Another appointment at Nottingham City Hospital on Wednesday... and another 3 hours! But it's really reassuring how much time and care they give to their patients 💕
The armpit side of my new breast isn't looking too good at all. It's very sore, the skin has started breaking down and, if I'm honest, it looks quite unpleasant.
The team spent quite a while discussing my case. They also took a swab from the wounds to check whether there's any infection or specific bacteria that might need treating. For now, they're continuing to monitor it closely while waiting for those results.
The plan is to use Flaminal Hydro, a dressing gel that helps support wound healing by keeping the wound moist and helping to manage bacteria, along with a different type of dressing. They're also trying different dressings because my skin is reacting to some of the adhesives, making everything even more uncomfortable.
At the moment, they think it may be skin necrosis, which can sometimes happen after a DIEP flap reconstruction if part of the skin doesn't get enough blood supply while it's healing. The hope is that it's only the top layer that's been affected and that the healthy tissue underneath will continue to heal, but only time will tell.
I'll need it redressed at home every other day and I'll be back at the hospital every week so they can keep a close eye on it and decide on the next steps.
I'm doing okay in myself and have been managing short walks every day. I won't lie, I am worried about losing my breast for a second time. I coped well for the two years without it, but knowing it was only temporary is what really helped me get through.
For now though, positive thoughts only while I let my body do its best to heal ♡
Today a very dear friend took me out for breakfast, and it was just what I needed ❤️
