Odyssey Martial Arts Odyssey is a fun family friendly Martial Arts exclusive to Strathaven and the surrounding areas run by Stephanie Mackenzie.

Good luck to everyone competing at the DMA Championships tomorrow! 🥋💜

We are taking a massive team of almost 40 competitors, and so many of you are stepping onto the mats for the very first time. We are so excited to see how you all get on. You have worked so hard in class, so go out there, enjoy every second and make yourselves proud. Whatever happens tomorrow, we are already proud of every single one of you.

For everyone not competing, classes are on as normal tomorrow for Energy, Ninjas and Warriors.

There is no Spartans class tomorrow, but any Spartans who fancy training are very welcome to come along to Warriors at 11am for a joint class. 🙌

5 years ago this week, we taught our very first Odyssey classes in the Town Mill. 💜

I still can't quite believe it. We went from a couple of classes a week to a full timetable in our very own custom built dojang. I'd love to take the credit, but realistically it's down to every single one of our Odyssey families.

Thank you for trusting us with your kids. We treat them as our own, and we love riding the highs and lows with every one of you. Along the way we've launched our own kids programme, we've had gradings, competitions, parties, movie nights and so much more. And the growth in every single student has been unbelievable.

To Mr Stirling and Miss Stirling, who have stood by me from day one, covering classes and keeping me sane. And to our bigger team, Miss Raeburn, Miss Beth and Miss Muir, we couldn't do any of this without you all. 🙌

PS. This is one of my favourite videos from week 1 of classes. Look closely and you might spot some familiar faces along with a very young Beth and Ryan working on their very first kicks. Just days ago we took them both to the ITF World Cup in Benidorm, where they absolutely smashed it. Hard to think of a more fitting week for it. 🥹💜

I am delighted to share our awesome September stars. These students have had amazing attendance and worked super hard in classes recently.

We're back! 🥋💜

After an amazing (and very busy) week away, all classes are back as normal from tonight. Thank you so much for understanding while we were off, it means the world to us.

Feel free to come along to some extra training this week too. It's a great way to get back into the swing of things, and we'd love to see you.

A couple of reminders. There is no Spartans class on Saturday 10th as we are taking a big team to compete at the DMA Championships. All other classes are on as normal that day.

And all classes will be running as usual during the October school break, so no excuses. 😂

What a week at the ITF Taekwon-Do World Cup. 🥋

Odyssey had a small but mighty team of 3 competitors, Miss Cowan, Miss Beth and Mr Ryan, competing across 7 events. Their preparation couldn't have been any better. They made every one of the extra training sessions over the last few months, and as it was Beth and Ryan's first international event, we coaches knew they had to be ready to the highest standard. The results reflect the phenomenal improvement they have made.

🥉 Miss Cowan, World Cup Bronze Medalist
Female 18-35 years, 2nd Degree Patterns
Miss Cowan smashed through her pool, defeating Spain, Poland, Netherlands and Slovakia before going on to the semi final. Against Norway the match went to not one but two draws, and she narrowly missed out on a place in the final. She was spectacular throughout, so strong and composed. We are so incredibly proud of the athlete and person she is. 3rd out of 87 competitors! 😮‍💨🫶🏻

🥉 Ryan Scanlan, World Cup Bronze Medalist
12-14 years, -60kg Male Blue and Red Belt Sparring
Ryan was clean and clinical in every match, defeating Spain, Netherlands and Ukraine to earn his place in the semi final. There he sparred the eventual winner from Ukraine and was amazing again, coming so close to the final. We are so, so proud of Ryan. 😮‍💨🫶🏻

Beth McDougall, Quarter Finalist
12-14 years, -56kg Female Blue and Red Belt Sparring
Beth was tested right from the start but showed her skill and determination, defeating a Neutral Athlete and Canada before facing USA in the quarter finals. It was a close one and heartbreaking to come so near, but she was a superstar and showed exactly why she inspires so many of our young ones at Odyssey.

Both Ryan and Beth also came close to medals in Special Technique and had some excellent pattern performances, showing they are all round Taekwon-Do students with a very bright future ahead.

A special mention to our coaches, Miss Stirling and Mr Stirling, for all the extra training they have given over the last few months to help prepare our team.

Thank you to our families for all their support. Giving up time in the sunshine to cheer each other on is exactly what we are all about at Odyssey. 💜

And thanks to our incredible Odyssey Family back home too. Everyone's kind messages and watching online meant so, so much. Thank you for understanding while classes were closed and for all your efforts fundraising this summer. 💜

This was a trip to remember. Ryan and Beth both started Taekwon-Do in the very first launch classes at Odyssey, almost exactly 5 years ago, and now they're competing on the biggest world stage. What an achievement, and proof of what hard work and dedication can do. 💜

Both Beth and Ryan gave amazing performances in pattern yesterday but unfortunately did not medal. Ryan was fantastic in special technique in the afternoon coming a massive 6th in the world in a huge category of over 50 competitors. Well done Ryan 🇪🇸💜

Huge week ahead for the Odyssey Family. 💜

Miss Eilidh Cowan, Miss Beth McDougall and Mr Ryan Scanlan along with Miss Stirling, Mr Stirling and myself as coaches are heading to Benidorm to the ITF Taekwon-Do World Cup, and this one is genuinely next level. Over 2,600 competitors from 57 countries, all in the one place, over 5 days of competition.

The whole club is behind you all. The hours you've put in, the sessions, the sacrifices, all of it led to this. We couldn't be prouder to be sending you off to represent Odyssey on a world stage.

Go and enjoy every second of it. You've earned your place there.

Quick reminder, classes are off from now until Monday 5th as our instructors will all be out in Benidorm coaching and supporting the team. Keep an eye on our socials over the next couple of days, we'll be sharing all the updates and news from the trip as it happens.
