The Cambridge are delighted to announce the signing of Cal Brannen ahead of the new season! ⚽️

Cal joins us with plenty of footballing ability and is another exciting addition to an already strong squad. 💪🔥

🔥 JORDAN’S 0–6 THE CAMBRIDGE 🔥

💙 WHAT A RESPONSE FROM THE LADS! 💙

After last week’s poor start, the lads had a point to prove today as we travelled away to Jordan’s at Washington Hub, facing a side who have strengthened their squad with a number of new players from last season.

There were a few changes to the starting line-up, with Jack Gaz, Robbo and Jesse coming into the side.

From the first whistle, the lads were absolutely on it. The ball was being sprayed around the pitch, playing one and two touch football, moving it left to right and making the opposition chase.

A solid back three of Jack, Dom and Luke gave us a great platform to build from.

⚽ 1–0 CAMBRIDGE!
Robbo broke through the Jordan’s defence and calmly finished to give us the lead.

⚽ 2–0 CAMBRIDGE!
It wasn’t long before Robbo was at it again, grabbing his second of the game and putting us firmly in control.

Jordan’s responded by starting to move the ball around themselves, making the lads work hard for every challenge and every ball, but the Cambridge stood strong.

HALF TIME: JORDAN’S 0–2 THE CAMBRIDGE

The second half saw the lads come flying out of the blocks! 🚀

⚽ 3–0!
Robbo completed his hat-trick after his effort went in off the post and goalkeeper. 🎩🔥

⚽ 4–0!
Jamie delivered the ball into the box and Carsey was there to put it away and make it four!

⚽ 5–0!
New signing Reece announced himself with a perfectly timed header straight into the top corner. 💥

Unfortunately, Reece’s game came to an early end after attempting an overhead kick and landing on his neck! 😳😂

Some are saying it was because he was wearing the great SAFC socks and wanted an excuse to get them off! 🤣

⚽ 6–0!
The final goal came from Jake, who absolutely smashed one from outside the box, burying it into the back of the net! 🚀

A massive improvement from last week and exactly the response we wanted. The lads showed great energy, movement, passing and finishing, with everyone putting a shift in from start to finish.

A clean sheet, six goals and a much more convincing performance. 💙👏

Match Report

Fatfield Club FC 5–4 Cambridge FC

The Cambridge opened the new season away to a very well-organised Fatfield Club FC side, knowing from the outset that this was going to be a tough test.

With almost the full squad available, the lads went into the game having only played two friendlies during what had been a difficult pre-season. Despite that, there was a real belief within the group that we could start the season positively.

The game started well from a Cambridge perspective, with some good passing and movement early on. However, some sloppy play and mistakes at the back allowed Fatfield to take advantage, and two quick attacks resulted in two goals.

The lads managed to pull one back and, at that point, there was a feeling that we could turn the game around. Unfortunately, the first half didn’t go the way we wanted. Fatfield continued to punish our mistakes and added a third, fourth and then fifth goal before half-time.

At the break, we were 5–1 down and, quite simply, we hadn’t been good enough in the first half. The management team made some quick changes, but more importantly, lifted the lads and reminded them that the game wasn’t over.

Whatever was said in that dressing room certainly worked.

The second half was a completely different Cambridge team.

We started winning tackles, competing for every ball and, most importantly, playing football as a team. The passing became sharper, with one-touch football, clever movement and balls being played through the Fatfield defence.

The pressure eventually paid off.

We pulled the score back to 5–2 after our striker was brought down inside the box, with the resulting penalty being calmly converted.

Suddenly, the belief was back.

The third goal followed after some fantastic football opened up the Fatfield defence, giving us the opportunity to make it 5–3.

The lads continued to push and created chance after chance. Balls were hitting the crossbar, the post and flying narrowly wide as we threw everything at Fatfield.

Then, just before the final whistle, we found the net again to make it 5–4.

At that point, the game was anyone’s. The lads had chances to complete what would have been an unbelievable comeback, but ultimately football is about putting those chances away — and unfortunately, we couldn’t find that final goal.

There are obviously plenty of things for us to work on, particularly after the first-half performance, but there are also plenty of positives to take.

To go into half-time 5–1 down and come out in the second half to produce the performance we did shows the character, determination and fight within this group.

Credit must go to Fatfield. They are a fantastic, well-organised team who took their chances when they came and ultimately earned the three points.

For Cambridge, it’s a disappointing result, but there is a lot to build on.

We’ve only had two friendlies, we’ve had a difficult pre-season and we’re still getting the squad settled. The second-half performance showed exactly what these lads are capable of when they play together, compete and believe.
