealing with large canopies on felled or fallen trees carries with it a high level of risk which can cause injuries or in worst cases fatalities to operators within the Forestry and Arboriculture industry. Main aspect to take into account is the canopy and stem rolling causing crush injuries. When dealing with larger trees planning is the most important part to remember. Stage removal of the canopy is the safest method to deal with the tree. If machinery is available to aid with the process of crown breakdown the task will be made easier but uncontrolled movement can still occur. I don’t personally have an arb digger and grab so I adopt the use of a winch to secure the stem and also in this case I use the winch to roll the stem in stages to bring the branches and stems down to a safer working level. Always take time plan the operation and continually re-assess the condition and position of the tree as you work through the process. STIHL Portable Winch

Just back from a great few days in the forestry of north wales training windblown trees. I finally got the chance to see my friend’s fantastic little forwarder in action. The alstor is designed to carry the weight but leave very little to no trace on the ground which is ideal for sensitive forestry and woodland sites.

Project iconic raffle is now live. The year long project to create 4 pieces of iconic hardware from the Arb industry all in rope. De-tensioning and re-tensioning of pull cord on a Stihl 261. The method shown will work on most pull cord cases for nearly any machine. The first short use of the new APW 6000 portable winch after training today. Really looking forward to the potential this machine has going on how this preformed. The APW 6000 winch runs on the AP batteries from STIHL . Watch this space for more videos and info.
